Most often, OBS has an old or incorrect YouTube stream key saved. In YouTube Studio, open the intended stream in Live Control Room, copy its current key, and replace the one in OBS. Check the server or stream URL at the same time: YouTube’s key and URL are separate settings. YouTube recommends getting a new key and updating the encoder when an error appears as it starts.
What “invalid stream key” means
A stream key is a credential OBS uses to send your video feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The stream URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream connection. They are not interchangeable, and a correct key in the wrong field will not configure the connection correctly. YouTube’s stream settings guide explains the key, while its encoder setup guide explains the separate server and key fields.
The message alone does not identify one definitive cause. Start by replacing the saved key with the one for the stream you intend to broadcast, then verify the connection method and server setting.
Replace OBS’s saved key with the current YouTube key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live or Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy its current stream key.
- In OBS, open the streaming connection settings. Replace the saved stream key with the value you just copied, then save or apply the change.
- If OBS is configured with a custom server, check that its server field contains the stream URL supplied by YouTube and that the copied key is in the separate stream-key field. If YouTube is available as an encoder service in OBS, select it as the service instead.
- Start the encoder again and check whether YouTube receives the stream.
YouTube notes that previous stream settings may load again, including an old key. Do not assume a value saved in OBS is still the current key. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.

If replacing the key does not work
Reset a key that may have been replaced or compromised
In Live Control Room, reset the key for the intended stream, then copy the newly generated value into OBS and try again. Resetting changes the credential, so OBS must be updated to match. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube gives a compromised key as an example reason to reset it. Manage live stream settings.
Check whether OBS uses a key or an account-login connection
These are different connection modes. If OBS is configured with a manually entered key, verify the selected stream, key, and—when using a custom server—the stream URL. If you sign into YouTube through streaming software and do not enter a key yourself, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team; the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. Changing a manual key may not address an account-login integration problem. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance distinguishes this support path.

Update OBS, then check channel and stream selection
If the connection details are correct and the error persists, update OBS to the latest version available to you and retry. YouTube recommends current encoder software as a general troubleshooting step; its guidance does not establish that a particular OBS version causes this exact error.
Also confirm that your channel can livestream and that you selected the intended stream and its key. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If you are sending both vertical and horizontal formats, YouTube says to match each format to its corresponding key. These are useful checks, but neither is documented as the explanation for every invalid-key message. Get started with live streaming.

What this error does—and does not—tell you
- It points first to the connection credentials: retrieve the key for the intended stream and update the encoder, YouTube’s documented first remedy for an encoder startup error.
- It does not prove OBS is defective or that your network is at fault. YouTube’s network and encoder checks address broader stream-health issues; the cited guidance does not identify network trouble as the cause of every invalid-key message.
- It is not a guarantee that resetting the key will fix the problem. YouTube’s help pages do not provide an OBS-version-by-version error table or a complete cause list for this exact message.
