Windows 11 has two different screenshot workflows that are easy to confuse: Windows + Shift + S opens an on-screen snipping overlay and puts the result on the clipboard, while Windows + PrtSc captures the entire screen and saves a file in PicturesScreenshots. If you expect a file from the first shortcut, or press a differently labelled laptop key, the shortcut can appear broken even when the capture succeeded. Use the checks below to identify the exact failure, verify the keyboard setting, and recover the image.
First identify what “not working” means
Before changing settings, classify the symptom. The fix depends on whether Windows ignores the keypress, opens the wrong workflow, copies an image without creating a file, or saves the file somewhere you did not check.
- No visible response: the overlay does not appear and no image is available.
- Unexpected overlay: you wanted a full-screen file but Windows opens the selection tool.
- Capture appears to work, but no file exists: the image may be on the clipboard rather than saved to disk.
- The key seems missing: your keyboard may label it

Do not treat these as one failure. Test each documented workflow separately.

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe Windows + Shift + S as opening the snipping-tool overlay to capture an image snapshot. That shortcut is not, by itself, a promise that a PNG file will appear in your Pictures folder.

Fix the common “no file” misunderstanding
Paste the clipboard image
- Press
Windows + Shift + S. - When the screen dims, drag over the area you want, or select a different capture mode in the overlay.
- Open Paint, an image editor, a document, or an email composer.
- Press
Ctrl + V. If the image pastes, the shortcut worked.
You can also open Snipping Tool from the notification or Start menu to inspect, annotate, and save the snip.
Check clipboard history
Press Windows + V to open clipboard history. Windows says this feature is not enabled by default; if prompted, turn it on and then repeat the capture. Clipboard history is a diagnostic aid, not a replacement for saving an image: items can be cleared or expire according to Windows’ clipboard behavior.
Look in the documented full-screen folder
For a file saved automatically, press Windows + PrtSc, then open File Explorer and go to PicturesScreenshots. If the folder is redirected by your organization or cloud-storage configuration, use File Explorer search for a recently created image while confirming the shortcut itself first.
Run a reliable troubleshooting sequence
1. Test the overlay independently
Press Windows + Shift + S. A dimmed screen and capture controls confirm that Windows is receiving the shortcut. Select a small area and paste it into Paint. This test avoids relying on the Print Screen key.

2. Test full-screen saving independently
Press Windows + PrtSc, wait briefly, and inspect PicturesScreenshots. This verifies the file-saving path and distinguishes a clipboard result from an absent capture.
3. Check the Print Screen option
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Accessibility, then Keyboard.
- Find the setting that uses the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Set it according to the workflow you want, then test
PrtScagain.
The setting changes what the single Print Screen key does; it does not change the separate Windows + Shift + S and Windows + PrtSc workflows.
4. Identify the physical key
Look across the keyboard’s upper-right area for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Compact and laptop keyboards vary: the function may share another key or be placed elsewhere. Use the manufacturer-documented function combination for your exact model rather than assuming one universal Fn shortcut.
5. Confirm which output you need
If your goal is a selected rectangle, use the overlay and paste or save from Snipping Tool. If your goal is an immediate full-screen file, use Windows + PrtSc and inspect the Screenshots folder. Choosing the shortcut by output prevents a successful clipboard capture from being mistaken for a failed file save.

When the overlay itself does not appear
Start with the alternate route: use Windows + PrtSc to see whether a full-screen file is created. If that works, the keyboard and Windows key are being recognized, and the problem is limited to the overlay path. If neither documented shortcut produces an observable result, check the physical key labels and try the on-screen keyboard to determine whether the hardware key is the issue. The official documentation does not establish a complete list of root causes for every unresponsive shortcut, so treat further isolation as testing rather than as a confirmed diagnosis.
- Use the Start menu to open Snipping Tool directly and make a capture. This checks the app without a shortcut.
- Use another keyboard, if available, to compare the same shortcuts.
- Restart Windows after recording which workflow failed, then repeat the two independent tests.

Save, edit, and find a snip
A Windows + Shift + S capture is initially a clipboard result. Paste it into an app and use that app’s Save command, or open Snipping Tool from the notification to edit and save. For a repeatable file workflow, use Windows + PrtSc and retrieve the image from PicturesScreenshots. Keep the two destinations separate in your mental model: clipboard content is transient, while the Screenshots folder contains files you can rename, move, or back up.

Remote desktops and virtual machines
Remote-session software can intercept Windows-key combinations or route them to the host. Test the shortcut on the local desktop and consult the remote tool’s keyboard-capture setting before changing Windows’ Print Screen option.
