If HiLight is not lighting up on your Pixel 11 Pro, first check its master switch and the setting for the specific activity you expect. Favorite-contact call alerts have additional requirements, and Google says flash notifications prevent HiLight from appearing for incoming calls. The checks below separate those cases from a broader software issue.
What HiLight should do
Google lists HiLight for Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. It can show light cues while you speak with Gemini and glow for incoming calls from favorite contacts using Phone by Google or WhatsApp. Google describes it as a way to get color-coded notifications without looking at the screen. Google’s HiLight instructions explain setup and behavior.
Check the settings for the cue that is missing
- Open Settings > System > HiLight.
- Make sure Use HiLight is on.
- Turn on the relevant activity setting: Speaking with Gemini for Gemini cues, or Calls from favorites for eligible calls.
These options are activity-specific: enabling HiLight generally does not by itself confirm that the particular cue you expect is enabled.
If calls from a favorite are not lighting up
Confirm the caller and calling app
- Check that the caller is configured as a favorite in Contacts.
- Update the Contacts app to its latest version.
- Test with Phone by Google or WhatsApp. Google documents these apps for favorite-contact call alerts; a call through another app is not established as supported.
Check flash notifications
Google says flash notifications suppress HiLight for incoming calls. If flash notifications are enabled, that explains a missing call cue; Google’s note does not say that this conflict suppresses Gemini cues.

Review the active Mode
HiLight glows by default when Flip to Shhh, Bedtime, or Do Not Disturb is enabled. If you changed a mode’s call behavior, open Settings > Modes, choose the mode, then select People > Calls. Google says choosing None disables HiLight in that mode and also turns off ring or vibration call notifications while it is active. Consider that trade-off before changing it.
If settings look right, try general Pixel software checks
Google’s general Pixel troubleshooting recommends these steps. They are not published as HiLight-specific diagnostics, so use them to check for a broader software or app issue rather than as a guaranteed repair.

- Restart the phone.
- Update apps from the Play Store.
- Check Settings > System > System update and install an available update.
- Start the phone in Safe Mode and see whether HiLight behaves differently. If it works there, a downloaded app may be involved; use Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance to identify the next step.

If the right HiLight options are enabled, the call prerequisites and mode settings are correct, and general software checks do not help, contact Google Pixel support for device-specific assessment or repair guidance. Google’s HiLight instructions do not provide a hardware self-test, a component replacement procedure, or a specific firmware fix for a persistently dark light. Do not open the phone or attempt a component replacement based on this guidance.
