If screenshots are “not working” in Windows 10 or Windows 11, first identify where the image is supposed to go. Windows + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool and copies a selected snip to the clipboard; Windows + PrtScn saves a full-screen image in PicturesScreenshots; PrtScn by itself copies the full screen to the clipboard, while Alt + PrtScn copies only the active window. A missing file therefore does not necessarily mean capture failed.
Run these three tests first
- Test a selectable capture: press Windows + Shift + S. When the overlay appears, choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture. Drag or select the area. Windows copies the result to the clipboard; select the notification if you want to edit and save it in Snipping Tool.
- Test an automatic file save: press Windows + PrtScn. Open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots.
- Test the clipboard directly: press PrtScn, open Paint or another image-capable app, and press Ctrl + V. The standalone key does not specify a file location.
These tests separate a capture problem from a destination problem. If one works, use that path while you diagnose the shortcut that does not.
Know what each Windows screenshot shortcut does
| Shortcut | What Windows captures | Where the result goes | How to save it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | A region, window, or screen selected in Snipping Tool | Clipboard, plus a notification | Open the notification in Snipping Tool and choose Save |
| Windows + PrtScn | The entire screen | Pictures > Screenshots | Already saved as an image file |
| PrtScn | The entire screen | Clipboard | Paste into Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable app, then save |
| Alt + PrtScn | The active window | Clipboard | Paste into an image-capable app and save |
Microsoft documents these different destinations for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Choose the shortcut based on the output you need, not only on the key you normally press.
When pressing PrtScn appears to do nothing
Check the clipboard before assuming failure
Press PrtScn, switch to Paint, and press Ctrl + V. If an image appears, capture succeeded and only the expected clipboard workflow was missing. The same test works for Alt + PrtScn, which captures the active window.

Use an independent capture path
Press Windows + Shift + S. This invokes Snipping Tool without relying on the standalone Print Screen behavior. If the overlay opens and the snip pastes successfully, the keyboard shortcut or its configuration—not Windows screen capture generally—is the likely boundary to investigate.
Try the laptop combination when there is no dedicated key
Some laptops omit a physical PrtScn key. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternate for devices without that button. Keyboard layouts and firmware vary, so check the laptop maker’s instructions if this combination does not respond. An external USB keyboard is optional; use one only to determine whether the built-in keyboard is the failing component.
When Windows saves no screenshot file
Check the correct folder
After Windows + PrtScn, open Pictures > Screenshots. Do not look only in Downloads, Desktop, or the folder used by another screenshot application.
Remember that PrtScn alone does not save a file
PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn place an image on the clipboard. Paste immediately into Paint or another image-capable destination, then use that app’s Save command.

Save a Snipping Tool capture explicitly
A snip made with Windows + Shift + S is copied to the clipboard and shown in a notification. Select the notification to open the editor, then use its Save control. Closing the notification without saving can leave you with no file even though the capture worked.
When the screenshot will not paste
Make a fresh capture and paste immediately
Capture a small, visible desktop area with Windows + Shift + S, open Paint, and press Ctrl + V. This avoids testing an old clipboard item or an application that cannot accept images.
Distinguish clipboard history from ordinary clipboard use
Windows + V opens clipboard history. Windows asks you to enable history the first time; that feature is optional. Ordinary copying and pasting does not require clipboard history. If history is empty or disabled, still test a direct Ctrl + V after a new snip.
Clear stale clipboard data only when needed
If a previous item keeps appearing, use the clipboard settings to clear it, capture again, and paste the new result. Clipboard-history settings do not establish the cause of every paste failure, so use the direct Paint test to isolate the problem.

When PrtScn opens a selection overlay
Windows can be configured so the Print Screen button opens screen snipping instead of placing a full-screen image on the clipboard. In Windows Settings, go to Accessibility > Keyboard and inspect the control for using the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
If you want a file saved automatically, leave that behavior aside and press Windows + PrtScn, then check Pictures > Screenshots. If you want a selectable region, the overlay is expected behavior; complete the selection and save from Snipping Tool.
When only one app or video area looks wrong
Test a normal desktop area and then repeat with Snipping Tool. If the desktop works but one application or video is black, blank, or unavailable, the evidence does not identify a universal Windows setting that will override that application’s capture behavior or content restrictions. Treat it as app-specific: check whether another window in the same app captures, compare window and region modes, and consult that application’s support information. Do not infer that a general keyboard repair will fix a restriction limited to one program or protected video.
Permissions and third-party screenshot apps
If Windows’ built-in shortcuts work but a third-party tool cannot read or save images, review that app’s access to relevant libraries such as Pictures, Videos, or Documents. Microsoft notes that desktop apps may not appear in the same permission lists as Store apps, so the visible permission controls can differ. These permissions are relevant to an app that cannot access files; they are not a demonstrated explanation for a failure of Windows’ own capture shortcuts.

A symptom-by-symptom repair path
Nothing visibly happens
- Paste after PrtScn into Paint.
- Try Windows + Shift + S.
- If there is no dedicated key, try Fn + Windows + Space Bar.
- If all three fail, move to device-specific checks: keyboard layout, the Fn key, and the laptop manufacturer’s instructions. The Microsoft material does not establish one universal driver or system-file cause.
There is no file
- Confirm you used Windows + PrtScn, not standalone PrtScn.
- Check Pictures > Screenshots.
- For Snipping Tool, open the notification and use Save.
The wrong window or area is captured
Use Alt + PrtScn for the active window, or Windows + Shift + S and choose window or rectangular mode. For full-screen output, use Windows + PrtScn.
The shortcut works intermittently
Repeat the test with a simple desktop area and note the destination. A result that appears only after pasting may be normal clipboard behavior rather than intermittent capture. If the physical key fails while the alternate Snipping Tool path works, compare the built-in keyboard with an external keyboard before changing Windows settings.

It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need clipboard history to take a screenshot?
No. Clipboard history, opened with Windows + V, is an optional list of copied items. A fresh screenshot can be pasted directly with Ctrl + V without enabling history.
Where does Windows save a screenshot taken with Windows + PrtScn?
Windows documents the destination as Pictures > Screenshots. Standalone PrtScn uses the clipboard instead of that folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if my laptop has no Print Screen key?
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar for devices without a dedicated PrtScn button. Because keyboard layouts differ, verify the combination in your device maker’s instructions.
