First check where the picture disappears: the video player on your computer, your streaming software’s preview, or YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If the streaming software is already showing black, fix the scene or video source. If its preview is correct but YouTube is black, check the stream destination and key. If YouTube replaces the picture with a placeholder, look for a copyright warning in YouTube Studio.
This guide assumes “uploaded video file” means a local file being played through streaming software such as OBS. A file uploaded to YouTube is a different workflow; the checks below apply when an encoder is sending a live feed.
Trace the picture through the stream
A live stream has several stages: the local file plays, the encoder places it in the scene being broadcast, and the encoder sends that scene to YouTube using the stream URL and key. Compare the previews in that order before changing settings. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitoring stream quality during the event (YouTube encoder setup).
- Local playback: Does the video play on the computer?
- Encoder preview: Does the intended scene show the video in OBS or your streaming software?
- YouTube preview: Does the matching event in Live Control Room show the picture?
The first point that shows black narrows down where to investigate. This is a diagnostic method based on the encoder-to-YouTube path, not a claim that every black screen has the same cause.

If the streaming software preview is black
Select the right scene and source
In OBS, select the scene intended for the live output. In the Sources dock, confirm that a Media Source is present and points to the intended file. Make sure its eye icon is enabled. OBS scenes combine sources, and sources higher in the list appear above lower ones; an opaque source above the video can therefore cover it (OBS Media Sources; OBS Sources Guide).
Confirm the file can be read
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported video types for Media Source. That list does not guarantee that a specific file is intact or that its codecs will decode on your computer. Check that the source path is valid and that the file plays locally. If it does not, try a known-good file before changing YouTube settings.

If you are using an OBS VLC Video source for a playlist, VLC must be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This requirement applies to that source type, not to every Media Source.
If OBS is correct but YouTube is black
Check the destination and stream key
When the encoder preview shows the intended picture, verify that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube event and that its server or stream URL and stream key are configured correctly. YouTube explains that the stream key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it (YouTube encoder setup).

Make sure you are viewing the Live Control Room preview for the same scheduled or current event configured in the encoder. Check whether YouTube has received a picture before starting the broadcast, then monitor its stream-health messages and video quality while live (YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube stream health).
Do not assume the file format is the cause
If the video appears in OBS but not in YouTube, the local file is making it into the scene. Check the selected event, stream destination, key, and YouTube preview before replacing or re-encoding the file. A black playback window by itself does not establish that the file format is unsupported.

If YouTube shows a placeholder or interrupts the stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. When it identifies such content, YouTube may replace the live stream with a placeholder image; if the content continues, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning rather than trying to bypass detection (YouTube live-streaming restrictions).
If you have permission to use the material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. A license does not necessarily prevent a match from appearing unless the relevant rights-management steps are handled.
