No general aldehyde-to-benzene conversion was achieved in this study. Monika M. Lindner and co-workers designed a route that was intended to replace an aldehyde formyl group with an arene framework, but the decisive photochemical step followed a different course. Irradiating the intermediate fulvene produced a substituted spiro[2.4]heptadiene, a molecule containing a cyclopropane ring, rather than the planned bicyclic precursor to a Dewar benzene and then an arene.

The result is not a failed experiment in the broad sense. It leaves the proposed formyl-to-phenyl transformation unresolved while revealing a previously useful way to reach substituted spiro[2.4]heptadienes through photochemical rearrangement.

What the researchers were trying to do

An aldehyde contains a carbonyl carbon bearing a hydrogen atom. Lindner’s team set out to use that carbonyl-containing functional group as the starting point for building an aromatic, phenyl-like framework. The intended outcome was therefore much more ambitious than a routine functional-group interconversion: the route was designed to turn an aldehyde-derived unit into an arene skeleton.

The authors did not report a one-step reaction in which an aldehyde was simply exposed to a reagent and became benzene. Their proposal was a sequence of isolable or mechanistically defined stages. First, the aldehyde would be converted into a fulvene. Light would then trigger a ring-forming event, platinum(II) chloride would promote a rearrangement, and the resulting Dewar benzene derivative would isomerize to the thermodynamically more familiar arene structure.

Building the fulvene

The opening operation was a Knoevenagel-type condensation between an aldehyde and 1,3-cyclopentadiene. In this design, the aldehyde supplied the exocyclic carbon fragment while the cyclopentadiene component supplied the five-membered ring that becomes the core of a fulvene. The published synthesis used 10 mol% pyrrolidine as an organocatalyst.

A fulvene has a cyclopentadiene ring bearing an exocyclic carbon–carbon double bond. That unusual arrangement makes it a useful platform for rearrangements: the exocyclic double bond can participate in photochemical processes, while substituents next to it can determine which hydrogen shifts and ring closures are possible.

The calculated route

Computational studies supported the plausibility of the proposed sequence. In the calculated picture, light would generate a bicyclic intermediate from the fulvene. Platinum(II) chloride would then promote rearrangement to a Dewar benzene derivative, a strained valence isomer of an aromatic benzene ring. A subsequent isomerization would convert that Dewar structure into the targeted arene.

Those calculations were a mechanistic rationale, not experimental proof that the complete sequence would run. The distinction became decisive when the fulvene was irradiated.

What actually happened under irradiation

The key experiment

Chemistry World reports that the team irradiated the fulvene with mercury-vapor ultraviolet lamps for 16 hours. Instead of observing the planned bicyclic intermediate, the experiment gave a spiro[2.4]heptadiene. The primary paper describes this as an unexpected isomerization of the fulvene.

“Spiro” describes two rings that share one atom. In a spiro[2.4]heptadiene, one ring contains two atoms besides the shared spiro center and the other contains four; the total ring-size notation identifies the two rings, while “heptadiene” indicates the seven-carbon framework and two carbon–carbon double bonds. The critical structural feature for this study is the newly formed three-membered cyclopropane ring.

How the product was identified mechanistically

The researchers used deuterium labeling at the alpha position—the carbon next to the fulvene’s exocyclic double bond—to track hydrogen movement. The labeling pattern supported a 1,2-hydrogen shift: a hydrogen (or its deuterium label) moves from one adjacent carbon to the next as the system reorganizes. That shift is coupled to formation of the cyclopropane ring, accounting for the spiro[2.4]heptadiene skeleton.

This evidence matters because it distinguishes the observed reaction from the calculated route. The experiment did not merely stop before the platinum-promoted step; the fulvene had already followed a different photochemical pathway that changed its connectivity.

Why the proposed aldehyde-to-arene mechanism failed in practice

Competing photochemistry outpaced the designed sequence

The calculations established that the intended pathway was chemically plausible, but plausibility does not determine which excited-state reaction is fastest in an actual flask. Ultraviolet excitation can open several reaction channels. In this case, the fulvene underwent a rearrangement involving a 1,2-hydrogen shift and cyclopropane formation rather than producing the bicyclic intermediate required for the Dewar benzene step.

Once the spiro[2.4]heptadiene was formed, the atoms were connected in a way that no longer represented the planned precursor to the platinum(II)-chloride-promoted rearrangement. The failure was therefore located at the photochemical branching point, before the proposed Dewar benzene and arene-forming stages could be tested experimentally.

The substituent requirement identified by the authors

Lindner and co-workers concluded that a tertiary substituent alpha to the exocyclic double bond is needed for the 1,2-hydrogen-shift pathway. A tertiary center has the required carbon framework and hydrogen arrangement to support this rearrangement while stabilizing the developing connectivity changes. The conclusion is a mechanistic boundary for the unexpected reaction, not a claim that every fulvene will behave identically.

The authors’ examples included tertiary n-alkyl groups, cyclic and macrocyclic substituents, and other differently substituted tertiary-carbon groups. These examples show that the spiro-forming process is not restricted to one narrowly tailored substrate.

