A missing WhatsApp Web thumbnail usually has one of three causes: the account sending the link has enabled Disable link previews, WhatsApp Web is not connected cleanly, or the linked page does not expose an accessible preview image. Check those in that order. If only one website is affected, investigate that site; if every link is affected, start with the sender’s privacy setting and the Web connection.
Start with the symptom
Use the scope of the problem to choose the first check. This is diagnostic triage, not a guarantee that one symptom has only one cause.

1. Check the sender’s preview privacy setting
WhatsApp’s Help Center documents an optional Disable link previews control. When it is enabled, links sent by that account do not generate a preview. The setting is off by default, and it does not affect previews on links that account receives from other people.
- Open WhatsApp on the phone belonging to the account that is sending the link.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Advanced on Android or iOS.
- Turn Disable link previews off if the sender wants cards and thumbnails.
- Return to WhatsApp Web and send the URL again as a new message.
This is a sender-side control. Changing a recipient’s setting cannot make a preview appear for a link sent by somebody else. A setting change also does not promise that an already-sent message will be rebuilt; test with a fresh send.

2. Confirm that WhatsApp Web is actually connected
Preview generation needs a working Web session as well as a working destination page. If messages, media, or status updates are also delayed, treat this as a general WhatsApp Web connection problem rather than a thumbnail-specific failure.
- Look for the connection state in WhatsApp Web and reload the page.
- If the problem remains, clear the browser’s cache and cookies for the Web session.
- Sign out of WhatsApp Web, sign in again by linking the device, and restart the browser.
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot. If the hotspot works, the original network may be filtering traffic.
- Ask a network administrator to allow traffic to
web.whatsapp.comand.whatsapp.netwhen a firewall or proxy is in use.
These are WhatsApp’s general Web connection remedies. They are sensible checks for missing previews, but WhatsApp does not describe them as a preview-cache repair or guarantee that one of them will restore a particular card.
3. Check browser compatibility
Use a current release of a browser WhatsApp lists as supported: Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, or Safari. Update the browser, disable extensions that block scripts or requests for a test, and retry in a private window. A private-window test is useful because it separates a broken site session or extension from the WhatsApp account itself; it is not a substitute for signing in to the correct WhatsApp account.

4. If one website is affected, inspect its preview metadata
When links from other domains work, the destination page is the strongest lead. Secondary technical guidance commonly points to Open Graph fields as inputs used by messaging clients: og:title, og:description, and og:image. WhatsApp does not publish a complete specification of its Web preview parser, so treat these as practical diagnostics rather than guaranteed requirements.

Inspect the HTML delivered to a normal visitor
- Open the exact URL in a browser.
- View the page source, not only a client-rendered DOM inspector, and search for
property="og:title",property="og:description", andproperty="og:image". - Confirm that the values describe the page you are sharing and that the image URL is absolute.
- Open the image URL in a new tab or use an unauthenticated request. It must be reachable without a login, expiring session, or private network.
- Check redirects, certificate errors, hotlink protection, and access rules that could stop a crawler from retrieving the image.
A minimal head section might look like this:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/share-card.jpg">Do not infer a universal required pixel size, file size, cache lifetime, or image format from a missing thumbnail. No such numerical threshold is established by the official material available here, and WhatsApp may handle a page differently from another preview service.
5. Separate an image failure from a complete preview failure
Text card, no thumbnail
If a title or description appears but the picture does not, first verify the og:image value in the delivered source and load that URL while logged out. A redirect to a login page, a blocked request, or an image that exists only after JavaScript runs can explain the missing picture. The page can still produce text metadata even when the image request fails.

Bare URL, no card at all
Check the sender’s privacy toggle and WhatsApp Web connectivity before editing the site. Then inspect whether the page supplies usable metadata. A bare URL does not prove that the image is the sole problem.
Preview appears inconsistently
Record the exact URL, including query parameters and redirects, and send it again after correcting the suspected cause. WhatsApp has not published a Web control that purges link-preview cache or a guaranteed way to force a previously generated card to refresh. A new send is a useful test, not a promise of immediate cache invalidation.
6. A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Identify scope: send a link from a domain that normally produces a card and compare it with the failing URL.
- Check the sender: verify Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Disable link previews is off on the account sending the test.
- Check the session: refresh WhatsApp Web, then clear its cache and cookies, sign out and in, and restart the browser if necessary.
- Check the network: test a hotspot and confirm that
web.whatsapp.comand.whatsapp.netare not blocked. - Check the browser: retry in an updated Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, or Safari session, preferably without extensions for the test.
- Check the page: for a one-domain failure, inspect the delivered Open Graph title, description, and image fields.
- Check the image: open the image URL without authentication and verify that redirects, permissions, and certificate settings do not block access.
- Send a new message: use the corrected URL and compare the result. Do not promise that an old message will change.

For site owners: make the page easier to preview
Publish accurate Open Graph title, description, and image values in the initial HTML response. Use a stable, publicly reachable image URL and test it outside your logged-in session. Check the final URL after redirects, because the page a visitor sees may not be the URL a preview fetcher receives. If a content-security, bot-protection, or authentication layer treats automated retrieval differently, coordinate with the site administrator; WhatsApp does not publish a complete list of its fetching behavior.

After deployment, share the exact canonical URL in a new WhatsApp message. Compare the result on Web and on a phone, and note whether the failure is limited to one account, one browser, or one domain. That record prevents a site metadata problem from being mistaken for a network problem.
