Ryujinx says emulation is CPU-bottlenecked in most cases, so lowering resolution often will not fix low frame rates. Start by updating the emulator and graphics drivers, use Vulkan with AMD or Intel graphics when available, and distinguish brief shader-compilation stutters from persistently low performance.
Why Switch emulation is demanding
A Nintendo Switch game is designed for the Switch’s hardware, not the Steam Deck’s. The emulator reproduces the console’s behavior and translates its ARM instructions into code the Deck’s x86 processor can run. Ryujinx describes this translation process and says its CPU emulator supports much of ARMv8. That extra work is why the processor, rather than the graphics chip, is often the limiting component. Ryubing’s CPU and graphics documentation and its setup guide describe the translation and troubleshooting behavior.
The symptom matters. A game that stays slow is different from one that runs acceptably but briefly hitches when a new visual effect appears. The latter can be shader compilation; the former may be limited by CPU workload, the game, or its configuration.
What to try first
- Update the emulator and graphics drivers. Ryujinx’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking both when a game runs slowly. This is a sensible first step, but it cannot guarantee that a demanding title will run at full speed. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide
- Choose Vulkan for AMD or Intel graphics, if the option is available. Ryujinx recommends Vulkan rather than OpenGL for AMD and Intel graphics. Check the graphics settings in the build you are using; a backend change is not a promise of better performance in every game. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide
- Let shader caches build through normal play. Shader caching is enabled by default in Ryujinx. After a shader has been compiled and cached, later encounters can require less work, but its first appearance may still hitch. Caching primarily reduces repeated compilation stutter; it does not guarantee a higher sustained frame rate. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide
- Lower resolution only as a GPU-load test. Try a lower rendered resolution if the graphics chip appears to be the limit. Ryujinx says the GPU bottleneck is less common than the CPU bottleneck, so resolution reduction is not a dependable fix for CPU-limited emulation. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide
- Leave other settings at their defaults unless there is a specific reason to change them. Ryujinx’s setup guide describes the emulator as pre-optimized and advises against changing settings it does not cover unless staff directs the user to do so. Avoid applying generic TDP, GPU-clock, CPU-thread, or power-tool values as guaranteed fixes; the documentation reviewed does not establish universal game-specific settings. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide
- Check the particular game and configuration. EmuDeck documents selecting Ryujinx or Yuzu per game, but that documentation does not establish one emulator as universally faster on Steam Deck. A meaningful comparison needs to identify the game, emulator build, game version, settings, and observed behavior. EmuDeck’s Ryujinx on SteamOS documentation
Tell shader stutter apart from a low frame rate
A shader describes graphics work such as how an effect is drawn. When the emulator first encounters a shader, it may need to compile it for the host graphics system. The result can be a temporary hitch or FPS drop at that moment. A shader cache can help when the same shader is encountered again, but it cannot retroactively remove the first compilation pause.

Ryujinx’s FAQ says asynchronous shader compilation can introduce graphical glitches and does not eliminate stutter; the project documentation also says the main project does not plan to implement it, although outside contributions may be reviewed. Understand which caches affect load time
Ryujinx also enables Profiled Persistent Translation Cache (PPTC) by default. It caches translated functions to reduce game load time; according to the setup guide, its benefit becomes available from the third launch after the game has reached the title screen at least twice. That is a launch-time improvement, not evidence that gameplay frame rate will rise. Ryujinx Setup & Configuration Guide

Be cautious with frame-rate mods
Many Switch games tie physics and game speed to frame rate. Ryujinx warns that increasing the frame rate can make the game itself run faster, while a static high-FPS mod may produce slow motion if the hardware cannot sustain its target. Do not treat an uncapping mod as a general performance fix; its result depends on the game, mod version, and the Deck’s ability to maintain the target. Ryujinx FAQ & Troubleshooting
What Steam Deck setup details do—and do not—tell you
EmuDeck documents Switch ROMs in Emulation/roms/switch, with the Emulation directory on either the Deck’s internal SSD or an SD card. Its Ryujinx instructions also cover the emulator’s keys directory and installing firmware through the emulator interface. These are setup details, not evidence that moving a game to an SD card or buying more storage will improve emulation speed. EmuDeck’s Ryujinx on SteamOS documentation

EmuDeck documents updating Ryujinx through EmuDeck or the application’s update mechanisms and choosing an emulator per game. Emulator availability and maintenance can change, so use current project and package sources when checking what is available rather than assuming a particular build or fork will remain current. The available documentation does not provide comparable, current Steam Deck benchmarks that identify a universal winner between Ryujinx and Yuzu.

- Note whether performance is consistently low or drops mainly when new effects appear; those patterns point to different issues.
- Confirm which emulator, build, game version, graphics backend, and settings are in use before comparing advice for the same title.
- Do not assume a lower resolution will help if the CPU is the limit, or that a cache will fix sustained low performance.
Valve’s troubleshooting search result recommends installing available system updates and restarting the Deck when addressing instability, and says its guide applies to LCD and OLED models. Consult Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide for current instructions; this is a general stability check, not a Switch-emulation-specific speed fix.
Quick Recap

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
