Two AI charges do not automatically mean you were billed twice for the same thing. OpenAI bills ChatGPT subscriptions and API usage separately, and a ChatGPT subscription bought on more than one platform can create separate charges. Check the service, purchase channel, account and covered usage period before disputing a transaction.
Why two AI charges may both be valid
OpenAI states that “ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems. Manage each product’s charges and billing history in its own settings.” A ChatGPT plan pays for the subscription service; API charges relate to API usage. Other distinctions matter too: a subscription may be billed through the web, Apple App Store or Google Play; different accounts or organizations may be involved; and a recurring subscription, prepaid API credits and usage-based charges are different billing bases. Similar amounts or close payment dates alone do not establish that a charge was repeated.
How to trace an unexplained charge
- Start with the statement. Note the merchant name, amount, date and any invoice or transaction reference. Treat the merchant description as a clue, not proof of which product or account generated the charge.
- Check ChatGPT subscription billing. In ChatGPT, open Settings and review the plan or billing area for the account you use. If you may have subscribed in an app, also check subscriptions in the Apple App Store and Google Play accounts used on your devices. - Check API billing separately. Open the API platform’s billing overview and confirm the organization you are viewing. ChatGPT subscription settings do not show API billing history, and API billing does not show your ChatGPT subscription charges. If you belong to more than one organization, check the organization associated with the activity or payment.
- Match API charges to usage. In the API Usage Dashboard, select the correct organization and reporting period, then review project filters and available exports. Dashboard reporting uses UTC, so activity near midnight may fall on a different calendar date than your local time. API calls made in the Playground also count as API usage. - Compare billing periods, not just payment dates. A payment may post on a different date from the period of service or usage it covers. Check invoices, subscription dates and API usage windows before treating two entries as overlapping charges.

Understand the different billing schedules
OpenAI says a self-serve monthly ChatGPT subscription renews on the date it began. API billing can involve prepaid credits or automatic card payments; enterprise API customers may be invoiced. Enterprise ChatGPT billing follows the relevant agreement. Check the covered period against the payment date, especially if one charge is a subscription renewal and another reflects API usage or a separate purchase. [OpenAI Help Center]
Alerts, limits and API credits are not interchangeable
An API spend alert tells you that usage has reached a notification threshold; it does not stop requests. A configured hard spend limit can stop affected requests, but enforcement is not instantaneous and recorded spend may slightly exceed the limit. A prepaid credit balance is different again: it is funding for API usage, not a ChatGPT subscription. When a charge still does not make sense
Contact OpenAI or the app store/payment platform responsible for the transaction. Include the date, amount, invoice or transaction reference, relevant account or organization, and API usage window if applicable. Never send an API key, password or full payment credentials. If the payment is through a marketplace, its subscription records may be needed to investigate that particular charge.
These checks describe OpenAI’s billing setup. Other AI providers, app developers and resellers may handle subscriptions, usage and marketplaces differently, so use the billing records for the provider named on your statement.
