Stolen Device Protection can stop a thief who knows your iPhone passcode from using that passcode alone to open saved passwords. When its protections apply, Apple requires Face ID or Touch ID for access to stored passwords, with no passcode fallback. It is an added safeguard for a defined set of actions—not a guarantee against every password or account risk.
How it protects saved passwords
An iPhone passcode can be exposed or observed during a theft. Stolen Device Protection addresses that risk by requiring a biometric check for certain sensitive actions. Apple says access to stored passwords and credit cards requires Face ID or Touch ID, with no passcode alternative or fallback. In other words, knowing the device passcode alone is not enough to complete that protected action when the feature’s conditions apply.
Apple describes the requirement in About Stolen Device Protection for iPhone: “Some actions such as accessing stored passwords and credit cards require a biometric authentication with Face ID or Touch ID — with no passcode alternative or fallback — so that only you can access these features.”
When the extra protection applies
By default, Stolen Device Protection applies its extra requirements when the iPhone is away from familiar locations, such as home or work. Apple also provides an option to require the added protections everywhere. The default setting therefore does not mean the same restrictions apply in every location.

Apple’s setup and settings guide explains how to enable the feature and choose its location behavior. Check the labels in Settings on your iPhone, since they can vary with software versions.
Password access and account changes use different checks
The biometric-only check for viewing stored passwords is distinct from the Security Delay used for certain critical changes. For actions such as changing the Apple Account password, the feature can require biometric authentication, a one-hour wait, and then another biometric check. Do not interpret that delay as a general waiting period for opening saved passwords.

What you need to turn it on
Apple lists Stolen Device Protection as available on iPhones running iOS 17.3 or later. Its setup requirements include an iPhone passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, two-factor authentication for the Apple Account, Find My, and specified Location Services settings. Follow Apple’s current instructions and verify the prerequisites on the device.
The feature must be enabled before the iPhone is lost or stolen. It cannot retroactively protect a device after it is already missing.

Locked apps are a related, separate feature
Apple says Stolen Device Protection extends an added layer to apps you have locked. Its locked-app instructions describe that relationship, but do not establish that the Passwords app is specifically covered by the locked-app workflow. For saved-password access, rely on Apple’s stated biometric requirement for stored passwords rather than assuming a particular app-lock behavior.

Stolen Device Protection makes the known iPhone passcode insufficient for the specified protected actions in the circumstances Apple documents. It is not evidence that every password-related risk is eliminated, nor do Apple’s feature materials provide a measured theft-reduction or adoption percentage. The FBI recommends enabling Stolen Device Protection as part of its cybersecurity best practices; its separate discussion of account security does not make a security key a requirement for this feature.
