A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter works only if the particular USB-C port on your computer, tablet, or phone supports video output—usually DisplayPort Alt Mode for this adapter type. USB-C describes the connector, not a guarantee of video. Check the device’s documentation for the exact port before buying; a USB-C socket that lacks the required video mode will not produce a picture through the adapter.
Does every USB-C port support HDMI?
No. USB-C is a connector shape, and its ports can support different features. For a common USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, the source device generally sends DisplayPort video through USB-C using DisplayPort Alt Mode; the adapter converts that signal for an HDMI display. The adapter’s HDMI plug does not mean the source port natively outputs HDMI.
VESA explains that if a Type-C port does not support DisplayPort over USB-C, the display receives no video data and shows no image; connecting it this way does not harm the device. VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C FAQ describes this behavior.
What DisplayPort Alt Mode does
DisplayPort Alt Mode is a VESA standard for carrying DisplayPort over a USB Type-C connection. USB-C Alternate Modes repurpose connector pins and cable wires for another interface. Their discovery and enablement use the USB Power Delivery protocol, according to VESA. Depending on the device and configuration, DisplayPort, USB data, and power delivery can share the connection.

In the usual adapter setup, the source sends DisplayPort video over USB-C and a dongle or adapter cable converts it to HDMI. VESA also lists adapter options for DVI and VGA displays. HDMI Alt Mode is a separate implementation: HDMI Licensing Administrator describes it as a way for an HDMI-enabled source to connect directly to an HDMI display over USB-C without protocol or connector adapters. Manufacturers choose which HDMI features their products support, so the USB-C connector alone does not establish that HDMI Alt Mode is available. See HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI Alt Mode overview.
How to check whether your USB-C port supports video
- Find your exact device model. Use its manual or manufacturer specifications, and check the description for the specific USB-C port—not just the device family.
- Look for explicit video support. Search the specifications for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DisplayPort Alt Mode,” “USB-C video output,” or equivalent wording. VESA says device documentation should provide the relevant information.
- Check each USB-C port separately. A device with multiple USB-C ports may not give them identical capabilities. Microsoft advises connecting a DisplayPort Alt Mode adapter to a port that supports that mode. A DP logo near a connector can be a useful clue, but the model documentation is the stronger check.
- Verify the whole display chain. Check that the source, adapter, HDMI cable, and display support the resolution and refresh rate you want. A general standard capability does not guarantee a particular combination of products will support it.
Microsoft’s compatibility guidance is to make sure “the PC, the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes.” Read Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance alongside the specifications for your devices and accessories.

Choose the right type of adapter
| Option | Good fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C-to-HDMI plug adapter or dongle | Reusing an HDMI cable or carrying a compact adapter | The source port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the adapter supports your required resolution and refresh rate. |
| USB-C-to-HDMI adapter cable | A single cable run without a separate HDMI cable | Make the same source-port and display-mode checks; confirm the cable length and supported mode in its specifications. |
| USB-C dock with HDMI output | You also need other ports, charging, or multiple display connections | Confirm that the dock supports video and works with the exact host port. A USB hub alone does not establish video support. |
| Direct USB-C-to-display connection | Your display accepts USB-C video input | Confirm that the display’s USB-C input supports video and that the source supports the matching mode. |
VESA distinguishes a video-capable dock from a USB hub: a USB hub, as defined by USB-IF, does not itself support Alternate Modes such as DisplayPort Alt Mode. A dock may combine hub functions with video routing, so consult the dock’s documentation rather than assuming its USB-C connection carries a display signal. VESA also notes that a dongle can let you reuse an existing display cable. Its overview of adapters and docks is at DisplayPort over USB-C.
What resolution and refresh rate can the connection handle?
VESA’s overview describes a DisplayPort-over-USB-C configuration capable of 4K at 60 Hz and 24-bit color without compression while carrying USB 3.1. It also describes 5K (5120 × 2880) without compression with simultaneous USB 2.0. These are standard-level configurations, not promises for every computer, adapter, HDMI cable, or display. The HDMI output of a specific adapter may be the limiting component, so check the published specifications for every link in the chain.

- CHECK YOUR DEVICE FIRST( USB-C MALE TO HDMI FEMALE): This adapter works with USB Type C ports that support DP Alt Mode. Want to be sure before you buy? Check your device specs - not every USB-C port sends video.
- ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
- 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
- PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
- EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.
VESA’s 2020 announcement for DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 states up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video when all four high-speed lanes are used, or up to 40 Gbps with simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data. Those figures describe that specification, not every USB-C host or adapter. See VESA’s April 29, 2020 announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is your USB-C-to-HDMI adapter not working?
- Verify the exact source port. Confirm that it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. A USB-C port without the needed video support will not send DisplayPort video to the adapter.
- Connect the adapter directly to the source while troubleshooting. Microsoft lists an external hub or dock as a possible cause of a limited display connection.
- Check the display and physical connections. Select the HDMI input used by the adapter and make sure the adapter and HDMI cable are fully connected.
- Compare supported display modes. Check the source, adapter, cable, and display specifications for the same resolution and refresh rate. Microsoft also flags unsupported cable features as a possible cause of connection trouble.
- Test a dock separately. If a direct connection works but the dock does not, check the dock’s documentation for video support and compatibility with your host device. A basic USB hub is not a substitute for a video-capable dock.
If the source port lacks DisplayPort video output, replacing the HDMI cable will not add it. Choose a connection method that the device actually supports, or use a different source port that is documented for video output.
