If YouTube Live shows a lower resolution than OBS, first find out where the lower number appears. YouTube’s Live Control Room can report the resolution it detected at stream ingest; a viewer’s quality menu can show a lower playback rendition created from your incoming feed. Those are different things. A lower playback option by itself does not prove OBS sent a lower-resolution source.
First determine whether the issue is ingest or playback
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. OBS explains that transcoding produces feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates; YouTube transcodes streams, including the source feed. So compare the two relevant results rather than treating every low-resolution display as an OBS problem:
- Ingest: the resolution and frame rate YouTube detected from the stream it received, shown in Live Control Room.
- Playback: the quality rendition available or currently selected for a viewer in the player.
YouTube describes this behavior in its encoder settings and resolutions guidance; OBS explains transcoding in its transcoding article, published June 9, 2021.
Diagnose the source YouTube received
- Check OBS’s encoder output resolution. Compare the resolution actually set for output or encoding with the resolution you intend to stream. The canvas or source dimensions alone do not confirm what the encoder sends. OBS menu labels can vary by version, so check the output/encoder settings in your installed version rather than relying on a version-independent menu path.
- Check YouTube’s ingest details and stream health. In Live Control Room, compare the detected resolution and frame rate with the OBS encoder output. Watch for stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it.
- Check the stream key’s resolution setting. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. If you use a custom stream key, its manual-resolution setting can override automatic detection. Review the key and stream settings using YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Check that bitrate suits the codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations vary with all three. For H.264, its published guidance gives 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive or select that playback quality.
- Test with representative content. Before an important stream, use the same kind of motion and audio you expect during the event. Check the YouTube ingest report and health messages while testing, not just the viewer’s playback menu.
YouTube’s relevant encoder settings
YouTube’s published guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video encoding. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. For H.264, the listed bitrate figures include:

| Ingest resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 ingest at the stated resolution and frame rate. Do not apply them indiscriminately to other codecs or combinations; consult YouTube’s current encoder table for your chosen settings. Even a correctly configured source does not guarantee a matching playback rendition for every viewer.
Why OBS and the viewer can show different resolutions
OBS’s encoder output is what it sends; YouTube’s ingest report is what it detects; the viewer’s quality menu reflects playback renditions YouTube makes available. Network conditions, device capability, and the rendition selected in the player can make the visible playback quality lower than the source. To separate these cases, compare OBS output with YouTube’s ingest details first, then check the player’s quality menu on another capable device or network.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Live Control Room reports a lower ingest resolution than expected
- Confirm OBS’s encoder output resolution; do not infer it from the canvas or source size.
- Check whether the stream key uses manual resolution instead of YouTube’s default automatic detection.
- Review the bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate being sent, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Run a representative test stream before the event and compare the encoder output with YouTube’s detected ingest values.
Ingest looks right, but the player offers or selects a lower quality
- Open the player’s quality menu and check which rendition is selected.
- Test playback on another capable device and network.
- Compare the result with the ingest report. A lower playback rendition does not, on its own, show that OBS sent a lower-resolution stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
