The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The usual reason is that the shortcut you used did not save a file. PrtSc and Alt+PrtSc copy an image to the clipboard, so no new file appears until you paste and save it. Windows+Shift+S opens Snipping Tool, whose current documentation describes automatic saving and a configurable folder. Windows+PrtScn is documented by Microsoft Surface as saving to Pictures, Screenshots. Your Windows build, keyboard, OneDrive setup, or organization policy can change the visible path.
Use the capture method as your starting point, then check Snipping Tool settings, both local and OneDrive-backed Pictures folders, and a broad file search. The steps below follow that order so you can find an existing image before changing anything.
Identify the shortcut before looking for a folder
Windows has several screenshot paths with different destinations. The key distinction is clipboard capture versus file capture.
| Method | What happens | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| PrtSc or PrtScn | Copies the full screen to the clipboard; it does not, by itself, create a file. | Open Paint or another image editor, press Ctrl+V, then use Save or Save As. Microsoft documents this behavior in Copy the window or screen contents. |
| Alt+PrtSc | Copies the active window to the clipboard. | Paste into an app and save manually. |
| Windows+Shift+S or Snipping Tool | Opens the snipping overlay and editor. Current Snipping Tool documentation describes automatic saving and a setting for the save behavior and destination. | Open the Snipping Tool notification or editor, then inspect More > Settings. |
| Windows+PrtScn | Microsoft Surface guidance says the image is saved automatically under Pictures > Screenshots. | Check the local Pictures folder and the equivalent OneDrive location if Pictures backup is enabled. |
The shortcut names on a keyboard may be abbreviated (for example, PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen). On some keyboards you must also hold Fn. The documented behavior is tied to the shortcut that reaches Windows, not the wording printed on the key.

Recover a screenshot step by step
- Recall exactly what you pressed. If it was only PrtSc or Alt+PrtSc, stop searching for a new file and paste the clipboard contents into Paint. Choose File > Save as, select PNG or another format, and choose a known folder such as Documents.
- Check the Snipping Tool editor. After Windows+Shift+S, select a region, window, or full screen. Select the notification that appears, or open Snipping Tool from Start and look for the captured image. Use its Save button to write a file explicitly if automatic saving did not occur.
- Inspect automatic-save settings. In Snipping Tool, open More (…) > Settings. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool support page describes automatic saving and the option to change the default Screenshots folder. Confirm that automatic saving is enabled and note the actual path shown there.
- Try the documented Windows+PrtScn location. For that shortcut, start at File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. The location is documented on Microsoft’s Surface page, so treat it as the normal Surface path rather than a guarantee for every Windows PC.
- Check OneDrive’s copy of Pictures. If Pictures is backed up, browse the OneDrive version of Pictures and its Screenshots subfolder. OneDrive can redirect the apparent path while leaving applications referring to Pictures. Microsoft now recommends backing up the Pictures folder; the old screenshot-specific toggle is no longer available.
- Search both storage locations. In File Explorer or Windows Search, search the whole PC and OneDrive for recent image files, especially
*.png. Sort by Date modified and look at the capture time. Microsoft’s file-search guidance explains finding files across Windows locations. - Run a controlled test. Take a small snip, wait for the notification, open it, and use Save As to a newly created folder such as
DocumentsScreenshot test. If that file appears, the original image was probably clipboard-only or saved in a different configured location.
When Snipping Tool is involved
Automatic saving can be changed
Snipping Tool is not limited to one hard-coded folder. Its Settings page controls whether captures are saved automatically and which Screenshots folder is used. A folder may have been moved to another drive, renamed, or redirected by Windows or an administrator. Read the path displayed in Settings instead of assuming it is the default.
The editor and the file are separate steps
A snip can be visible in the editor even when no file has yet been written. Use the editor’s Save command and watch for the destination and filename. If Save As succeeds to a known folder, the capture mechanism works; the problem is the automatic destination or the earlier shortcut, not the screen content.
Build and policy differences matter
Microsoft’s cited Snipping Tool instructions cover current Windows 10 and Windows 11 experiences, but labels and availability can vary by build, device, keyboard, or organizational policy. A managed computer may hide settings or apply a different default folder. In that case, ask your organization’s IT support for the approved capture and storage path.
Check Pictures and OneDrive correctly
Local Pictures
In File Explorer, select Pictures, then look for Screenshots. If you do not see it, use the address bar to inspect the Pictures path shown by your account and search within that folder for recently modified PNG files. Do not create a replacement folder merely because the expected one is empty; first verify which folder Snipping Tool or Windows is configured to use.

