Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYour USB Wi-Fi adapter can be slower than your router because the router’s advertised speed describes its capabilities—not the speed a single computer will receive. The adapter, Wi-Fi band, USB connection, signal, interference, drivers, and router settings all shape the result. Check those factors in order before replacing the adapter.
Why router speed and adapter speed differ
A router’s maximum advertised rate is not a promise of internet speed for every connected device. The computer can use only the Wi-Fi standards, bands, and features supported by its adapter, and the actual connection is affected by channel width, signal quality, interference, and the USB path. Internet service limits and other network conditions can also keep a speed test below the router’s advertised wireless rate.
An adapter’s reported association or link rate is a useful diagnostic clue, but it is not the same as the internet speed a test will show. TP-Link gives a rule of thumb of about 50% of association speed on 5 GHz and about 30–50% on 2.4 GHz in its troubleshooting guide; those are vendor estimates, not independent benchmark results or a guaranteed conversion for your setup. Diagnose the slow connection before buying anything
1. Record a fair baseline
Run several speed tests from the computer in its usual location and note the results. Keep the computer, network, test service, and approximate time consistent when comparing results. Then repeat in another location. This helps distinguish a persistent adapter or network limit from a local weak-signal problem. Microsoft recommends taking a speed-test baseline before changing a Wi-Fi network. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi layout guidance

- 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
2. Confirm the adapter’s capabilities and connected band
Look up the exact adapter model and confirm its supported Wi-Fi standards and frequency bands. A router may offer 5 GHz or 6 GHz even if an older adapter supports only 2.4 GHz. If your router broadcasts separate network names for its bands, connect to each supported network in turn and compare performance from the same place.
The bands involve a coverage trade-off: 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and passes obstacles better, but has fewer non-overlapping channels and is more prone to congestion. 5 GHz generally offers more throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter range and weaker wall penetration. 6 GHz requires a compatible Wi-Fi 6E router, client device, and drivers, and it has shorter range. 3. Check the USB connection
Verify which USB port the adapter uses and whether a hub or cable sits between it and the computer. Microsoft lists USB 2.0 high-speed at a maximum transmission rate of 480 Mbps and USB 3.0 at up to 5 Gbps. These are USB interface ceilings, not predicted Wi-Fi speeds. A USB 3.0 device can fall back to USB 2.0 high speed through a USB 2.0 hub or cable, so check the adapter’s requirements and connect it directly to an appropriate port when possible. Microsoft’s USB FAQ
4. Test adapter placement and signal
A USB adapter tucked behind a metal desktop case, blocked by furniture, or placed near other obstructions may receive a weaker signal than a laptop or phone positioned elsewhere. Try a clearer location and, if the adapter has adjustable antennas, test orientations supported by its manufacturer. Change one thing at a time and repeat the same speed test so you can tell whether the change helped. Microsoft and Intel both recommend checking physical placement and obstacles. 5. Compare bands and channel conditions
If the adapter supports 5 GHz and the signal is strong enough, compare it with 2.4 GHz from the same location. In a distant room or through several walls, 2.4 GHz may be more reliable despite lower potential throughput. Congested channels can also reduce performance; a wider channel is not automatically better if the connection becomes less stable. Check the router’s channel settings and follow its manufacturer’s guidance rather than changing multiple wireless settings at once. TP-Link’s adapter troubleshooting guide
6. Check drivers, power settings, and software
Install the current driver for the exact adapter model and operating system from its manufacturer. If you use Windows, Microsoft lists the wireless adapter’s power setting for Maximum Performance as a troubleshooting option. Security or network-management software and router firmware are other checks identified by TP-Link. Adjust one setting at a time and retest; do not leave security protection disabled just to see whether a speed test changes. When replacing the adapter makes sense
Consider a replacement only when the checks point to a client-side limitation—for example, the current adapter does not support a band or Wi-Fi standard your router uses, its USB interface is unsuitable for the device, or its position cannot provide a usable signal. Match any replacement to your router, available USB ports, operating system, and the adapter’s placement needs. An external or repositionable antenna may help when placement is the constraint, but no advertised maximum rate guarantees better real-world performance.
Compare adapters by supported Wi-Fi generation and bands, operating-system and router compatibility, USB interface, antenna design and placement flexibility, and current driver support. There is no universally best model established by these sources, and USB versus PCIe form factor alone does not determine the result: products and setups differ.
