If it still will not play after you tap it, check the connection and then troubleshoot the browser or app you are using. X does not identify one universal cause, so test one change at a time to narrow down what is affecting playback.
First, check whether autoplay is off
Autoplay and playback are different symptoms. X videos and GIFs can autoplay in timelines, Moments, Explore, and other areas, but autoplay settings are separate on x.com and in the mobile app. A setting of Never means videos will not start automatically; it does not by itself show that playback after a tap is broken.
- In the X app: Open Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Video autoplay. Choose an option that allows autoplay if you want videos to start automatically.
- On x.com: Open Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Autoplay and choose an option that allows autoplay.
- On Android: Check whether Data Saver is on. X says Android Data Saver prevents videos from autoplaying.
After checking the setting, tap the video. If it plays when tapped, the issue was autoplay rather than playback.
If a video will not play after you tap it
Start with the platform where the failure occurs. Change one thing at a time and retry the same video; this helps you see whether the issue changes with the browser, network, or device. X recommends checking connectivity and software, but does not promise that any one step will fix every playback failure.

On x.com in a desktop browser
- Confirm that your internet connection is working, then reload the page and try the video again.
- Open x.com in a private or incognito window. If the video works there, browser data or an extension may be involved.
- Update the browser, then clear its cache and cookies if the problem persists.
- Temporarily disable extensions or ad blockers one at a time and test again. Restore them after testing; if one appears to affect playback, review that extension’s settings.
- If it still fails, try another supported browser.
X lists Edge, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and browsers based on WebKit or Chromium. Its supported-browser guidance covers versions released within the past year; older or modified browsers may not work as expected. See X’s supported-browser information.
In a mobile browser
Clear the mobile browser’s cache and cookies, then retry. If that does not help, restart the phone and check the connection. X’s mobile-web troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting the connection. Menu names for clearing site data vary by browser and operating-system version.

In the Android app
- Restart the device and confirm that the connection works.
- Try another Wi-Fi network if one is available. If you use a VPN, briefly disconnect it to test whether the connection changes playback; reconnect it afterward.
- Check autoplay and Data Saver if videos do not start automatically.
- If playback still fails, X lists clearing app data, logging out and back in, and reinstalling the app as later troubleshooting steps.
Clearing X app data resets notification and sync settings, so you may need to set those preferences again. Keep the app and Android up to date; an update is a useful compatibility check, not a guaranteed fix.
In the iPhone or iPad app
- Restart the device and check that the internet connection works.
- If the problem is autoplay rather than playback after a tap, check Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Video autoplay in X.
- Make sure the X app and iOS are current.
- If the basic checks do not help, X lists removing and reinstalling the app among its troubleshooting steps.

If the problem is a live video or replay
X recommends watching on a strong network connection, trying a different network or browser, and using an up-to-date app or browser. Its guidance does not establish that these steps resolve every live-video or replay failure. See X’s video help.

How to narrow down what is causing it
- Works in a private window: Browser cache, cookies, or an extension is worth investigating. Test extensions individually rather than disabling them all permanently.
- Works in another browser: Focus on the original browser’s version, stored data, or extensions.
- Works on another network: The original connection or its restrictions may be involved. X recommends comparing networks for playback problems, but that comparison does not identify the exact cause.
- Works on another device: Focus on the affected device’s app, browser, or settings.
These comparisons help isolate where to look; they are not proof of a specific fault. The available X guidance does not establish why a particular post fails, whether a service-wide outage is occurring, or that a viewer-side codec, account restriction, or device fault is responsible. X’s note about unsupported video formats concerns uploading and does not establish a cause for ordinary playback failures.
