If your travel eSIM is installed but has no internet, first make sure it is switched on and selected as the phone’s mobile-data line. Then check the plan’s roaming and APN instructions, refresh the network connection, and confirm the plan covers your destination and still has data. The right settings vary by provider, phone, and plan, so avoid changing settings that your provider has not recommended.
1. Check that your phone is using the travel eSIM for data
A phone can have more than one SIM line active, but its default line for mobile data may still be your home SIM. Check that the travel eSIM profile is present, switched on, and selected for mobile or cellular data. Voice and data line choices can be separate.
On iPhone
Open Settings and tap Cellular, Mobile Service, or Mobile Data—the label varies by iOS version and region. Select the travel eSIM as the line for cellular data. Apple’s instructions for using an eSIM while travelling are at Use eSIM while travelling internationally with your iPhone.
On Google Pixel
Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, then select the travel eSIM as the data SIM. Google notes that a Pixel can have only one default SIM for data; menu options can vary by device and Android version. See Set up and use eSIM on Pixel.

2. Check the travel line’s roaming and APN settings
Some travel eSIM plans require data roaming to be on for the travel line to connect to a partner network. Check the provider’s setup instructions for your specific plan and destination, and enable roaming only on the line the provider identifies. Do not assume that roaming should be enabled on your home SIM: your carrier’s terms determine whether that could trigger charges.
An APN (access point name) tells the phone how to connect to mobile data. Some providers configure it automatically; others specify a value or setup steps. Use the APN supplied for your plan rather than copying a value from another eSIM. Google documents Pixel roaming and APN controls in Connect to mobile networks on a Pixel phone. Orange Travel also advises its customers to check roaming and APN settings in its no-internet troubleshooting guide.

3. Refresh the network connection
The phone may have a valid plan and correct settings but still need to register with a local network again. Apple’s roaming guidance recommends: “Turn on Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds. Then turn it off again and let your iPhone automatically select the best network.” If that does not help, restart the phone and allow it time to reconnect.
If automatic network selection continues to fail, check your provider’s supported-network list for your current country before selecting an operator manually. Partner networks depend on the plan and destination, so choosing an unsupported network may not restore service. Apple’s instructions are in About cellular data roaming options for your iPhone and iPad.

4. Confirm the plan is active, covers your location, and has data left
In the provider’s app or account, check that the plan is active now, includes the country or region where you are, and has remaining data. Also look for plan-specific speed restrictions or activation rules. A signal indicator alone does not confirm that a plan includes usable data in your location.
For an international plan, exceeding its data allowance can mean running out of data or getting slower service. Apple explains this in its cellular data roaming guidance. Your provider can confirm account-specific usage, validity, and partner coverage.

5. Verify phone and carrier compatibility
eSIM availability depends on the exact phone model, carrier eligibility, lock status, provider, and destination network. A phone that supports eSIM in one configuration is not automatically eligible for every travel plan. Check your provider’s requirements for the exact model and confirm whether your carrier has locked the phone before considering a replacement device.
Apple lists requirements for setting up an iPhone eSIM in its international travel eSIM instructions. Google notes that eSIM setup depends on carrier support and recommends contacting the carrier if setup problems persist in its Pixel eSIM guide.

6. Contact the provider if there is still no data
If the line, plan instructions, connection refresh, coverage, and compatibility all check out, contact the travel eSIM provider. Include details that let support check both the account and the phone’s network setup:
- Your current country or destination and the location where service fails.
- Your phone’s exact model and operating-system version.
- The eSIM plan or order details, plus its status and remaining data as shown in the provider app.
- What the phone shows—for example, whether the eSIM is switched on, whether it shows a network, and any error message.
- Which steps you have already tried, including the data-line selection, roaming or APN changes, Airplane Mode, and restart.
Apple and Google both direct users to their carrier or provider when eSIM setup problems continue. Apple’s guidance is at Use eSIM while travelling internationally with your iPhone; Google’s is at Set up and use eSIM on Pixel.
If you need to choose a different travel eSIM plan
Compare the details that determine whether a plan can work for your trip, not just its advertised data amount. Check its destination coverage, supported local partner networks, data allowance and speed policy, validity and activation rules, device eligibility, and available support. These terms vary by destination and plan; verify them on the provider’s current plan information. The available evidence does not establish a general ranking of providers, prices, or connection reliability.
