A missing icon can mean two different problems: Chrome cannot load the favicon for a tab or bookmark, or Google has not selected a favicon for an organic Search result. Start by identifying the surface, then inspect the HTML declaration, the exact image response, Content Security Policy, and any competing icon links. Google Search has additional crawler, format, size, hostname, and recrawl rules that do not control the icon in a Chrome tab.
First, identify where the icon is missing
| Surface | What to investigate | What the evidence means |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome tab or bookmark | The page’s served <link rel="icon">, the referenced response, CSP, and competing candidates |
A browser loading or selection problem |
| Google organic Search result | Google’s favicon eligibility, crawler access, image format and dimensions, hostname scope, stable URL, and recrawl processing | Search can omit an eligible icon; this does not prove the Chrome favicon is broken |
Check the tab or bookmark first. Only follow the Google-specific branch if the icon is absent beside your page in Search.
Fix a missing Chrome tab or bookmark icon
1. Inspect the HTML actually served
Open the affected page, choose View page source or inspect the document in DevTools, and search for rel="icon". A conventional declaration is:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">
Inspect the response delivered to Chrome rather than only a template, CMS setting, or framework source file. The link can use a relative or absolute URL. The historical rel="shortcut icon" form is also recognized by Google, but rel="icon" is the straightforward modern declaration.

2. Open the exact icon URL
Copy the final href and open it directly in a new tab. Confirm that it returns the intended image, not a 404 page, login screen, redirect loop, HTML error document, or an image from the wrong environment. In DevTools, use the Network panel, reload, and select the icon request to check its status, response headers, and preview.
- A 404, 403, 5xx response or redirect loop means the server or deployment is wrong.
- An HTML response with a successful status is still not a usable favicon.
- If the URL works only when signed in, anonymous visitors and crawlers cannot use it.
- Keep the URL and filename consistent across environments; update the HTML when the asset moves.
3. Check Content Security Policy
Read the page’s Content-Security-Policy response header, paying particular attention to img-src. A policy that excludes the favicon’s origin or path can block the request even when the URL is valid. Chrome DevTools documents CSP violations in its Issues panel. Open DevTools, select Issues, reload with the panel open, and review violations reported during page load. The panel is a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee that every favicon failure will appear there.
4. Review multiple icon declarations
Sites often publish several candidates for light and dark themes, devices, or formats. Browsers can use the media, type, and sizes attributes when choosing among them. Check that the candidate intended for the current viewport is valid and that its conditions are not accidentally excluding Chrome.

Temporarily reduce the page to one known-good declaration while diagnosing. Then add other candidates back one at a time. Ensure the declared type and dimensions match the file you serve.
5. Check deployment and access controls
- Verify the asset exists in the production build and is not present only in a local or staging directory.
- Check case sensitivity:
/Favicon.icoand/favicon.icodiffer on many servers. - Ensure authentication, IP restrictions, hotlink protection, or a web-application firewall does not reject the request.
- Serve a real image with an appropriate image content type and avoid rewriting the icon path to your application’s HTML shell.
There is no documented, universal Chrome favicon-cache clearing sequence or guaranteed refresh interval. If markup, the response, CSP, and candidate selection all pass but only Chrome’s UI remains stale, treat caching as version-sensitive rather than relying on a promised reset procedure. Verify the result in a fresh profile or another browser as a comparison, without assuming that this proves a particular cache command will fix it.
When the icon is missing only from Google Search
Google Search Central’s favicon guidance applies to organic Search results, not to Chrome’s tab rendering. Google states that “A favicon isn’t guaranteed to appear in Google Search results, even if all guidelines are met.”

Meet the Search requirements
- Declare the icon from the home page with a link element such as
<link rel="icon" href="/path/to/favicon.ico">. Google extracts therelandhrefvalues and acceptsiconand the historicalshortcut icon. - Use a square 1:1 image. Google specifies at least 8×8 pixels and recommends an image larger than 48×48 pixels for better appearance.
- Use one of Google’s supported formats: BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, or TIFF.
- Allow Googlebot to crawl the home page and Googlebot-Image to crawl the favicon resource. Do not block either through robots rules, authentication, or server policy.
- Keep the favicon URL stable. Changing it repeatedly creates additional processing work and can delay recognition.
- Google defines a Search site by hostname: a subdomain can have its own favicon, while a subdirectory cannot establish a separate Search favicon under that rule.
Google says recrawling and processing can take several days to several weeks, depending on when its systems decide to refresh the content. That is Search guidance, not a Chrome-tab cache interval. Even after a compliant crawl, display remains discretionary.
A practical diagnostic order
- Name the failing surface. Record whether the problem is a tab, bookmark, or Search result.
- Inspect served markup. Find the intended
rel="icon"link and its finalhref. - Fetch the resource. Confirm status, content, image format, and anonymous accessibility.
- Inspect CSP. Look for an
img-srcrule that excludes the icon. - Read DevTools Issues and Network. Reload while both panels are available to capture load-time diagnostics.
- Resolve competing links. Check
media, type, andsizes, then test one candidate. - Apply Search-only rules. Check crawler access, dimensions, format, hostname scope, stable URL, and processing time.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Default icon in every tab | No usable declaration or failed asset request | Inspect served HTML and open the exact href. |
| Works locally, fails in production | Missing build asset, wrong path or case, or production access control | Test the production URL anonymously and inspect the deployment output. |
| Network request is blocked | CSP, firewall, authentication, or hotlink protection | Read the response headers and DevTools Issues; permit the required resource. |
| Several icons are requested | Multiple candidates with conflicting attributes | Validate media, type, and sizes; simplify temporarily. |
| Tab icon is present but Search icon is absent | Search eligibility, crawl, hostname, processing, or Google’s non-guaranteed display | Follow the Search checklist and allow recrawl time. |

Not under Google’s hostname-based Search definition. A subdomain can have a separate favicon; a subdirectory cannot establish its own Search favicon.
Is an 8×8 image a good production choice?
