There is no evidence yet that a “PSP 3” will deliver more frames per watt than a Steam Deck 2. The cited sources establish neither official specifications for a PSP 3 handheld nor a matched efficiency test for either future device. The claim is therefore speculation, not a confirmed performance result.
What is known about the PSP 3 and Steam Deck 2?
The available sources do not establish official specifications for a PSP 3 handheld. Sony’s August 20, 2026 sustainability update discusses PS5 power-saving measures; it is not a PSP 3 announcement and does not settle whether Sony has made a separate announcement. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s update cannot be used to infer a handheld’s hardware or efficiency.
Steam Deck 2 is also prospective in the cited reporting. Tom’s Guide described it as not officially announced in its article. The article reports comments from Valve SteamOS designer Pierre-Loup Griffais about Valve’s goals for a successor, but those comments do not disclose a final configuration or measured result. Tom’s Guide’s Steam Deck 2 coverage is reporting, not an official specification sheet.
What Valve’s current Steam Deck specifications can—and cannot—tell us
Valve’s current models provide useful context for its existing handheld power envelope, but neither model is a proxy for the performance of unreleased devices. Valve lists both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models with an APU power range of 4–15 W. Their battery capacities and estimated gameplay ranges differ:

These are manufacturer specifications and estimates, not standardized FPS-per-watt measurements. Valve says gameplay time depends on content; battery-life ranges cannot be converted into a fair performance-per-watt ranking without matching the game, settings and power measurement. What Valve has said about a future Deck
Tom’s Guide quotes Griffais, speaking at CES 2025, as saying Valve wants “bigger performance and power efficiency improvements within that 8-15 watt power envelope.” The outlet also reports his view that a 20–30% improvement would not be meaningful enough to developers and users. These are reported design aims—not a promise of a particular performance gain, an announced Steam Deck 2 specification, or an efficiency result. The same report quotes him saying, “There is no Steam Deck 2 with Ryzen Z2”; that comment does not establish which silicon a future model will use.

How to compare FPS per watt fairly
FPS per watt is frame rate divided by power draw, but the result is meaningful only when the workload and power boundary are clear. APU-only power is not the same as whole-device power, which can include the display and other components. A higher frame rate in one test does not by itself prove better efficiency if the devices were measured under different conditions.
A useful head-to-head test would need to match or disclose:

- The same game build, scene and test duration.
- Resolution, graphics settings, upscaling and frame generation.
- Frame cap and refresh-rate settings.
- Whether watts refer to the APU or the entire handheld.
- Average and sustained frame rates, alongside measured watts.
- Firmware, drivers and thermal conditions during testing.
Without those details, a one-number comparison can obscure trade-offs. The sources cited here provide no matched test for a PSP 3 and Steam Deck 2, so they cannot identify an efficiency winner.
