Those phones use Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and AppGallery instead. The practical effect depends on which apps you need: apps that rely on Google services for features such as maps, sign-in, or notifications may lose functionality or fail to work properly, but this does not mean every app is unusable.
Why did some Huawei phones lose Google services?
On May 16, 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce added Huawei Technologies Co. and 68 non-U.S. affiliates to its Entity List. The following week, Commerce announced a Temporary General License for specific, limited transactions lasting 90 days. The department said the measure was intended to let existing Huawei phone users and rural broadband networks continue operating; it was not a general authorization for Google to provide services on newly launched phones. Google says its apps and services are available only on devices certified under Google Play Protect. Its guidance explains that new Huawei devices introduced after May 16, 2019 could not go through the relevant certification process under the restrictions. That makes a phone’s exact model and launch history important: a Huawei phone that was sold and certified before the change is not automatically equivalent to a later model. Does Huawei use Android without Google?
Android and Google Mobile Services are not the same thing. The UK Competition and Markets Authority describes Huawei devices as using a compatible version of Android with Huawei Mobile Services in place of GMS. What missing Google services can mean for apps
On affected models, Google apps such as Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, and Maps may not be preinstalled or officially available in the same way they are on a certified Android phone. The knock-on effects are not limited to Google’s own apps: third-party developers may rely on GMS APIs for particular functions. The CMA identifies mapping and push notifications as examples; an app that depends on Google services may lose a feature or may not work properly without them.
That is a compatibility risk, not proof that every third-party app fails. App behavior depends on the app’s design, the device, and the support the developer provides for HMS or other services. The cited sources do not establish a complete, current compatibility list for every app, Huawei model, and region.

What AppGallery and HMS provide—and what to check
Huawei describes AppGallery as its official app distribution platform for searching, downloading, managing, and sharing apps. HMS Core provides Huawei services used by supported devices. Huawei support says Huawei and Honor phones and tablets support HMS Core except devices running versions before EMUI 3; its guidance also covers installing AppGallery and HMS Core on some non-Huawei Android devices. Having AppGallery and HMS does not guarantee that a specific app is available, current, or as fully featured as its version on Google Play. Check the app’s actual listing and feature support for your country and the exact phone model rather than relying on general app-count claims.

How to check whether a Huawei phone will suit you
- Identify the precise model and market variant. Do not infer Google support from the Huawei brand name alone; launch date and certification status matter.
- Check Play Protect certification. Use Google’s certification guidance and confirm the status of the exact model with the seller.
- List your essential apps. Prioritize banking, workplace sign-in, navigation, payments, and messaging. Check whether each publisher officially supports that phone and region through AppGallery or HMS.
- Check essential features, not just app names. Find out whether the functions you need rely on Google sign-in, maps, push notifications, payments, or other GMS APIs. Decide whether a web version is an acceptable substitute.
- Compare the whole phone for your needs. Consider app-store and developer support alongside security updates, price, battery, camera, and performance. If Google-dependent apps are essential, a Google Play Protect certified Android phone is a more appropriate category to consider.
Why a universal workaround is not a safe assumption
Unofficial methods for adding Google services are not validated by the cited official sources as reliable, secure, or compatible across Huawei models. Do not treat a workaround found online as a guarantee that Google apps or GMS-dependent features will function. For a purchase decision, verify official support for the exact model and the apps you need.