What products were obtained beyond the first example

After observing the initial rearrangement, the team prepared six additional substituted examples. The resulting series demonstrated that the photochemical process could deliver multiple substituted spiro[2.4]heptadienes across several tertiary-substituent classes.

Substituent class examined What the study establishes What it does not establish
Tertiary n-alkyl groups The 1,2-hydrogen-shift/cyclopropane-forming reaction operated for examples in this class. It does not provide a universal yield or rate for all tertiary alkyl substrates.
Cyclic tertiary groups Ring-containing tertiary substituents were represented in the expanded set. The available data does not give a single performance value that can be generalized to every ring size.
Macrocyclic tertiary groups A macrocyclic example shows that a larger, conformationally constrained substituent can participate. It does not prove that macrocycle size or flexibility has no effect on the reaction.
Other substituted tertiary-carbon groups Different tertiary-carbon environments still gave access to substituted spiro products. The paper does not support treating all tertiary substitution patterns as equivalent.

The reviewed sources do not provide one concise headline yield or rate for the overall series. It is therefore more accurate to describe the work as establishing a reaction mode and substrate examples than to attach an unsupported efficiency number to it.

Does this count as turning an aldehyde into benzene?

No—not as an experimentally demonstrated transformation in this report. The aldehyde was used to design and prepare a fulvene precursor, but the reported irradiation product was a spiro[2.4]heptadiene. The downstream Dewar benzene and arene-forming operations remained part of the proposed route rather than a completed, isolated aldehyde-to-benzene synthesis.

This distinction is especially important in chemistry, where a computationally supported mechanism, an observed intermediate, and an isolated final product represent different levels of evidence. The calculations addressed whether the intended sequence could be plausible. The laboratory experiment showed that the fulvene can instead isomerize through a hydrogen-shift pathway. Neither result demonstrates a general conversion of aldehydes into benzene derivatives.

How to compare this strategy with other aldehyde-to-arene ideas

A useful comparison should separate the chemical objective from the actual evidence. Five questions expose the main differences between this proposal and a demonstrated aldehyde-to-arene reaction:

  1. Is the aldehyde carbon retained? Some strategies preserve the carbonyl carbon in the product skeleton; others remove it or use it only as a temporary handle. The Lindner design starts from an aldehyde-derived fulvene, but the available data does not establish the carbon-retention outcome in a final arene because that product was not obtained.
  2. How many intermediates are isolated? A route can involve a prepared fulvene, a photochemical intermediate, a Dewar benzene derivative, and an arene, yet still fail if one stage diverts. The reported work experimentally supports the fulvene-to-spiro rearrangement, not the complete chain.
  3. What supplies the activation? Here, ultraviolet irradiation is the trigger for the unexpected rearrangement, while platinum(II) chloride was proposed for a later rearrangement. That combination differs fundamentally from a purely thermal or transition-metal-catalyzed aldehyde conversion.
  4. How broad is the demonstrated scope? The observed photoreaction tolerated several tertiary substituent classes and six additional examples. That scope belongs to spiro[2.4]heptadiene formation, not to aldehyde-to-arene conversion.
  5. Is the arene product actually isolated? For this study, the answer is no. The arene was the target of the design, while the experimentally established product class was substituted spiro[2.4]heptadienes.

What the unexpected product teaches about photochemical design

Photochemical synthesis often exposes reaction channels that are difficult to anticipate from ground-state structures alone. A fulvene’s conjugated system can absorb light and access excited-state geometries in which bond formation, electrocyclic rearrangement, and hydrogen transfer compete. The Lindner study shows why a calculated pathway should be treated as one branch of a reaction network rather than as a guaranteed itinerary.

The deuterium experiment is a practical lesson in mechanistic work. A proposed hydrogen shift can be tested by placing an isotope at the position expected to move and then examining where that label appears in the product. In this case, the labeling result supported the 1,2 shift tied to cyclopropane formation, giving a structural explanation for the spiro product rather than relying only on analogy or computation.

The tertiary-substituent requirement also provides a design rule for future experiments. Substrates lacking the necessary tertiary arrangement should not automatically be expected to follow the same pathway, while substrates that possess it may be useful starting points for deliberately making spiro[2.4]heptadienes.

What remains unresolved

The central open question is whether the original formyl-to-phenyl sequence can be realized under different conditions. Possible variables include the fulvene substitution pattern, the wavelength and intensity of irradiation, the order in which photochemical and platinum-mediated steps are attempted, and conditions that suppress the 1,2-hydrogen-shift channel. The reported study does not answer those follow-up questions, so they should not be presented as established solutions.

What is established is narrower and chemically valuable: the designed fulvene can undergo an unanticipated photoisomerization, the rearrangement proceeds through a 1,2-hydrogen shift supported by isotope labeling, and the reaction provides access to a range of substituted spiro[2.4]heptadienes.

The most accurate one-sentence account is therefore: an attempted aldehyde-to-arene strategy uncovered a mercury-UV-induced fulvene-to-spiro[2.4]heptadiene rearrangement, leaving the proposed aldehyde-to-benzene conversion experimentally unresolved.
