A free PlayStation game that will not download can point to three different problems: an entitlement or account issue, a download queue or storage problem, or a stalled network connection. First identify what you see: a padlock or missing title calls for an account check; a download that never starts calls for queue, storage, and system-software checks; a download that has started but stopped calls for service-status and connection checks. These steps apply to PS5 and PS4, and begin with checks that do not erase your data.
Do not treat every failure as a bad internet connection. A cable cannot provide a license the account does not have, and restoring licenses will not make a full drive larger. Match the fix to the symptom, and move from account and queue checks to more involved steps only if needed.
What should I check first?
Before changing settings, establish which account and entitlement should provide the game. “Free” does not necessarily mean that every access rule is the same: a game may be an ordinary free-to-play title, a monthly PlayStation Plus game, a catalog title, or a purchase shared by another account on the console.
- Note the symptom. A padlock or a title missing from the library is usually an access or license question. A queued download that never begins points first to the queue, free space, or system software. A download that begins and then stalls calls for a service-status and internet check.
- Check the acquiring account. Sign in to the account that obtained the game and check its library and transaction history where applicable. If another account obtained it, verify that account’s sharing or primary-console settings.
- Check the entitlement type. Confirm whether access came from an ordinary acquisition, a Plus monthly game, or a catalog. Monthly Plus games require an active membership; catalog games may leave the service. A Plus membership does not fix a download problem for an ordinary free-to-play game.
- Use the least disruptive fix first. Check the queue, storage, and connection before using Safe Mode. Do not choose a reset or initialization option as a generic download fix.
This order helps separate causes that can look similar. For example, if the game is missing from the account’s library, repeatedly canceling and restarting a download will not create the entitlement. If the game is present and the download is queued, start with the queue rather than changing sharing settings. If progress stopped after starting, check whether PlayStation services are affected before assuming the console itself is at fault.

Why is the game locked, padlocked, or missing?
Start with the account and entitlement, not with the download file. A padlock can mean the signed-in account does not have the needed license, another account’s sharing is not configured for this console, or a family restriction applies.
Confirm that the game is still available to this account
- For a game obtained by the signed-in account, look for it in that account’s library and check its transaction history if needed.
- For a monthly PlayStation Plus game, confirm the membership is active.
- For a catalog game, check that the title is still included. Catalog availability can change, so a past ability to download does not establish that the title remains available now.
- If another account obtained the game, check the sharing settings on the account that owns the entitlement.
These entitlement cases are not interchangeable. A monthly Plus game depends on an active membership. A catalog title also depends on the title remaining in the service. An ordinary free-to-play download is not fixed by subscribing to Plus. If you are unsure which case applies, check the account’s library and transaction history, and verify the game’s current Plus status rather than relying on an old download or store listing.
Check sharing on the console that is meant to play it
On PS5, sign in to the owning account and open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4 on the owning account.

If the signed-in account itself never obtained the game or no longer has the relevant subscription entitlement, changing sharing settings will not create access. Check the owner’s account on the intended console; changing settings on another account or console may not address the entitlement you are trying to use.
Restore licenses after confirming the entitlement
If the correct account has access but the console still shows a lock, restore licenses. PlayStation says: “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” Restoring licenses is a nondestructive account/license step, not a way to recover an expired entitlement or make a catalog title available after it leaves the service.

If the padlock covers the whole image rather than appearing as a game-license lock, check the family manager’s restrictions. Do not assume that the download is corrupted. The type and placement of the lock are useful clues: first confirm whether the console is indicating a game entitlement or a restriction set by the family manager.
What can I do if the download will not start?
If the download remains queued or does not begin, work through the console’s download queue, retry from the library, and compare available storage with the game’s stated minimum. Check for a system-software update as well. These steps address different possibilities: a queue retry refreshes the attempt, available space determines whether installation can proceed, and system software is a separate console check.

Pause and resume, then retry from the library

Pause and resume is a sensible first queue action because it does not require changing account settings or adding storage. If it fails, cancel and delete the queue entry and start again from the library. That retry is useful only if the account is entitled to the game and the console has enough room; if either condition is missing, address it first.
Canceling and deleting a queue entry is a way to restart the download attempt; it is not the same as deleting saved data. If the title is not available to the account, however, repeatedly retrying the queue will not resolve that entitlement issue. Also distinguish a failed queue entry from an installed game: the troubleshooting action described here is to remove the download entry and retry from the library, not to erase game saves.
Compare free space with the game’s requirement
Check available storage at Settings > Storage and compare it with the game’s displayed minimum free-space requirement. On PS5, find that information in Game Library > game > more menu > View Product. On PS4, check the game’s Details section in the Store. Do not assume that a game will fit simply because the console has some free space.
Use the displayed requirement for the specific game rather than guessing from its “free” price or from the space used by another title. If the requirement is not met, make room before repeating the same download attempt. If it is met, look at the other branches—queue, software, service status, or connection—rather than buying storage automatically.

