If your device says the Wi-Fi password is incorrect, first confirm you’re joining the right network and using its current Wi-Fi password. Then forget the saved network and reconnect. If the device joins but reports “No Internet,” that’s a different problem: it has connected to Wi-Fi, but internet access is failing later in the connection process.
First, identify what is going wrong
Wi-Fi problems can happen at different stages. A password rejection means the device has not joined the wireless network. A network that does not appear in the list may point to visibility, range, or compatibility. “Connected, no internet” means the device joined Wi-Fi, but cannot reach the internet; Microsoft’s technical guidance treats that as a separate stage involving issues such as IP addressing, DNS, proxy settings, or a firewall (Microsoft Learn’s wireless connectivity troubleshooting guide).
Check the network name and current Wi-Fi password
Make sure you selected the intended network name, or SSID. Nearby networks can have similar names, and entering the correct password for a different network will not work. Ask the network owner whether the Wi-Fi password has changed recently. If you manage the router, check its official app, label, or documentation for the current wireless password.
- Enter the password exactly, including uppercase and lowercase letters and punctuation.
- Use the Wi-Fi password, not the router administrator password or a WPS PIN; these are different credentials.
- If the network belongs to work or school, ask its administrator for the correct connection details rather than changing settings yourself.
TP-Link lists a password mismatch as one possible authentication problem and advises contacting router support if you cannot confirm the wireless password (TP-Link’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guide).

Forget the saved network and reconnect
A device may still have an old password saved after the network credentials changed. Removing the saved profile and joining again makes the device ask for the current password.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
- Select the affected network and choose Forget.
- Open the Wi-Fi network list, select the same network name, and enter the current password.
These are Microsoft’s documented Windows steps in its Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guide. Other devices have similar options for removing a saved network, but menu names and locations vary; consult the current support instructions for your device.

Use another device to narrow down the cause
Try connecting a second phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi network. This is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis, but it helps show whether to focus on one device or the network.
- If the other device connects: Focus on the original device’s saved network profile, software or Wi-Fi adapter, and supported wireless bands.
- If several devices cannot join: Check with the network owner and investigate the router’s current settings. If you cannot verify the password or the network still rejects devices, contact the router manufacturer or internet provider.
Microsoft and Apple both recommend comparing devices as part of troubleshooting (Apple’s iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide).

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Restart the modem and router
Restarting networking equipment can help with a connection problem, but it temporarily disconnects everyone using it. Follow the router or internet provider’s instructions, particularly for equipment managed by an employer, school, landlord, or provider.
- Unplug the modem and router from power. If they are a single combined unit, treat them as one device.
- Wait about 30 seconds, then restore power to the modem. Allow it to settle before continuing.
- Restore power to the router, if it is a separate device, and wait for it to finish starting up.
- Try connecting again.
Microsoft gives this general sequence in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions; equipment-specific directions take priority.

Try another Wi-Fi band if one is available
Some routers offer separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If both appear, try the other band. A device may not support every frequency; for example, Microsoft notes that a 2.4-GHz-only adapter cannot use a 5-GHz network. Trying another band checks compatibility—it does not change or fix the password. See Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guide and Apple’s Wi-Fi guidance for these checks.

If one device cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, seek help from that device’s manufacturer. Apple, for example, advises contacting Apple when an iPhone or iPad cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network (Apple Support). If multiple devices fail on the same network, or nobody can confirm its current Wi-Fi password, contact the network owner, router manufacturer, or internet provider.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Do not factory-reset the router as an early troubleshooting step: a reset can erase its configuration, and it is not a routine first-line fix established for a general password rejection. Likewise, do not weaken or change the router’s security mode just to address an incorrect-password message. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it, while noting that available security options depend on device compatibility (Microsoft’s wireless network setup guidance). Check router documentation and compatibility before making security changes.
When a wired test can help
If a computer and router have suitable Ethernet ports, or compatible adapters, connect them with an Ethernet cable to test whether internet service works over a wired connection. Microsoft notes that this can help determine whether the problem is due to the Wi-Fi router (Microsoft Support). A wired test does not fix a rejected Wi-Fi password; it helps distinguish Wi-Fi trouble from a broader internet connection problem.
