Crashes in Unreal Engine games can be a symptom of Intel’s Vmin Shift Instability issue on some 13th- and 14th-generation Core desktop processors—but a crash alone does not prove the CPU is affected. Intel’s current guidance is to install the latest BIOS from your motherboard or system maker that includes microcode 0x12F or later, then use the relevant Intel Default Settings.
Why can an Intel processor crash an Unreal Engine game?
Intel has identified Vmin Shift Instability in some 13th- and 14th-generation Core desktop processors. The company says the issue originates in a clock-tree circuit within the IA core that is especially vulnerable to reliability aging under elevated voltage and temperature. The resulting clock-duty-cycle shift can make the system unstable, which may show up as a game crash. Intel’s root-cause update explains the mechanism.
Intel identified several operating conditions that could contribute to the instability:
- Motherboard power delivery settings that exceed Intel’s guidance.
- An eTVB microcode behavior that could allow 13th- and 14th-gen i9 desktop processors to remain in higher performance states at high temperatures.
- SVID algorithm voltage requests at a frequency and duration that could contribute to Vmin shift.
- Microcode and BIOS requests for elevated core voltage, including during idle or light activity.
Intel’s root-cause update describes earlier microcode mitigations for these behaviors: 0x125 addressed the eTVB behavior, 0x129 addressed high requested voltages, and 0x12B included those changes and addressed elevated voltage requests during idle or light activity. For troubleshooting now, use Intel’s newer current support guidance, which calls for BIOS microcode 0x12F or later rather than treating an older mitigation as the final step.

Which processors and crashes are in scope?
Intel’s current support article covers some 13th- and 14th-generation Core desktop processors, listing Core i5, i7, and i9 product families. That does not mean every processor in those families is defective, or that every crash on an Intel system has this cause. Intel says 13th- and 14th-generation mobile processors were not affected by this Vmin Shift issue at the time of its root-cause statement.
Dovetail Games’ support article, updated April 22, 2026, reports unexpected crashes in Unreal Engine games among players using 13th- and 14th-gen Intel CPUs. It says crashes can happen at different points, often after 10–20 minutes of play. This is a game publisher’s support description, not a controlled prevalence study or a diagnostic test: a crash at that interval does not establish that the processor has Vmin Shift Instability. No population-wide incidence estimate is given in the official materials cited here.

How to check and apply Intel’s current mitigation
- Identify the exact hardware. Note the full CPU model and whether the computer is a custom-built desktop, a prebuilt system, or a laptop. For a prebuilt computer, record its system model; for a custom desktop, identify the motherboard model.
- Find the vendor’s BIOS support page. Use the computer maker’s support page for a prebuilt system, or the motherboard maker’s support page for a custom build. Check the latest BIOS notes or release information for microcode 0x12F or later.
- Follow that vendor’s update procedure. BIOS update steps vary by system and motherboard. Use the maker’s instructions for the exact model; do not install firmware intended for a different board or system.
- Select the relevant Intel Default Settings. After the update, check BIOS setup and apply the Intel Default Settings option appropriate to the processor and board. Menu names and locations differ by vendor.
- Retest the system under your usual workload. If instability continues, contact the system or motherboard maker, or Intel support, and ask about diagnosis and warranty eligibility.
If you are not comfortable updating BIOS settings or firmware, ask the system maker or a qualified computer technician to help. Intel’s support article includes its support route and current guidance.
What to do if crashes continue
| Situation | Next step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A 13th- or 14th-gen desktop system is not on a current BIOS or is not using Intel Default Settings | Check the motherboard or system maker’s BIOS instructions, update to a release with microcode 0x12F or later, and apply the relevant Intel defaults. | This is Intel’s current mitigation guidance. |
| Instability remains after the current BIOS and defaults, or the computer is a prebuilt system | Contact the system maker or Intel support; check warranty eligibility for the exact processor. | A BIOS update cannot reverse physical degradation if it has occurred, and the available sources do not diagnose an individual computer. |
Avoid treating an arbitrary voltage offset, disabling CPU cores, or an unofficial BIOS profile as a universal fix. Those are not Intel’s current recommendations in the cited guidance. A crash may also have a cause unrelated to this CPU issue, so seek system-specific diagnosis if the official mitigation does not resolve it.
