A blurry or unexpectedly cropped WordPress featured image usually comes down to one of two things: the page is displaying an unsuitable generated image size, or a crop is being applied by WordPress, the theme, or the block layout. Find the actual image file and where the crop occurs before changing settings; then regenerate image sizes if you change how they are created.
First, identify the image WordPress is actually displaying
A featured image shown on a page is not necessarily the original file you uploaded. WordPress creates multiple image sizes, and a theme can request a particular one. The displayed file may therefore be too small for its rendered dimensions or may already have been cropped.
- Open the affected page and inspect the image itself. Note the image URL and, if available, its pixel dimensions. You can open the image in a new tab or inspect the page’s HTML to identify the file being requested.
- Compare the file’s pixel dimensions with the image’s displayed size. If a small variant is being enlarged, it can look soft. Check whether a larger, appropriate image size is available rather than enlarging the small variant further.
- Compare the displayed image with the original in the Media Library. If the original is sharp but the displayed version is not, focus on the selected size, theme output, or delivery behavior rather than assuming the upload itself is the problem.
WordPress’s theme documentation describes several standard image sizes and how themes can request them, so the URL and dimensions of the file actually served are more useful than guessing which size a page uses: Featured Images & Post Thumbnails.
Fix a blurry featured image
Check whether a small variant is being enlarged
Compare the served file’s pixel dimensions with the size at which the page displays it. If the displayed area is larger than the available detail in that file, the image can appear soft. Ask the theme or site administrator which registered size the page requests; the theme may be selecting a thumbnail or another intermediate image instead of a larger suitable version.

Check the original upload
WordPress notes that resolution affects image clarity and discusses resizing and sharpening reduced images in its image resizing guidance. A higher-resolution source may help when the original itself is too small, but sharpening cannot restore detail that was never present.
Make sure the needed size exists
If the theme needs a larger intermediate size, confirm that the size is registered and that the page requests it. After changing image-size settings or switching themes, regenerate variants for existing uploads. Registering a size does not resize old featured images; the WordPress reference for set_post_thumbnail_size() explicitly says, “This function will not resize your existing featured images.”

Find where the crop is happening
A crop can be introduced while WordPress generates an image variant, by the theme’s featured-image size, or by the way an image is displayed in a block. These are separate settings, so changing one may not affect the others.
| Where to check | What can cause the crop | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Media settings | The standard thumbnail size can use an exact-dimension square crop. | Review the thumbnail dimensions and whether exact-dimension cropping is enabled. |
| Theme image size | A theme can register a custom featured-image size with crop behavior. | Confirm which named size the theme requests and how it is registered. |
| Image block display | A selected aspect ratio with Scale set to Cover can crop the visible image. | Use Contain to show the whole source, or adjust the focal point if Cover is required. |
Check the Media thumbnail settings
In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Media. Review the thumbnail width and height and whether Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions is enabled. WordPress documents the standard thumbnail default as 150 × 150 pixels, square-cropped, and adjustable in these settings: Media Settings. This is a documented default, not a universal featured-image size: themes can request other sizes.

Check the active theme’s size and crop behavior
A theme can register a custom post-thumbnail size and specify whether it should be cropped. The WordPress developer reference explains that a non-cropped size is resized proportionally, while a cropped size is cut to its requested dimensions: set_post_thumbnail_size() and add_image_size(). The core theme handbook lists these default size examples: thumbnail, up to 150 × 150 pixels; medium, up to 300 × 300 pixels; medium-large, 768 pixels wide with no height limit; and large, up to 1024 × 1024 pixels. Sites and themes can change the output, so treat those as handbook defaults rather than guarantees for your page: Featured Images & Post Thumbnails.
Check the Image block’s aspect ratio and scale
If the image is placed with an Image block, inspect its aspect ratio and Scale settings. Cover fills the selected area and may crop the image; Contain preserves the full source but may leave empty space. Adjusting the focal point can help keep the important part visible when Cover is in use. These display choices do not edit the original file: Image block.
Regenerate image sizes after changing settings or themes
Changing a size definition does not recreate variants for images already in the Media Library. If you changed the registered size, crop behavior, or active theme, regenerate existing image sizes so WordPress can produce the variants your current setup needs. WordPress Learn describes this step for theme changes in its featured images and post thumbnails tutorial.
- Make the size or theme change first.
- Use an image-size regeneration method available to your site to rebuild variants for existing uploads. The exact interface depends on the method you choose; WordPress’s size reference establishes why regeneration is needed, but does not prescribe one universal dashboard path.
- Return to the affected page and verify that it now requests the intended size. If it still displays the old file, refresh the page and investigate site-specific caching or image-optimization behavior.
Retest the page and narrow down site-specific causes
After the change, inspect the affected page again at desktop and mobile widths. Check that the image URL, pixel dimensions, sharpness, and visible crop now match the layout. If the Media Library original looks different from the delivered image, compare the delivered file with the original and investigate any optimization or caching layers active on that site; their involvement must be confirmed rather than assumed.

- If only the crop is wrong, recheck the active theme’s crop size and any Image block Cover setting.
- If the image is still soft, compare the served variant’s dimensions with the display size and check the original’s resolution.
- If the problem appears only on older uploads, verify that variants were regenerated after the size or theme change.
- If Media settings seem to have no effect, check whether the theme is using a custom size instead of the standard thumbnail.