If space is insufficient, first consider removing or moving games already installed. PlayStation says purchased games that have been deleted can be downloaded again from the library. Take care to distinguish a game installation from saved data: deleting a game is not the same operation as deleting its saves. This free remedy is worth considering before buying a drive, especially if the shortage is limited to one installation.
Check system software and PlayStation services
Install the current console system software if an update is available. Also check PlayStation service status for your own region and at the time you are trying to download. The status page is live; a status observed at another time or in another region does not establish whether a service is currently affected for you.
Service status is especially relevant when a download will not start or when a license confirmation cannot complete. It is still only one check: if the service appears available, continue with the console’s network test or the relevant account and storage steps. If the service is affected, retry later rather than expecting a local wireless change to repair a PlayStation-side issue.

What if the download starts but gets stuck?
When a download has begun and then stops progressing, check PlayStation service status first, then test the console’s internet connection. A wired connection can help distinguish a local wireless problem from other causes, but it cannot resolve a PlayStation-side service interruption or missing license.

If the test points to a local connection issue, try connecting by LAN cable and retrying the download. If the test does not point to a local problem, avoid assuming that a different cable or a storage purchase will address the cause; recheck service status and the error message.

PlayStation also recommends a wired connection when re-downloading where possible. Treat it as a way to check a suspected local wireless issue, not as a guaranteed fix for a server-side problem. If a wired retry changes nothing and service status is normal, preserve the exact error and continue to the recommended advanced step rather than cycling through unrelated fixes.
When should I use Safe Mode?
Use Safe Mode only after checking the account, queue, storage, system software, service status, and connection. The download guidance recommends clearing the cache and rebuilding the database on PS5, or rebuilding the database on PS4. These named database options are distinct from resetting or initializing the console.
- Turn the console off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database on PS5 or Rebuild Database on PS4.
Follow the labels on screen carefully. Safe Mode contains options with very different consequences: the database option is the recommended troubleshooting choice here, while Reset PS5, Initialize PS4, and system-software reinstallation are not substitutes for it. PlayStation says reset and initialization options delete user data. Do not select one of those options simply because a download is stuck, and do not treat every Safe Mode option as a harmless reset.

What do common PlayStation download error codes mean?
An error code can narrow the troubleshooting path, but follow the guidance for the exact code rather than treating all download failures alike. Two examples illustrate why it helps to record the code instead of reporting only that the game will not download.

These are examples, not a complete code list or a diagnosis for every failed download. The PS5 code points toward a possible connection problem during license confirmation, so check status and the account/license path. The PS4 code describes a suspended download with likely corrupted content, so restarting that download is relevant; if it happens again, review the local network. Use the instructions for the code actually displayed on your console.
Should I add storage to download the game?
Consider extra storage only after checking the game’s requirement and making room with existing installations. If a storage upgrade is genuinely needed, the choice between a PS5 M.2 SSD and USB extended storage depends on whether you want to play PS5 games directly from that drive. An added drive is not a remedy for a license, queue, or service problem.

USB extended storage and an M.2 SSD are not interchangeable for PS5-game playback. If your goal is to download and launch PS5 games without moving them back, USB storage does not serve that purpose; PS5 games stored there must be moved to console or M.2 storage to play. If the goal is to archive PS5 games or play qualifying PS4 titles directly from the drive, USB may suit that use. For PS4 extended storage, consult PlayStation’s separate compatibility and connection guidance rather than assuming every USB drive will work.
For an M.2 purchase, check the exact candidate’s published specifications against the supported interface, capacity, speed recommendation, form factor, heat-dissipation needs, and combined drive/heatsink dimensions. A broad label such as “NVMe” by itself does not establish compatibility. PlayStation lists a #1 Phillips screwdriver for installation, and formatting a newly installed SSD erases data already on that drive. For USB storage, check the stated SuperSpeed rating and capacity range, and remember that formatting also erases existing drive data. These are vendor specifications, not evidence that a particular model will work or that a download will succeed.
Start with free remedies: compare the game’s required and available space, then remove or move existing games if appropriate. Buy hardware only when the storage constraint is confirmed or recurring and the drive’s actual role matches your need. A cable belongs to the network-check branch; a compatible SSD or USB drive belongs to the storage branch. Neither should be presented as a general PlayStation download fix.

Contact Support if the game entitlement is valid and the relevant queue, storage, service, connection, and recommended database checks have not resolved the problem. Give Support details that help identify the specific failure rather than only saying that a game will not download.
- The exact error code or on-screen message.
- The console model and the account or entitlement type involved, without sharing your password.
- The steps that reproduce the issue and the time you attempted the download.
- A screenshot or video of the message or stalled queue, if possible.
If a code appears, use its code-specific instructions; for example, a possible license-confirmation connection failure and a suspended download with likely corrupted content point to different next steps. Include whether the download never started or began and then stalled, and whether the game is an ordinary free-to-play title, a Plus benefit, or shared from another account. Those distinctions help explain which checks you have already made.

Does canceling a download delete my saved data?
