YouTube usually blocks a custom thumbnail for one of five reasons: your channel has not unlocked intermediate features, the file exceeds the limit for the device you are using, you are using the wrong workflow for a Short, a daily upload limit has been reached, or YouTube has restricted the image or channel. Start with the exact message in YouTube Studio, then follow the matching fix below.
Start with the message YouTube shows
Do not treat every failed upload as a file problem. YouTube’s own errors point to different fixes:
- Custom thumbnail is missing or unavailable: check Feature eligibility and phone verification.
- “This phone number cannot be used for verification”: try another delivery method or an eligible number, subject to YouTube’s verification limits.
- File rejected: check format, size, dimensions and aspect ratio.
- “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”: stop uploading and wait 24 hours.
- Thumbnail saved but not visible: allow time for propagation and check where you are viewing it.
- Warning, strike or policy notice: review the image and your channel notices before trying again.
Once you identify the symptom, use the corresponding section rather than repeatedly submitting the same file.
1. Enable custom thumbnails in Feature eligibility
Custom thumbnails are an intermediate YouTube feature. Phone verification is the normal way to unlock it.

- Open YouTube Studio.
- Go to Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility.
- Look for the intermediate-features section and complete phone verification if it is not enabled.
- Return to the video editor and check whether the custom-thumbnail control is now available.
For a channel that is not a Brand Account, only the channel owner can complete phone verification. For a Brand Account, an owner or manager can phone-verify the channel. If you are an editor or another invited role, ask an owner or manager to perform this step.
If verification fails
YouTube can send a code by text message or voice call. Some carriers do not support Google verification messages, so switch between those two delivery methods. YouTube also says a phone number can be linked to no more than two channels in a year. If that number has reached the limit, use an eligible number rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
2. Check the file type and device-specific size limit
YouTube recommends exporting a thumbnail as JPG or PNG. The maximum file size depends on what you are uploading and where:

A file that succeeds on desktop can therefore fail on a phone, even when the image itself has not changed. If your export is larger than the applicable limit, open the original project and export a compressed JPG, or resize and save a PNG that remains below the limit. Do not simply rename a file extension; convert it to a real JPG or PNG.

Quick file checklist
- Confirm the filename ends in
.jpg,.jpegor.pngand that the file opens normally. - Check the actual file size in your operating system, not just the dimensions shown by an editor.
- Remove unnecessary layers, metadata and transparent canvas area if they are inflating the export.
- Export again after editing; a partially uploaded or corrupted file should be discarded.
3. Use practical dimensions and the correct aspect ratio
YouTube’s recommendations are targets, not universal rejection rules. For regular videos it recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, a minimum width of 640 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio. For Shorts it recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, a minimum height of 640 pixels and a 9:16 ratio.

These recommendations help prevent unexpected cropping and poor quality, but an image is not automatically rejected solely because it is below the recommended resolution. If an upload fails, fix format and size first, then re-export at the recommended ratio and a sensible resolution.
Regular video upload paths
On a computer, open Content, select the video, choose Thumbnail > Upload file, and select Save. The YouTube Studio app on iOS and Android also provides a custom-thumbnail route for regular videos.
Shorts are different
YouTube currently adds custom thumbnails for Shorts in Studio on a computer. If the option is absent in the mobile app, that is a workflow limitation rather than evidence that your account is permanently blocked. Open Studio in a desktop browser, select the Short under Content, upload the image there, and save.

Podcasts use their own size rule on mobile
Podcast thumbnails uploaded from mobile have a 10 MB limit, while desktop podcast uploads have a 50 MB limit. Use the limit for the device you are actually using.
4. Wait out a daily custom-thumbnail limit
If Studio says “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”, YouTube’s instruction is to try again in 24 hours. The cited help guidance does not publish one universal numeric limit. Limits can vary by country or region and by channel history, so repeatedly changing the image will not remove the restriction.
- Stop submitting thumbnail files for the affected channel.
- Record when the message first appeared.
- Wait a full 24 hours before trying one valid upload.
- If the message returns, inspect Feature eligibility and channel notices instead of creating repeated attempts.
5. Separate a successful save from a display delay
A thumbnail can be saved successfully while older artwork remains visible temporarily. Allow time for the change to appear, then check the video in more than one location.
Vertical videos have an additional presentation caveat. On Home, Explore and Subscriptions, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom image with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This behavior does not necessarily mean the upload failed.

6. Check policy restrictions and channel standing
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube specifically identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as reasons an image may be rejected or lead to a strike.
What to do after a policy notice
- Read the notice in YouTube Studio and identify whether it concerns the image, the video or the channel.
- Remove or redesign elements that violate the stated policy; do not keep resubmitting the same artwork.
- Check the channel’s notices and email. YouTube says a strike notice appears by email and in Channel Settings.
- Resolve the standing issue before assuming a new file will restore thumbnail access.
Strikes can affect feature eligibility or upload limits. A clean-looking image can still be blocked if the channel itself has an active restriction.
7. A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this order when the error is unclear:
- Copy the exact error text. “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” requires a wait; a missing control requires eligibility checks.
- Check Feature eligibility. Verify that intermediate features are enabled and that the person performing verification has the correct channel role.
- Confirm the content type. Decide whether it is a regular video, Short or podcast.
- Confirm the upload device. Apply the 2 MB, 10 MB or 50 MB limit that matches the content and device.
- Re-export the image. Use a genuine JPG or PNG and the recommended ratio.
- Use the supported workflow. For Shorts, switch to Studio on a computer.
- Review notices and policy. Look for strikes, rejected-content messages or channel restrictions.
- Wait when the service tells you to wait. This applies both to the 24-hour daily-limit message and to a saved image that has not propagated yet.
