TDK announced on December 19, 2016, that its group company Micronas would be renamed TDK-Micronas. The stated purpose was to make the company’s connection to parent TDK clearer while retaining the Micronas name, which TDK said was well recognized in automotive markets.
What changed, and when?
The announced name change was from “Micronas” to “TDK-Micronas.” It followed TDK’s acquisition of Micronas, which TDK said was completed in March 2016. The renaming announcement came on December 19, 2016; it was a naming decision after the acquisition, not the acquisition itself. TDK’s December 19, 2016 announcement describes the sequence.
Why did TDK retain the Micronas name?
TDK said the new name would reinforce the company’s affiliation with its parent while preserving Micronas’s established identity. Matthias Bopp, then CEO of TDK-Micronas, explained the marketing rationale: “From a marketing point of view, it is particularly important to retain the product trade name as the company has established a high level of recognition on the Automotive market over many years”.
In the same announcement, TDK characterized Micronas as its magnetic sensor competence center, contributing sensing and control expertise in automotive and industrial markets. It described the business as a supplier of Hall-effect sensors and embedded motor controllers. These are descriptions from the 2016 announcement, not confirmation of a current product catalogue or an independent assessment of market position.
