YouTube’s 12-hour stream limit is the key to understanding why a 24/7 kirtan stream may not produce one dependable, continuous archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” Its guidance does not promise how a longer broadcast will be divided into parts, so a split archive cannot be diagnosed from duration alone.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance means for a 24/7 stream
YouTube Help’s Archive live streams guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The same 12-hour threshold appears in YouTube’s guidance about DVR. The help pages do not state that every stream over 12 hours will be split, nor do they specify a particular pattern for archive parts.
That means a 24/7 kirtan stream is well beyond the documented duration threshold for dependable archiving as one session. The guidance is a limitation, not a guarantee: being under 12 hours does not ensure an archive will always be created, and the threshold alone does not explain a particular part boundary.

End and restart in sessions under 12 hours
If individual YouTube archives matter, plan deliberate broadcast sessions shorter than 12 hours instead of relying on one continuous 24/7 session. This is a practical application of YouTube’s duration guidance, not a promise that every shorter session will archive successfully. Schedule a restart at a natural break in the kirtan stream, and confirm that the prior session has ended before starting the next one.

Keep a local recording backup
YouTube Help recommends: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” If you stream through an encoder, its live encoder tips advise checking that the local archive file is growing. Make sure the recording destination has enough free space for your chosen resolution, bitrate, codec, and retention period; YouTube does not specify a universal device or storage capacity for this purpose.
Do not treat DVR as the archive control
DVR lets live viewers pause and rewind, but YouTube says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That is a live-viewing behavior, separate from whether a recording appears after the event. Disabling DVR does not stop viewers from watching the full recording once an archive is available. Check what happened to an existing stream
- Inspect the archives in Studio. In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live. Review each archive’s details and visibility; YouTube says archive visibility can be changed and an archive can be deleted from this area.
- Compare each part’s runtime. Note start and end times, then compare them with the planned session length. The 12-hour guidance provides context, but does not identify the cause of an individual boundary.
- Review encoder and operator history. Check for a stopped encoder, an operator restart, or another interruption around the boundary. YouTube’s general archive documentation does not say that a particular encoder causes streams to be archived in parts.
- Check the local recording. If you recorded locally, confirm the file is present and playable. For an encoder workflow, check during the broadcast that the file is continuing to grow.
- Check DVR separately if the complaint is about rewinding live. Review the DVR setting and the stream’s duration; limited rewind on a long stream is not the same issue as a missing or divided archive.