OneDrive-backed Pictures
When OneDrive folder backup includes Pictures, the working location may appear under your OneDrive account rather than only under C:Users<name>Pictures. Check both locations and the OneDrive status icons. Microsoft’s folder-backup guidance describes including Pictures in backup.
Do not look for an old “Save screenshots to OneDrive” switch. Microsoft states in its OneDrive screenshot guidance that “The ‘Save screenshots to OneDrive’ feature is no longer available in the OneDrive settings.” The supported approach is to include Pictures in OneDrive backup, then search the backed-up folder.
Use search when the folder view is misleading
A missing Screenshots folder does not prove that the image was lost. Search can reveal a redirected path, a OneDrive copy, or a file saved under a different name.
- Search from This PC, not only from the current folder.
- Repeat the search from the OneDrive root if OneDrive is in use.
- Filter by Date modified around the moment of capture.
- Start with
*.png; then check JPEG or WebP if you deliberately changed the save format. - Open a result’s file location to learn the real destination, rather than moving it immediately.
If search returns no file but clipboard paste works, the capture was never saved. If a controlled Save As works but automatic captures vanish, compare the automatic-save switch and path in Snipping Tool Settings.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“I pressed Print Screen and nothing appeared.”
Press Ctrl+V in Paint. If an image appears, save it. That result confirms clipboard capture and explains the empty folder; no automatic file was expected.
“Windows+Shift+S captured the area, but the folder is empty.”
Open the notification or Snipping Tool editor and save the image explicitly. Then inspect More > Settings for automatic saving and the configured folder. A changed path is more likely than a failed capture when the editor shows the snip.
“Windows+PrtScn made the screen flash, but I cannot find the file.”
Check both Pictures > Screenshots and the OneDrive-backed Pictures path. Search the PC and OneDrive for recently modified PNG files. Surface’s documented path is a useful first check, not proof that every manufacturer’s configuration uses the same location.
“The screenshot is in OneDrive, not Pictures.”
That can be normal when Pictures backup is enabled. Use the OneDrive copy as the authoritative location for that setup and confirm the folder included in OneDrive backup.

“Saving fails or the folder is unavailable.”
Use Save As to a newly created folder under Documents. If that succeeds, the original destination may be redirected, offline, permission-restricted, or controlled by policy. If saving fails everywhere, contact IT on a managed device and include the exact error and Windows build.
“The steps do not match my menus.”
Windows updates, device makers, keyboard layouts, and organization policies can change labels. Use the current Snipping Tool page’s Settings path as the reference, and rely on the path shown on your own machine rather than a copied folder string.
Make future captures predictable
- For a guaranteed file, use Snipping Tool’s Save command or Windows+PrtScn followed by a check of Pictures.
- For clipboard shortcuts, paste and save immediately before replacing the clipboard contents.
- Keep a known test folder in Documents for diagnosing capture problems.
- If you use OneDrive, decide whether Pictures backup is intended and verify its status before relying on a local-only path.
- On a work or school PC, document the approved storage location and any policy that changes screenshot behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is an automated screenshot of a website rather than a picture of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It is separate from Windows’ clipboard and Snipping Tool folders, so it avoids browser-profile setup when your workflow is code-driven.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot be recovered after I copied something else?
Usually not from the clipboard: a new copy operation replaces the previous image. Retake the capture, then paste and save it immediately.
Why does the same shortcut use a different folder on two computers?
The effective destination can differ because Snipping Tool settings, OneDrive Pictures backup, Windows build, device configuration, or organizational policy differ. Read the path shown in Snipping Tool Settings on each PC.
Should I reinstall Snipping Tool when captures are missing?
Not as a first step. Confirm whether the shortcut was clipboard-only, check automatic-save settings and both Pictures locations, and run a Save As test before changing software.
