When images fail in Chrome, first determine whether the problem affects one website or many. Then open the page in an Incognito window: images that work there usually point to an extension or profile-data problem, while failures everywhere suggest network, security software, memory, or Chrome itself. The sequence below moves from reversible checks to site-owner diagnostics.
Start by isolating the scope
- Reload and verify the address. Press Ctrl+R (Windows/Linux) or Command+R (macOS). Check that the image URL and page address are spelled correctly.
- Test another website. If images fail only on one domain, concentrate on that site’s permissions, cookies, and image server. If several unrelated sites fail, investigate the connection, firewall, antivirus, VPN, filtering software, and device resources.
- Look for the failure type. A broken-image icon, an empty image area, a blocked-content warning, or a page that never finishes loading can each indicate a different layer. Record the affected page and, later, the failed image URL and HTTP status.
Do not begin by changing system-wide settings. A one-site failure rarely needs a network reset, and a broad failure cannot be repaired by repeatedly clearing one site’s cookies.
Use Incognito as the fastest isolation test
Open ⋮ in Chrome and choose New Incognito window, or press Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+N (macOS). Visit the same page.
If images work in Incognito
Incognito disables extensions by default and uses a separate temporary session. The likely causes are an extension, corrupted cached data, cookies, or another setting in your normal profile.

- In a normal window, open ⋮ → Extensions → Manage extensions.
- Turn extensions off, reload the page, and check the images.
- Turn extensions back on one at a time, reloading after each change. Google’s Chrome guidance says: “If this solves your connection error or loading issue, re-enable your extensions one at a time to identify which extension is causing the problem.”
Pay particular attention to ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, antivirus browser add-ons, and extensions that rewrite page content or requests. Once you identify the offender, update it, change its permissions for the affected site, or remove it.
If images also fail in Incognito
The cause is less likely to be an extension or ordinary profile data. Continue with site permissions, then test your network and security software. A server-side failure remains possible when only one website is affected.
Repair cache, cookies, and site data
Stale cached files or damaged cookies can prevent a page from requesting its images correctly. Clearing everything signs you out of sites, so begin with the affected domain.
- Open the affected page.
- Click the controls icon to the left of the address bar, then choose Site settings (or open ⋮ → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → View permissions and data stored across sites).
- Find the domain and delete its stored data. Close and reopen the tab, sign in again if necessary, and reload.
If the problem persists, use ⋮ → Delete browsing data. Select a time range and include Cached images and files; include cookies and other site data only when you accept the sign-outs and saved-session changes. Chrome’s image troubleshooting flow places cache/cookie checks after private browsing and extension checks.

Check JavaScript and site permissions
Modern image galleries, lazy-loaded images, consent dialogs, and content embedded from another origin often depend on JavaScript and permitted cookies.
- On the affected page, open the controls icon → Site settings.
- Set JavaScript to Allow unless your organization intentionally blocks it.
- Review permissions for images, pop-ups and redirects, automatic downloads, and sound or other content the page explicitly needs.
- Under Third-party cookies, allow the site temporarily if images are delivered through an embedded service or content frame. Chrome documents that third-party-cookie restrictions can affect embedded content.
Reload after each meaningful change. If allowing a permission fixes the page, create the narrowest site exception rather than enabling it globally.
When images fail on many websites
Verify the connection
Open several unrelated sites. Restart the router or switch briefly to another network, such as a phone hotspot, if permitted. A hotspot test distinguishes a local network or DNS problem from a Chrome-specific problem.
Check security and filtering software
Firewall rules, antivirus web shields, VPNs, corporate proxies, DNS filters, and parental-control tools can block image CDNs or specific file types. Pause one control at a time only for a short diagnostic, then restore it. Ask an administrator before changing managed-device policies.

Check memory and competing processes
Many tabs, large web apps, and low available memory can leave images blank or cause tabs to reload. Close unnecessary tabs and applications, then retry. In Chrome, open ⋮ → More tools → Task manager to identify unusually heavy tabs or extensions.
Update and restart Chrome
Open ⋮ → Help → About Google Chrome. Install an available update and relaunch. If the issue began after a profile change, create a temporary Chrome profile to determine whether the original profile is damaged; do not delete the original until bookmarks and passwords are backed up.
Developer-console checks for site owners
User-side fixes cannot make an image load when the server, policy, or URL is wrong. Reproduce the problem, open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Command+Option+I (macOS), and inspect the failure.
Use the Network panel
- Choose Network, enable Preserve log, reload, and filter by Img.
- Open the failed request and record its exact URL, status code, redirect chain, response headers, and console message.
- Confirm the final response is successful and returns an image content type such as
image/png,image/jpeg, orimage/webp.
Check authentication requirements, hotlink protection, CDN permissions, expiring signed URLs, filename capitalization, and whether redirects still point to live assets. A 404, 403, expired URL, or HTML error page disguised as an image requires a server or deployment fix.

Fix mixed content
An HTTPS page requesting an HTTP image creates mixed content. Chrome may block or upgrade some image requests. MDN’s guidance is direct: “The best strategy to avoid issues with mixed content is to serve all the content as HTTPS:” Replace http:// image URLs with https:// or same-origin relative URLs, verify certificates and redirects, and remove hard-coded insecure references from templates, CSS, and JavaScript.
Fix Content Security Policy violations
Inspect the console message and the response’s Content-Security-Policy header. Review img-src and the inherited default-src directive. Add the legitimate image CDN or origin to the policy, or serve the asset from an allowed origin. upgrade-insecure-requests can upgrade resource requests to HTTPS, but it does not authorize an image origin that the policy otherwise forbids.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one site fails; Incognito also fails | Site server, URL, policy, or site permission | Check Site settings, then inspect the image request and status |
| Normal window fails; Incognito works | Extension, cache, cookie, or profile setting | Disable extensions, then clear that site’s data |
| Several sites fail in every window | Network, firewall, VPN, antivirus, memory, or Chrome | Test another network and review security software and resources |
| Console reports mixed content | Insecure HTTP asset on an HTTPS page | Serve the image and every redirect over HTTPS |
| Console reports CSP violation | Restrictive img-src or default-src |

If your goal is to obtain a clean image of a page for documentation or testing rather than diagnose Chrome itself, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including viewport and device presets, full-page and element capture, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDF controls, caching, signed links, webhooks, bulk capture, and usage reporting.

FAQ
Why do pictures work in another browser but not Chrome?
That points to Chrome-specific extensions, profile data, permissions, or security integration. Incognito and a clean temporary profile help separate those causes from the website or network.
Can clearing Chrome data repair a broken image hosted by a website?
No. It can remove stale local state, but a 404, 403, expired asset URL, mixed-content block, or CSP violation must be corrected by the site owner.
Should I disable all security software permanently?
No. Use a brief, authorized pause only as a diagnostic, restore protection immediately, and create a narrow exception only when the software and your administrator allow it.
