CD PROJEKT RED describes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as an open-world, single-player role-playing game in which monster hunter Geralt travels through the war-torn Northern Kingdoms in search of his adopted daughter, Ciri. It was released in 2015, but the publisher continues to support the game and has announced new editions and content.

Those facts help explain why the game remains visible to prospective players: a long-running title can keep reaching new audiences while existing fans have reasons to revisit it. These are publisher-reported copies sold over the game’s lifetime; they are not concurrent-player numbers, monthly active users, or a count of people currently returning to the game.

In the May 2025 announcement, CD PROJEKT Joint CEO Adam Badowski said: “I am proud to announce that since its release The Witcher 3 has sold over 60 million copies, securing a place among the bestselling video games in all history, and motivating us to carry on with intensive work on the next trilogy set in this universe.” The statement links the sales milestone to the company’s broader plans, but it does not measure individual players’ reasons for buying or replaying the game.
How new editions and planned content renew attention
Remastered edition
CD PROJEKT announced a remastered edition for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, covering the base game and its first two expansions. The announcement gave September 29, 2026 as the launch date, which has passed. Check the current platform store or publisher information for availability, edition contents, and any upgrade eligibility or terms; the announcement alone does not establish those live details. Songs of the Past
The publisher has announced Songs of the Past, an expansion planned for 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. CD PROJEKT RED’s support information says the expansion and related updates will not be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. What to check before choosing a version
If you are deciding whether to play or return, match the edition to your platform and the content you want. The remaster announcement names four platforms and says the package modernizes the base game and its first two expansions; it does not, by itself, answer every question about current upgrade eligibility or store listings.

So, why do people keep coming back?
The strongest substantiated answer is that The Witcher 3 has reached an exceptionally large audience and has not disappeared from its publisher’s plans. CD PROJEKT has described ongoing lifecycle support, and its 2025 results identified continuing sales of the game among the group’s main revenue drivers. A remastered edition and a planned expansion create fresh reasons for it to appear in conversations and for interested players to consider it.
Whether its world, story, characters, or choices will make it worth playing for you is a personal judgment—not something the sales record can prove. The record does show that interest has endured well beyond the game’s 2015 launch.
