A security warning in a website thumbnail or link preview may come from the app or browser checking the destination URL—not from the system that creates the thumbnail. The warning is a reason to verify the link, but it does not by itself prove that the site is malicious. The cause depends on which app shows the message, its exact wording, and where the shared URL leads.
First, distinguish a security warning from a missing preview
A link preview and a safety check are separate features. A preview system may fetch a page to display its title, description, or image; a platform may independently check whether the URL could be unsafe. A warning in place of a preview therefore does not necessarily mean the preview generator failed or that the website is compromised.
- Safety warning: The browser or app flags a potentially unsafe URL or destination. Google Safe Browsing checks for threats including phishing and social engineering, malware, and unwanted software. Google Safe Browsing says Chrome and other browsers use the service to warn users before visiting a dangerous site or downloading a harmful app.
- Suspicious-link reminder: Some messaging apps flag a link that looks unusual. WhatsApp says its reminder can appear when a URL uses character combinations that could mislead people, such as a character resembling one in a legitimate domain. WhatsApp explains suspicious links.
- Preview disabled or unavailable: A link may simply appear without a thumbnail. WhatsApp, for example, documents a setting that disables link previews for links sent by the person who enables it. That setting is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every missing preview. WhatsApp explains how to disable link previews.
Do not assume a warning comes from Google Safe Browsing unless the app or message identifies it, or the platform’s documentation confirms that mechanism. Meta, for example, describes Messenger Safe Browsing as warning people about links to unsafe websites; the exact warning behavior depends on the product. Meta’s explanation of Messenger Safe Browsing was posted March 9, 2026.
Why a link can be flagged
The destination may be considered risky
Safety checks can concern the destination of a URL, not just the address initially pasted into a message. A link may redirect to a different domain or page, and Google says checking a redirected URL may be appropriate. Google’s Safe Browsing appropriate-use guidance also cautions against presenting a warning as proof that a page is unsafe: a warning should use qualifying language such as “potentially” or “possible.” False positives and false negatives can occur.

The URL may look like an imitation
Misspellings, unexpected punctuation, or characters that resemble letters from a familiar domain can make a link suspicious. A familiar-looking name is not enough to establish that the destination is genuine; inspect the actual hostname and any address reached after a redirect.
The preview may be turned off or unavailable
If there is no warning text and only the thumbnail is missing, investigate preview settings and the sharing app’s behavior separately. A disabled preview feature can explain some cases, but the available information may not establish why a particular app omitted a preview.

How to check the link safely
- Identify where the warning appears. Note the app or browser, and whether you see the warning in a chat, on a search result, or after opening the link.
- Record the exact wording. The named service and language can help distinguish a safety interstitial from a suspicious-link reminder or a connection warning.
- Inspect the displayed URL. Check the hostname for misspellings, unexpected subdomains, or unusual characters. If you are unsure where it goes, do not enter credentials or other sensitive information.
- Check the destination and redirects cautiously. A link may lead somewhere other than its visible text suggests. Google notes that redirected URLs may also be checked; verify the final domain through a trusted route rather than bypassing a warning.
- If there is no warning, check preview settings. Look for a link-preview option in the app and consider whether the sender has disabled previews. Do not treat a missing image alone as evidence of a security problem.
HTTPS by itself does not establish that a site’s content is safe. Nor does the warning described here establish that HTTPS is the cause.
If you own the website
Start with the exact domain and destination URL that triggered the warning. In the affected platform’s official site-status or webmaster tools, check whether that domain is listed or whether you have received a notification. Google identifies its Safe Browsing site-status diagnostic and webmaster notifications as resources for site owners. If you find signs of compromise, investigate and remediate the site, then use the platform’s review process where available. A warning alone is not proof that your site was compromised or blacklisted.

- Keep the exact shared URL, the warning text, the affected app, and any redirect destinations together while investigating.
- Check the page and redirects users actually reach, not only the homepage.
- Use the warning provider’s own status and review process; another platform’s classification may not explain it.
- Do not buy a certificate or a cleanup service solely because a thumbnail shows a warning. First establish what the warning names and whether the site has a confirmed issue.
