Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If page-break-after appears to do nothing in wkhtmltopdf, inspect the element’s containing layout before changing the rule itself. A floated ancestor is a documented cause in issue reports: removing the parent float fixed one reproduction, and another report used PDF-only float: none rules. Then test ancestor overflow, isolate table-row pagination, and reproduce the result with the exact wkhtmltopdf build and a minimal document.
What “ignored” means in wkhtmltopdf
There are two different symptoms:
- The expected break never appears, so the next content continues on the same page.
- The break works, but
page-break-after: alwaysleaves an unwanted blank page at the end because there is no content after the element.
These reports come from particular wkhtmltopdf and WebKit builds. They show real failure modes, not a guarantee that every current package behaves identically. Always verify the PDF produced by the version you deploy.
Fix it in the order most likely to explain the symptom
- Record the wkhtmltopdf version and operating-system version.
- Reduce the document to the content around the break and its ancestor styles.
- Inspect every containing element for
float. - If that does not explain the result, inspect ancestor
overflow. - If the break is inside a table, test table pagination separately.
- Check whether the apparent failure is actually an unwanted trailing page.
- Render the minimal case with the exact deployed binary and inspect the PDF.
1. Record the exact renderer
Run:
wkhtmltopdf --version
Save the complete output, operating-system and version, command-line switches, HTML, CSS and any JavaScript used. The project’s support guidance asks for these details and a reproducible HTML/CSS/JavaScript test case. A distribution package, patched-Qt build and another 0.12-era build can produce different results.
2. Build a minimal reproduction
Remove unrelated scripts, fonts, images and layout components. Keep the break element, its following content and each ancestor’s layout declarations. This tells you whether the failure belongs to the document structure or to a broader page.

</body>
</html>
Render it with the same command and binary used in production:
wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdf
Then add your real ancestors and styles one at a time. The first change that reproduces the failure is more useful than a large page that fails in several ways at once.
Check floated ancestors first
In wkhtmltopdf issue #1604, the reporter wrote that removing float: left; from the parent fixed the page-break example. Issue #2371 describes a similar case in which the workaround was PDF-specific CSS applying float: none to parent elements where breaks were needed.
The important detail is that the float may be on an ancestor, not on the element carrying page-break-after. Inspect the complete containing chain in your HTML. A typical screen layout might look like this:

@media print {
.pdf-page-break-container {
float: none;
}
}
Replace .pdf-page-break-container with your selector. Do not remove every float globally until you know it is responsible; that can destroy a two-column screen layout and create a different PDF problem. The issue reports support this as a case-specific experiment, not as a universal fix.
Inspect ancestor overflow next
An issue-thread comment links overflow: auto on an ancestor with page-break problems and suggests testing overflow: visible. This is user-reported diagnostic evidence, so reproduce it in your own minimal case before adopting it.
@media print {
.report-wrapper {
overflow: visible;
}
}
Apply the override only to the wrapper that clips or scrolls the content. Check for overflow: auto, hidden or other non-visible values on every ancestor between the break element and the document root. If changing overflow has no effect in the minimal file, revert the override and continue investigating.
When the break is inside a table
Table pagination is a separate failure mode. A report involving large table rows describes before/after breaks being ignored even though the author did not observe floats or overflow. A row that is taller than the remaining page, or that must be fragmented across pages, should therefore be isolated from the float investigation.
Make a table-only test
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<style>
table { width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; }
td { border: 1px solid #999; padding: 8px; }
.break-after { page-break-after: always; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<table>
<tr><td>Short row</td></tr>
<tr class="break-after">
<td>Replace this with the large row that fails.</td>
</tr>
<tr><td>Following row</td></tr>
</table>
</body>
</html>
Render the table alone, then test the same content outside a table. If the break works outside the table but not for the row, treat it as table pagination rather than proof that the float workaround is wrong. The cited 0.12.3 development-build report specifically remained unresolved after the reporter ruled out floats and overflow.

Check for the unwanted trailing-page variant
In a 0.12-era issue discussion, a maintainer attributed an extra final page to an updated WebKit engine respecting page-break-after: always even when no content followed the element. If your PDF has the expected internal break plus one empty page at the end, the rule may be working.
Confirm that the final element does not carry an unconditional break. Apply the rule only where another section follows, or use a class that marks non-final sections. Test this change with the exact binary and document that produced the blank page; the report is version-specific.
Use print-only CSS without damaging the screen layout
Keep PDF workarounds inside @media print whenever possible. This lets the browser layout retain its floats and scrolling behavior while the PDF layout receives the targeted changes.
@media print {
.pdf-page-break-container { float: none; }
.pdf-scroll-region { overflow: visible; }
.section:not(:last-child) { page-break-after: always; }
}
Use your real selectors and verify the result visually. A selector that matches the wrong ancestor can make the break appear fixed while introducing overlapping or reordered content elsewhere.
Troubleshooting matrix
| Symptom | Test | Likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Break ignored in a multi-column layout | Remove the containing float in the minimal file | Float-related case reported in issues #1604 and #2371 | Try a targeted print rule with float: none |
| No change after the float test | Toggle ancestor overflow: auto or hidden to visible |
Possible overflow interaction reported by an issue commenter | Keep the override only if your reproduction confirms it |
| Break fails only for a large table row | Render the table without the rest of the page | Distinct table-row pagination problem | Do not assume the float workaround applies; document the exact build |
| One extra blank page at the end | Remove the final element’s unconditional break | Possible trailing-page behavior reported in a 0.12-era discussion | Apply the break only when following content exists |
| Different machines produce different PDFs | Compare wkhtmltopdf --version, OS and switches |
Build or WebKit differences | Pin and record the production binary, then retest |
What to include in a useful bug report
Provide the exact wkhtmltopdf version, operating-system and version, command line, a minimal HTML file, its CSS and JavaScript, and the generated PDF or a precise description of the wrong page. State whether the failing element is inside a float, whether any ancestor has non-visible overflow, whether a table row is involved, and whether the result is a missing break or an extra trailing page. This makes the issue reproducible instead of turning it into a general claim about all wkhtmltopdf releases.

When to consider another renderer
If targeted CSS changes do not resolve the minimal case, compare a different HTML-to-PDF renderer against your actual document. Evaluate page-break fidelity, table handling, reproducibility of the version or build, required CSS and JavaScript support, and the migration work. The issue evidence does not establish that one replacement is universally better, so run the same fixture through each candidate and inspect the PDFs.
Or skip the browser setup
If your real requirement is a reliable website capture rather than debugging a local wkhtmltopdf document, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API also supports full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
The Bottom Line
Start with the containing layout: remove or print-override ancestor floats, then test ancestor overflow. Isolate table rows, distinguish a missing break from a trailing blank page, and validate every change with a minimal file and the exact wkhtmltopdf build you deploy.
