If audio is quiet in every app, check your device’s volume and selected output instead. These steps help isolate the problem; Spotify’s documentation does not identify one universal cause of quiet or muffled playback.
First, check whether the problem is Spotify or your device
Play audio in another app through the same headphones, speakers, or other output. If that audio is also quiet, check the device’s output volume and confirm it is sending sound to the output you intend to use. If other apps sound normal and only Spotify is affected, continue with Spotify’s playback settings.
Adjust Spotify’s volume normalization
Volume normalization balances soft and loud songs. Spotify documents the Loud, Normal, and Quiet levels for Premium settings; Normal is the default, while Loud uses less dynamic variation. On mobile, the setting is under Profile picture > Settings and privacy > Playback. On iOS, look for Enable Audio Normalization; on Android, look under Volume controls. Choose Loud to try a stronger level, Normal for the default balance, or Quiet for a quieter environment. On desktop, open Profile > Settings and find Normalize volume and the volume-level control under Audio Quality. Spotify’s volume normalization instructions cover the setting and platform differences.
For technical context, Spotify for Artists lists a standard normalization target of -14 dB LUFS, with Premium listener targets of -11 dB LUFS for Loud, -14 dB LUFS for Normal, and -19 dB LUFS for Quiet. Spotify says album playback is normalized as an album so gain compensation does not change between tracks; shuffle or mixed-album listening adjusts tracks individually. These targets do not guarantee that every song will sound equally loud. Spotify for Artists explains its loudness normalization.

Use the equalizer to check for a muffled tone
An equalizer curve can change bass and treble, so a preset or custom curve may make playback sound different. For a baseline comparison, turn the equalizer off or set the curve to neutral, then replay the same passage. On mobile, go to Profile picture > Settings and privacy > Playback > Equalizer. On desktop, go to Profile > Settings > Playback > Equalizer. Spotify does not identify a single preset as the cause of muffled sound. On Android, a built-in system equalizer may also affect other apps. See Spotify’s equalizer instructions.
Do not confuse streaming quality with playback volume
Audio quality settings affect fidelity and data use, not the output-volume control. Spotify lists Automatic, Low, Normal, and High in the app, with Premium adding Very high and Lossless where supported. Its listed approximate compressed rates are 24 kbit/s for Low, 96 kbit/s for Normal, 160 kbit/s for High, and 320 kbit/s for Premium Very high. Spotify describes Lossless as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices. Higher quality can use more data and storage; Automatic adjustment is intended to avoid stuttering. The web player does not offer the same music-quality controls as the app. Changing quality may be relevant to fidelity or interruptions, but Spotify does not document it as a fix for quiet playback. Account for Spotify Connect and Windows Exclusive mode
Spotify Connect
When Spotify Connect is playing on another device, Spotify says mobile users cannot change audio settings in the controlling app during remote playback. Make available adjustments on the playback device or use its supported controls. Setting availability also differs between the app and web player.
Windows Exclusive mode
Exclusive mode is a specialist Premium feature for compatible external audio hardware, such as a DAC or audio interface. While it is active, other apps cannot play through that device. Spotify suggests disabling normalization and the equalizer when aiming for unprocessed playback. This mode is not a general fix for ordinary quiet playback and does not support Bluetooth headphones, built-in speakers, or virtual devices. See Spotify’s Exclusive mode guidance.
