If your Android phone won’t recognize a photo stick, first check whether it was detected but is simply missing from the app you expected. Connect the stick with the phone unlocked, open Files by Google, and look for the “USB available” notification. If the drive appears under “Storage devices,” you can browse its photos there—even if they do not appear in Photos or Gallery. If it does not appear, check the adapter, phone’s USB host support, and the stick on another device. Don’t format it unless you have a verified backup.
Check whether Android detected the photo stick
- Unlock your phone and connect the photo stick.
- Open Files by Google and look for the “USB available” notification. Tap it and allow access when prompted.
- In Files by Google, look under “Storage devices” for the drive. Open it to browse the image files directly.
- If the notification does not open, remove the stick and reconnect it once, as Google advises in its USB storage instructions.
A drive can be accessible in the file manager without appearing in Photos or your phone’s Gallery app. In that case, open the USB storage in Files by Google and tap an image to view it. Google says this interface can also be used to copy, move, delete, or rename files, so take care not to delete or move originals unintentionally.
Check the connector, adapter, and data connection
Compare the photo stick’s plug with the phone’s port. A Type-A stick cannot plug directly into a Type-C port; it needs a suitable adapter. Samsung’s instructions for Galaxy phones and tablets specify using a Type-A-to-Type-C USB-OTG adapter for a flash drive without a Type-C connector. That guidance is for Galaxy devices, not a promise of compatibility with every Android phone.
Try another known data-capable adapter or cable if one is available. Android Help notes that not all USB cables transfer files and recommends trying another cable when USB transfers fail. An adapter also needs to carry data; a connector that fits physically does not establish that it can connect the drive. Confirm your phone supports USB host or OTG
USB host or OTG support is a phone-model capability, not something an adapter can add. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact phone model before assuming it can read a USB storage accessory. Android’s platform compatibility requirements describe Android device behavior, but they do not make every phone, connector, drive, file system, or power requirement interchangeable.
If the connection and support checks do not help, restart the phone and install any available system updates. Android’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting and updating as steps for USB transfer problems. The exact settings path and labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.

Test the stick without risking the photos
Try the stick on a computer or another phone known to support USB storage. If another device can read it, copy the photos to a safe location and verify that the copied files open before attempting repairs. If it fails on multiple compatible devices, the drive or its data may be damaged.
If a format or capacity warning appears, stop before accepting any prompt that would erase or format the stick. Formatting can erase its contents. Back up and verify the photos elsewhere first, then consult the instructions for your exact phone and drive. The official guidance cited here does not establish one file system or capacity limit that applies to all Android phones and photo sticks.

What to check before replacing a stick or adapter
- Does the stick’s connector fit the phone, or does it need a Type-A-to-Type-C OTG adapter?
- Does the exact phone model support USB host or OTG?
- Is the adapter or cable capable of data transfer?
- Can another compatible device read the stick, and are the photos backed up and verified?
- Do the phone and drive manufacturers document support for the stick’s format, capacity, and power requirements?
