The clock can only show the right local time if the phone has the correct time zone and rules. Confirm location access if your device uses it to identify the zone, install available updates, and restart if prompted. If automatic adjustment still fails, select the correct time zone manually—not an arbitrary one-hour offset.
Why your phone may not have changed time
An hour-long discrepancy can be consistent with an incorrect time zone, automatic time-zone detection being disabled or unavailable, location-based detection failing, or the device needing updated time-zone information. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your handset. Whether the date is also wrong, whether you recently traveled, and whether the problem affects the system clock as well as individual apps can help narrow it down.
Automatic date and time and automatic time zone are separate controls on Android. On iPhone, automatic adjustment also depends on internet connectivity, software, and a system location service. Exact labels and availability vary by device, operating-system version, carrier, and region.
Fix the time on an iPhone
- Connect your iPhone to the internet and install any available iOS updates.
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Setting Time Zone. This allows the iPhone to use its location to identify the time zone.
- If an alert says updated time-zone information is available, restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch.
- If the time remains wrong, return to Settings > General > Date & Time, turn off Set Automatically, and choose the correct city or time zone. Apple also documents setting the date and time manually. Verify the zone against your actual location.
Apple notes that Set Automatically may not be available with every carrier or in every country or region. A Screen Time passcode or corporate profile may also restrict the setting. See Apple’s time and time-zone troubleshooting steps.

Fix the time on an Android phone
- Open the device’s Clock app, tap More > Settings, then choose Change date and time.
- Turn on Automatic date and time so the phone can set its clock automatically.
- In the same date-and-time settings, turn on Automatic time zone. Depending on the device, time-zone detection may use location.
- If automatic selection is unavailable or inaccurate, use the manual time-zone selection in the date-and-time settings and choose the zone for your actual location.
- If the time-zone rules may be out of date, check for a system update. Google says Google Play services for system management can support time-zone updates; some system-management functions work only on Android 9 and later. This does not mean every fix is delivered independently of an operating-system or device update.
Android menu names, paths, and available automatic controls vary by manufacturer and device. Some devices support only location-based time-zone setting. Refer to Google’s Android time, date, and time-zone instructions and its explanation of Google Play services for system management.
Choose a time zone, not a one-hour offset
Do not try to fix the clock by simply adding or subtracting an hour. A time zone is a named regional setting whose local rules determine the offset and whether daylight saving applies; the correct choice depends on where you are and the rules in effect there. A phone’s 12- or 24-hour display format changes how time is shown, not the underlying time or time zone.

If the setting is unavailable or the problem continues
- Automatic control is missing or grayed out: On iPhone, check whether a Screen Time passcode or a corporate profile restricts the setting, and whether your carrier or region supports it. On Android, controls differ by device; some models offer only location-based time-zone setting.
- Automatic time is on, but the zone is wrong: Check the automatic time-zone control separately and make sure location access is available if the phone uses location to detect the zone.
- The phone offers an update or time-zone alert: Install available system updates. If an iPhone reports updated time-zone information, restart it and any paired Apple Watch.
- The clock still disagrees with an app: Check whether the discrepancy affects the phone’s system clock or only that app before assuming the entire device has the wrong time.
