Installing an iPhone app that includes a custom keyboard does not automatically enable or select that keyboard. Add it in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, then select it from the keyboard switcher while editing a supported text field. If it appears in some places but not others, the field or app may be preventing third-party keyboards.
First, tell which problem you have

For iPhone users: enable and select the keyboard
Add it to the enabled keyboard list
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard.
- Find the keyboard under the third-party keyboards list and tap it.
The app that provides the keyboard must be installed, but installation alone does not add its extension to the enabled list. The keyboard’s display name is what appears in Settings. If your iOS version uses slightly different wording, look for the installed third-party keyboards list in Keyboard settings.
Choose it for the current text session
- Open an app and tap a supported text field so the keyboard appears.
- Tap the Globe or input-switch key to cycle through enabled keyboards. If available, press and hold it to open the keyboard picker.
- Tap the keyboard you want to use.
Being enabled and being selected are separate steps. Apple’s setup and debugging instructions describe choosing an extension from the keyboard picker in a text-capable app.

Why it works in some fields but not others
Secure fields and phone pads
Some fields use the system keyboard by design. In particular, secure text-entry fields and fields using a phone-pad or name-phone-pad keyboard do not use a custom keyboard. Try it in a normal text field; the custom keyboard should be available there if enabled and selected. Apple documents these restrictions in its custom keyboard interface guidance and Virtual Keyboards guidance.
An app may reject third-party keyboards
If the keyboard is unavailable only in one app, that app may explicitly disallow third-party keyboard extensions. Test it in another app with an ordinary text field. If it works there, the difference may be the host app’s policy rather than a problem with your keyboard. Apple documents an API that lets apps reject the custom keyboard extension point in its interface guidance.

Full Access is not required just to activate a keyboard
Do not turn on Allow Full Access as a first troubleshooting step. Basic keyboard activation and selection do not require it. A keyboard may request Full Access for additional capabilities, such as network access or writing to a shared container with its containing app; those features require the user’s explicit approval in Settings. Consider the privacy implications before granting it. See Apple’s open-access documentation.

Confirm the extension is included and identifiable
- Make sure the Xcode project contains a Custom Keyboard Extension target and that the containing app includes it.
- Set a useful display name so users can identify it in Settings.
- Install the built app on the device, then add the keyboard through Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
For a basic device check, open a text-capable host such as Notes, begin editing a text field, and select the extension from the keyboard picker. Apple’s creation and debugging guide covers the target and activation flow.

Implement the input-mode switch affordance
Check needsInputModeSwitchKey and provide a key that switches input modes when the system requires one. The documented switching action is part of the input view controller API. On iPhones with Face ID, iOS may provide a Globe control below the keyboard automatically and set the property to false; account for that rather than assuming the extension must always draw its own switch key. Apple describes the property in its API reference and its custom keyboard guide.
Review keyboard extension configuration
Check the extension’s Info.plist keyboard attributes, including IsASCIICapable, PrefersRightToLeft, PrimaryLanguage, and RequestsOpenAccess. Language metadata affects the language shown in Settings and the system switcher. Apple’s App Extension Keys reference documents these attributes.

Investigate a keyboard that vanishes after launching
A keyboard extension runs in a separate process, and iOS can terminate it if it exceeds its memory limit. The limit varies by device; do not assume a single fixed threshold. Test across device models, respond to low-memory notifications, and release resources the extension no longer needs. Dismissing the keyboard does not necessarily end its process, so also check behavior across repeated presentations. Apple’s custom keyboard guide covers extension lifecycle and memory considerations.

Use the symptom to choose your next step
- Not listed in Settings: add it there; if you build the keyboard, verify the extension target and its inclusion in the containing app.
- Listed but absent everywhere: open a supported text field and explicitly select it with the input switcher.
- Absent only in a secure field, phone pad, or one app: check for a field restriction or a host app that blocks third-party keyboards.
- Launches, then disappears: if you are the developer, investigate crashes and memory use rather than treating it as an activation issue.
