Open the live URL first, let it settle, and compare it in a private window or another browser. If the live page is normal, focus on capture timing, lazy loading, viewport choice, and browser-environment differences.
Start by separating a broken page from a bad capture
Load the URL normally and wait until the content you expect is visible. If the browser itself shows a white, empty, or partly rendered page, troubleshoot the site or browser before changing screenshot code. If the browser looks correct but the saved PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF is empty, the capture workflow is the likely problem.
When the live page is blank
- Reload once and check connectivity. A temporary network failure, DNS problem, or interrupted navigation can leave an empty document.
- Try a private or incognito window. A page that works there points to stored site data, an extension, or a browser setting.
- Disable extensions one at a time. Ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and appearance customizers can prevent the scripts or styles a page needs. Re-enable them after identifying the offender.
- Compare browsers. If only one browser fails, inspect its settings and graphics configuration. If one site fails in several browsers while other sites work, the site or its network dependencies may be at fault.
When only the screenshot is blank
Do not assume that a successful navigation event means the page is visually ready. Modern applications often fetch data and render components after the browser’s load event. A screenshot taken immediately after navigation can therefore contain only the initial background.
Browser checks that commonly restore a page
Clear site data without wiping everything
Use the browser’s site-information or privacy controls to remove data for the affected domain, then reload. This is safer than deleting all browsing data and helps reveal a stale cache, corrupted storage entry, or obsolete service-worker response.

Check JavaScript and tracking protection
Many application pages are unusable when JavaScript is blocked. In Firefox, verify that JavaScript has not been disabled by a preference or extension. Enhanced Tracking Protection can also block a script or endpoint a site needs; test the affected site with protection temporarily relaxed, then restore the setting if it is not the cause.
Inspect graphics-related settings
If the page is blank only in one browser or on one machine, modified graphics preferences, hardware acceleration, or a driver issue can matter. Compare a normal window with a private window and test another browser before changing advanced settings. Keep a record of any preference you alter so it can be reverted.
Make automated captures wait for real readiness
Use a condition tied to the content the image must contain rather than a generic delay alone. A selector for the finished dashboard, a heading containing the loaded report name, or an application-specific “ready” marker is more reliable than waiting an arbitrary number of milliseconds.

await browser.close();Replace the URL and selector with signals that exist on your page. If no ready marker is available, wait for a distinctive heading or content element. A fixed delay can be a fallback for an animation, but it should not be your only readiness test.
Bring lazy content into view
Images and sections marked for lazy loading may not request their resources until they approach the viewport. Scroll through the document before a full-page capture, or explicitly wait for the image elements to finish loading:

Wait for network activity carefully
“Network idle” can help on a page that performs a finite burst of requests, but analytics, advertisements, polling, and WebSockets may keep a page active indefinitely. Prefer a selector or application-ready signal, and use a bounded timeout so a failed dependency does not make the job hang forever.
Why a white flash can become a white image
Chrome Developers describes paint holding as the browser’s effort to avoid a flash of unpainted content during same-origin navigation: “This is the brief moment during which the browser shows a white paint while loading a page.” That transient state is normally replaced quickly. Automation can preserve it when the screenshot is taken at the wrong lifecycle point, before the first meaningful paint or after a navigation that has not yet completed its client-side rendering.

Canvas and cross-origin traps
A canvas containing remote images is a narrower case. If an image is drawn without the required cross-origin configuration, the canvas can become tainted. Reading its pixels then throws a browser SecurityError. This is a site-configuration issue, not a universal explanation for blank screenshots. The website owner must serve the resource with an appropriate CORS policy and load it with matching cross-origin settings. Check the browser console for the security error and test the asset directly.
Keep the rendering environment reproducible
Visual output can vary with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For screenshot tests, pin the browser version, use a consistent viewport and device scale factor, and run on the same type of host where possible. Record whether the job is headless. A baseline made on one environment can legitimately differ on another even when the page source is unchanged.
A practical diagnostic checklist
- Does the live page become correct after a normal reload?
- Does it work in a private window?
- Does disabling one extension change the result?
- Is JavaScript enabled and is site tracking protection interfering?
- Are you waiting for the actual content, not merely
load? - Does the required content appear only after scrolling?
- Are you requesting a viewport image when you need a full-page image?
- Does the console show a canvas security error or failed resource request?
- Are browser, OS, viewport, scale factor, and headless mode consistent with the visual baseline?

Should I use a longer delay instead of a selector?
A selector is usually more reliable because it represents the content you need. Use a delay only for known animation or transition behavior, and keep it bounded.
Why is a screenshot blank only in headless mode?
Headless mode is one of several environment factors that can change rendering. Compare browser version, viewport, graphics settings, and host conditions before changing application code.
Can a blank screenshot prove the website is down?
No. It may show an early capture, blocked script, viewport mismatch, lazy content, or a browser-specific failure. Verify the live page in another context first.
