Industry estimates reported in September 2026 put a 32-inch HD TV’s video-and-audio processing board at nearly half of its component cost by Q3 2026. That does not mean the processor chip alone costs more than the screen, or that every TV is affected: the board includes memory and several other chips.
What the reported cost crossover means
The comparison is between a TV’s mainboard and its LCD panel, not between a processor chip and a panel. The mainboard handles video and audio processing and carries components such as DRAM, NAND flash, the main processor, display-driver ICs and power-management ICs. It may also include a Wi-Fi module in the quoted board-price example.
Electronic Times reported Omdia estimates on September 23, 2026, that the processing board’s share of component costs for a 32-inch HD TV rose from just over 10% in Q2 2025 to the high-40% range in Q3 2026. The reported examples of exposure also include 40–43-inch Full HD LCD models. These figures concern particular configurations and cost measures; they do not establish a universal crossover across TV models.

The estimates below were attributed to Omdia by Electronic Times in 2026. They are industry-reported figures, not independently audited component invoices.

The late-2026 figures were also covered by TechRadar through DigiTimes, whose September 30 report summary is accessible while the full article is subscription-restricted. Treat precise figures as reported estimates rather than independently verified market-wide prices.
Why AI demand can affect the cost of a TV
AI infrastructure uses large quantities of memory, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and server demand can compete with consumer electronics for constrained memory supply. TrendForce’s January 2026 analysis linked competing HBM and server demand to tighter TV-memory supply. That pressure affects more than a TV’s processor: DRAM and NAND flash are part of the board, alongside other semiconductor components.

Memory is not the only cost pressure. TrendForce said display panels accounted for about 40–50% of overall TV manufacturing cost and also pointed to rising panel and precious-metal costs. It projected DRAM’s share of TV bill-of-materials cost would rise from 2.5–3% to 6–7%. That is a whole-TV cost measure, distinct from the processing-board share reported for the 32-inch example.
Which TVs are most exposed?
The clearest reported exposure is among smaller, lower-priced LCD sets, including 32-inch HD and 40–43-inch Full HD models. Their manufacturers have less room to absorb a sharp rise in board costs, according to Electronic Times. The reporting does not provide a complete ranking by model, nor does it establish the same cost pattern for premium display classes or every size and resolution.

- More directly implicated: smaller LCD TVs in the cited HD and Full HD categories.
- Not established: that all LCD TVs, OLED sets or larger televisions have a board that costs more than the panel.
- Important distinction: a component-cost estimate is not the same as a manufacturer’s total production cost or a store’s retail price.
Will this make TVs more expensive?
Higher manufacturing costs make retail price increases more likely, TrendForce said, and smaller, lower-priced sets may be particularly difficult for manufacturers to shield from cost rises. But the reports do not quantify a one-for-one pass-through to shoppers or prove that all brands will raise prices. Retail prices also depend on other costs and commercial decisions, so a reported board-price increase should not be read as a prediction of a specific TV price change.
TrendForce projected 194.81 million global TV shipments in 2026, down 0.6% year over year. That number is a forecast made in January 2026, not a final shipment result.

How to interpret headlines about “TV processors”
When a report says TV chips have overtaken panels in cost, check what “chips” or “board” refers to. In the cited 55-inch comparison, the $118.20 figure is for a mainboard containing memory and a Wi-Fi module as well as processing and other electronics; the cited panel values are $116 at the low end and $123 on average. The comparison is meaningful as a board-versus-panel example, but it does not show that a single processor chip costs more than an entire screen.
