There is no proven, universal winner between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 in The Witcher 3. Some players report higher frame rates with DX11, but the result can depend on the game build, CPU and GPU, scene, resolution, graphics settings, and features such as ray tracing and upscaling. CD PROJEKT RED says expected frame rates vary with system configuration and scene; its published expectations are not a controlled, feature-matched DX11-versus-DX12 benchmark.

There is also an important version caveat: CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for September 29, 2026, and says the next update will run exclusively with DirectX 12. Check your installed version and launcher before looking for a DX11 option.

Why can DX11 be faster on one PC?

A faster result on one computer does not establish that DX11 is inherently faster. The available official material does not identify one definitive technical cause for the DX12 performance gap reported by some players. The result may vary with the PC, game version, scene, and settings, so reports from different systems are not directly comparable.

In particular, the same API comparison can change if one test uses ray tracing or different upscaling, resolution, or graphics settings. CD PROJEKT RED’s published frame-rate expectations vary by configuration, settings, resolution, and scene. Its expectations for ray tracing and path tracing use automatic upscaling, and path tracing also uses frame generation, so those figures are not native-resolution, feature-matched API tests. First check which version you have

Advice about choosing DX11 only applies if your installed build actually offers it. CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered as available on September 29, 2026. Its support page says the next update will run exclusively with DirectX 12: “The game will run exclusively with DirectX 12, which will allow us to more effectively support ongoing technical improvements and modern hardware.” The announcement does not establish the rollout status for every PC storefront or installation, so check your launcher and installed version. Remastered announcement · Upcoming update requirements and support notice

The same support page lists an announced minimum of a 70 GB SSD, 6 GB VRAM, 12 GB RAM, and a Ryzen 5 2600 or Core i5-8400 with a GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB. CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD improves loading and asset streaming; it does not say that one fixes an API-related frame-rate deficit. These are announced requirements for the next update, not upgrade advice for every current installation. Requirements notice

What the official record does—and does not—show

A historical DX11 crash report is hardware-specific

Patch 4.03’s PC notes recorded a DX11 crash on launch or after loading a save on certain AMD GPUs. That establishes that a DX11 problem occurred for particular hardware and a particular patch; it does not mean all AMD GPUs, or all DX11 builds, are affected. The same notes added Intel Xe Super Sampling and listed improvements to ray-traced global illumination and reflections. Those patch-specific changes do not establish a general performance advantage for either API. Patch 4.03 PC notes

Older graphics guidance is not a current API benchmark

NVIDIA’s 2015 guide describes REDengine 3’s DirectX 11-era rendering features and gives historical examples of optional settings affecting performance. For instance, NVIDIA reported a HairWorks cost of 15–20 frames per second in action sequences with multiple HairWorks-enhanced actors; the guide also says Patch 1.03 had already improved HairWorks rendering performance. This is a vendor-published result from specific historical scenarios, not a measurement of current Remastered performance or a DX11-versus-DX12 comparison. NVIDIA’s 2015 graphics guide

Player reports are useful clues, not a universal ranking

Players have asked why the DirectX 12 version produces considerably fewer frames than the DirectX 11 version, and what is wrong with DX12 in the game. Such reports describe individual experiences. Without matching hardware, version, scene, and settings, they cannot show that DX12 is slower for everyone. Community reports

How to compare the APIs fairly, if both are available

Use the same conditions for each run. CD PROJEKT RED specifically notes that scene, hardware configuration, settings, and resolution affect expected results. This procedure helps separate an API difference from a settings or scene difference; it is not a claim that one API will win.

  1. Record the build and launch method. Note the exact game version and the executable or launcher option used for each API.
  2. Match the settings. Keep resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, and optional effects the same wherever the build allows it.
  3. Repeat the same route. Use the same save or route, and include both a dense area and an outdoor area. A city result from one PC should not be compared with a countryside result from another.
  4. Measure more than peak FPS. Record average frame rate and stutter or frame-time consistency, then repeat the route. A smoother experience may matter more than a higher brief peak.
  5. Troubleshoot a crash by build and hardware. Check the exact patch notes and GPU driver support for your hardware before concluding that an API is inherently broken.

If the installed update offers DX12 only, there is no DX11 option to compare in that build. If you do have both choices, state the version, hardware, scene, resolution, graphics features, upscaling or frame generation, average FPS, stutter, and any crashes when sharing results; otherwise the comparison may not explain what another player will see.
