Space services can be disrupted without attacking a spacecraft. The February 2022 KA-SAT incident shows how a cyberattack on satellite-network infrastructure and user modems can interrupt communications across borders. It is the clearest documented example behind the ground-segment focus in SpaceWatch.GLOBAL’s October 1, 2026 Mission-K interview with Marco Schmidt of Trend AI; the accessible interview page does not provide enough detail to attribute a particular attack path or security recommendation to Schmidt.
What “ground segment” means in a satellite service
A satellite communications service is more than the spacecraft in orbit. It also depends on terrestrial network infrastructure and equipment at the user end, including satellite modems. Those components connect users to the service and help make communication possible. A cyberattack affecting network infrastructure or terminals can therefore interrupt service even when public accounts do not describe the spacecraft itself as the target.
That distinction is central to understanding why the ground segment matters: a service can rely on space hardware while remaining exposed to failures or attacks in its terrestrial network. The available account of KA-SAT supports this distinction, but does not establish a complete technical attack chain.
What happened in the KA-SAT incident
The Council of the European Union said an attack targeted Viasat’s KA-SAT satellite network about one hour before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In a declaration published May 10, 2022, the Council attributed the malicious cyber activity to Russia. It described indiscriminate communications outages and disruption affecting Ukrainian public authorities, businesses and users, as well as users in several EU member states. The UK government reported on May 10, 2022 that the UK National Cyber Security Centre assessed Russia was responsible for the Viasat attack. Its summary likewise placed the incident about an hour before the invasion and reported effects on Ukrainian customers, wind farms and internet users in central Europe. These are official government assessments and declarations, not a court judgment. UK government announcement.
How the disruption reached users beyond Ukraine
The reported impact crossed national borders and sectors. The UK government cited affected wind farms and internet users in central Europe; the EU described effects in multiple member states. ENISA’s Threat Landscape 2022 says Viasat satellite modems were not functioning and identifies AcidRain as a wiper used in the incident. It also notes spillover affecting wind farms and satellite internet connectivity across central Europe. ENISA, Threat Landscape 2022.

- AUTOMATIC SATELLITE ACQUISITION: Self-pointing portable antenna locates DISH satellites in minutes without manual pointing. Designed for RV and mobile use, the antenna locks onto signal quickly and maintains stable HD reception.
- WATCH TWO CHANNELS SIMULTANEOUSLY: Independent viewing capability allows two compatible DISH receivers to operate simultaneously. This makes it easy to watch different channels on separate TVs.
- RUGGED OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION: Engineered for field-ready durability with a weather-resistant housing to withstand road travel and extended outdoor exposure. Compact dome design measures approximately 14.3” in diameter and 13.5” in height.
- BROAD DISH COMPATIBILITY: Works with DISH Wally and select ViP receivers for seamless integration into existing satellite setups. Compatible with pay-as-you-go programming, which is great for RVs, tailgating, and camping.
- TRUSTED U.S.-BASED DESIGN: Built on decades of Winegard technology expertise, delivering dependable performance, and U.S.-based servers for privacy and security, eliminating foreign monitoring concerns.
This is an example of service disruption and operational spillover, not evidence of physical damage to a satellite. The public descriptions establish the reported network and modem consequences, but they do not provide enough detail here to reconstruct the attackers’ full access route, the precise sequence of technical actions, or the architecture of every affected service.
What the incident does—and does not—show about space security
- It shows a ground-dependent service can be disrupted. Satellite communications rely on terrestrial infrastructure and user equipment as well as the spacecraft.
- It distinguishes a service attack from a spacecraft attack. The cited public accounts focus on the KA-SAT network, communications outages and non-functioning modems; they do not describe the spacecraft as the target.
- It documents spillover. Official accounts report effects beyond Ukraine, including central European wind farms and internet users.
- It does not establish a universal architecture or defense recipe. The incident cannot by itself prove that all space operators have the same vulnerabilities, nor does the accessible interview page substantiate a specific exploit chain or defense recommendation from Schmidt.
What is known about the Mission-K interview
SpaceWatch.GLOBAL published the interview on October 1, 2026, crediting Torsten Kriening and identifying Marco Schmidt of Trend AI as the guest. The page places the conversation at Mission-K in Kalkar and frames cyber and space as intertwined domains of hybrid warfare, emphasizing the February 2022 satellite communications attack and ground-segment vulnerability. The interview itself requires membership, so its detailed technical explanation and any direct recommendations are not available in the accessible material. SpaceWatch.GLOBAL interview page.
