Thunderstorms can knock out power and internet through related but separate failures. Wind and falling trees can damage local power lines, while lightning can disrupt transformers or substations. Internet service may then fail because home equipment has lost power, provider equipment has lost power, or storm damage has cut communications links. That is why electricity and internet do not always return at the same time.

How a thunderstorm interrupts electricity

Wind and falling trees damage local lines

Strong straight-line winds can topple trees and power lines, while falling limbs can strike poles and local distribution lines. The Congressional Research Service notes that trees and limbs damaging local distribution infrastructure account for most weather-related power outages; that finding covers weather broadly, not thunderstorms alone. NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory describes the same wind-and-tree pathway for thunderstorms. (CRS; NOAA NSSL)

Lightning can disrupt equipment miles away

A lightning strike does not have to hit a house to interrupt its electricity. It can damage a pole-mounted transformer or a substation, disrupting delivery to customers some distance from the strike. The National Weather Service also identifies lines crossing, shorting out, or breaking as ways high winds and lightning can affect power. Its cited safety guidance is written for Arizona’s monsoon season, so its mechanisms are useful here, but its regional storm context should not be read as a national statistic. (National Weather Service)

Local distribution and transmission failures are different

Local distribution lines carry electricity to neighborhoods; transmission lines move bulk power over longer distances. A tree on a neighborhood line can leave nearby customers without service, while damage to transmission infrastructure can affect a broader part of the system. The scale and duration depend on the damage: CRS says weather-related outages may last from hours to several days, a broad range rather than a thunderstorm-specific average or a prediction for an individual outage. Why an internet outage can happen with or without a power outage

Your modem or router may simply be unpowered

Home internet equipment needs electricity. If the modem or router loses power, Wi-Fi can stop even when the provider’s network is still operating. A Wi-Fi connection disappearing therefore does not, on its own, establish that the provider has an outage.

Provider equipment also depends on power

Communications networks rely on powered facilities and equipment. A storm-related commercial-power interruption can affect network components beyond the home, as can physical damage to those components. FCC materials identify both power disruption and physical damage as communications-network vulnerabilities. (FCC emergency information; FCC storm-related public notice)

Storm damage can cut communications links

Storms may damage communications facilities or backhaul—the links that connect parts of a provider’s network. An FCC review of Hurricane Michael described damage to wireless-provider infrastructure and backhaul. That hurricane example illustrates a possible infrastructure failure path; it does not measure how often thunderstorms cause such damage. (FCC Hurricane Michael review)

Why internet may stay down after power returns

Restoring electricity to a home does not prove that provider-side equipment or a damaged network link is back in service. Those are separate restoration tasks, and their order and timing depend on the incident. The FCC’s materials establish that communications networks can be affected by power loss and physical damage, but they do not provide a universal recovery timeline for thunderstorm outages. What to check when power and internet do not match

  • Power is out and Wi-Fi is gone: The modem or router may be off because it has no electricity. That alone cannot tell you whether the provider’s network is available.
  • Power is on, but internet is unavailable: The fault could be in home equipment, provider facilities, or a communications link. Check the provider’s outage information or contact support rather than assuming the cause is local.
  • Power returned, but internet did not: Provider equipment or backhaul may still be affected even though service to your home has been restored.

These are diagnostic possibilities, not a way to identify the fault with certainty from symptoms alone.

How to receive storm alerts if communications are disrupted

NOAA lightning-safety guidance identifies a portable NOAA Weather Radio as one way to receive updates. It can help with alerts when other communications are unavailable, but it does not prevent storm damage, restore internet, or guarantee that communication will remain available.
