Choose a Wi-Fi 7 router by checking your devices, wired network, and home layout—not by picking the biggest advertised speed number. Confirm whether your important clients support 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO), whether the router’s WAN and LAN ports fit your broadband and wired gear, and whether one router can cover the rooms you use.

What does tri-band mean?

A tri-band router has radios for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. That gives a network more band options, but it does not mean every device can connect to all three. Older devices will generally use compatible 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands; a client needs its own 6 GHz support to use that band. Check the exact phone, laptop, or other client model, and confirm that 6 GHz is available under the rules for your country and the router’s regional model.

Tri-band and dual-band describe the number of bands, not whether a router supports MLO. Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be; the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) identifies channel widths up to 320 MHz as a Wi-Fi 7 capability. That is a standard capability ceiling, not a promise that a home device will receive a particular speed. WBA also described Wi-Fi 7 as “over three times faster than Wi-Fi 6” based on wider channels and 4K-QAM. Treat that as a capability comparison, not a measured or guaranteed household result. WBA’s Wi-Fi 7 overview

What does MLO mean in Wi-Fi?

Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is a Wi-Fi 7 capability that lets a compatible access point and client coordinate multiple links. Depending on the implementation, links may be combined for potential throughput gains or a device may switch to a more suitable link to avoid interference or delay. MLO can offer throughput, latency, or reliability benefits, but the label alone does not establish which bands or links a particular client uses, whether multiple radios transmit simultaneously, or what improvement you will see.

Both the router and client need Wi-Fi 7 MLO support, and the result depends on hardware, firmware, and the specific modes they share. Look for details about supported MLO modes and credible testing rather than assuming every product marked “MLO” behaves the same. The WBA’s 2026 announcement about residential field trials quotes its president and CEO, Tiago Rodrigues, describing MLO as a step toward more consistent multi-gigabit broadband support. That statement concerns those trials; it is not a performance guarantee for all home routers. WBA’s announcement and resources

Why MLO labels need context

In 2026, RTINGS reported testing 25 Wi-Fi 7 routers and found material differences in MLO implementation; its article said 22 in its tested sample used what it called the “most minimal form” of MLO. This is a reviewer’s finding from a specific sample and methodology, not an industry-wide census. Product firmware and the market can change, so use independent results relevant to the models you are comparing. RTINGS’ Wi-Fi 7 testing discussion

What is 2.5GbE?

2.5GbE is a wired Ethernet link rated at 2.5 gigabits per second. It can remove the 1 Gbps port ceiling when your broadband service or a wired device can exceed gigabit speeds, but only if every relevant part of the connection supports the faster rate. Check the router’s port speeds and roles: a port marked WAN/LAN may be assignable to either purpose, while a LAN-only port serves wired devices.

For example, TP-Link’s US product page for the Archer BE9700 lists one 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port, one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, and three 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not measured throughput. The faster ports help only when the connected broadband service or equipment can use them. How should I compare Wi-Fi 7 routers?

Compare routers in the order that determines whether their features will matter in your home:

  1. Check client support. For the devices you rely on, verify the exact model’s Wi-Fi 7, MLO, and 6 GHz support. A Wi-Fi 7 router does not add those client capabilities to older devices.
  2. Compare the radio configuration. Check whether each option is dual-band or tri-band, which bands it supports, and whether those features are available on the regional model you would buy.
  3. Inspect MLO details. Confirm compatible clients, supported modes, and relevant firmware information. Treat independent tests as more useful than the bare MLO label when you want to compare behavior.
  4. Map the wired path. Compare your broadband WAN speed with the router’s WAN port, then check the speed and number of LAN ports against wired devices such as a desktop, storage device, or network switch. Make sure a faster port has the right WAN or LAN role.
  5. Plan for coverage. Consider where the router can sit and whether it reaches the rooms where you need a connection. If it does not, a mesh layout may be worth considering; placement, floor plan, and obstacles mean there is no universal single-router coverage winner.
  6. Check regional model and availability. Confirm the exact model sold in your country and local 6 GHz rules. Prices and stock vary, so check current local listings rather than relying on a general buying guide.

How to read an advertised Wi-Fi speed

A router’s advertised aggregate wireless rate is not the speed a single phone or laptop will necessarily receive, nor does it predict whole-home coverage. The Archer BE9700 illustrates the distinction: TP-Link US labels it a 9.7 Gbps tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router, but that figure is a vendor-advertised aggregate rate, not an independent measurement of internet speed or real-world performance. Compare client capabilities, band and MLO support, port arrangement, coverage needs, and independent tests instead of treating the largest number as a guaranteed result.
