If a CSS background appears in Chrome or Firefox but disappears in Safari, debug four separate layers: the image request, the matched CSS declaration, the element’s box, and Safari or iOS-specific behavior. Safari supports modern background-size values such as cover and contain, so replacing working CSS with a vendor prefix is rarely the right first move. Inspect the computed style and network request, give the element visible dimensions, then isolate sizing, positioning, repeat, attachment, and loading behavior.
Start with the rendered element, not the stylesheet
Open Safari’s Web Inspector (Develop menu on macOS; remote inspection from a Mac for iPhone or iPad) and select the element that should display the image. Work through these checks in order.
- Verify selector matching. In the Styles panel, confirm your rule is applied. Look for a later rule, media query, or component style that overrides it.
- Read the computed value. The computed
background-imagemust contain a URL, notnone. A laterbackgroundshorthand can reset individual longhands, including the image. - Check the request. In the Network panel, reload and find the image URL. A 404, a case mismatch in the path, an incorrect relative URL, a redirect problem, or a host that blocks the request will prevent the background from rendering. Open the same URL directly in Safari to distinguish a CSS problem from an asset problem.
- Check the box. A background belongs to the element’s box. If width or height collapses to zero, the element is hidden, or another layer covers it, there is no visible area in which to paint the image.
- Add a diagnostic color. Temporarily set a contrasting
background-color. If the color appears, the element and selector are working and the fault is probably the image URL or image sizing. If the color also disappears, continue with selector, geometry, visibility, and stacking checks.
These tests prevent you from treating every missing image as a Safari compatibility bug.
Use explicit background properties while diagnosing
Safari treats the image, position, repeat, attachment, and size as separate controls. Split a shorthand declaration into longhands so each value is visible in the inspector:

}The minimum height is only an example; choose dimensions appropriate to your layout. The important diagnostic properties are explicit and independently adjustable.
When the image is cropped or appears too large
background-size: cover fills the box while preserving the image’s aspect ratio, so some edges may be cropped. Use contain when the entire image must remain visible; it may leave empty space. auto uses the image’s intrinsic dimensions. WebKit documents all three as supported values. After selecting a size, adjust background-position (for example, center top) to keep the important part in view.
When only part of the image repeats
Set background-repeat: no-repeat for a single hero image. If a tile is intended, use repeat-x, repeat-y, or repeat deliberately. A shorthand such as background: url(...) center/cover can reset repeat, color, and attachment values from earlier declarations, so inspect the final computed style.

Fix the element’s geometry and stacking
A correctly downloaded image still cannot appear on a zero-sized or covered element. Check the following in the Layout and Computed panels:

min-height, fixed height, padding, or content that establishes its dimensions. - Confirm that a parent is not
display: none, that the element is notvisibility: hiddenor fully transparent, and that a media query has not removed its dimensions. - Inspect
overflow: hiddenand clipping paths. They can hide the painted area even when the element itself exists. - Check positioned overlays, pseudo-elements, and high
z-indexlayers. Temporarily disable them to see whether they cover the background. - Make sure the background is attached to the element you think it is. A class on a wrapper does not paint behind a child unless the wrapper has a visible box.
Use the element’s box highlight in Web Inspector and temporarily add an outline such as outline: 2px solid magenta to make its actual bounds obvious.
Investigate URL and loading failures
Relative paths and case sensitivity
A URL in a stylesheet is resolved relative to the CSS file, not necessarily the HTML document. For example, url("../images/hero.jpg") points one directory above the stylesheet. Production servers can be case-sensitive even when local development is not, so Hero.jpg and hero.jpg may be different files.

Response and hosting checks
Open the request in the Network panel and verify a successful status, a non-empty response, and an image content type. Check authentication, hotlink protection, certificate errors, redirects, and content-security-policy rules if the request is blocked. A background image does not use an HTML img element, so an image fallback or alt text will not appear when it fails.
Lazy loading and the iOS 15.5 report
WebKit Bugzilla report 241512 records a historical iOS 15.5 issue involving lazy-loaded images and CSS background-image; the report was marked as a duplicate. It is a version-specific lead, not evidence that lazy loading breaks backgrounds in current Safari. If your failure began after enabling lazy loading, reproduce it on the affected device and Safari version, then test without lazy loading and with the image requested immediately.
Handle iPhone and iPad background attachment behavior
On iOS, background-attachment: fixed has documented limitations. WebKit report 234779 describes cases where the background is cropped or its position and size are ignored. This does not establish the same limitation for desktop Safari.

}Test this replacement on the actual iOS versions you support. Do not apply -webkit-background-size as a blanket modern fix; WebKit lists the unprefixed property as supported and mentions the alias for compatibility history.
When Safari shows the image but it looks soft
Blurriness on an iPhone or iPad is an asset-density issue, not a failed background request. High-density displays may need an appropriately larger source image or density-aware selection. Apple’s archived guidance on serving images to displays of varying pixel density describes image sets for choosing assets by display density.

- Reproduce the issue in the exact desktop Safari or iOS Safari version and record whether other browsers work.
- Inspect the element and disable all background declarations, then add a contrasting color.
- Restore
background-imagewith an absolute or known-good URL and check the Network panel. - Give the element a temporary width,
min-height, outline, and solid color. - Add
background-repeat: no-repeat,background-position: center, andbackground-size: coverseparately. - On iOS, remove
background-attachment: fixedand compare scrolling and cropping. - If the image is soft rather than absent, inspect density-aware assets.
- Retest after removing lazy loading only when the symptom and version make the historical iOS report relevant.

Testing practices that prevent regressions
Keep a small test page with the target background, a visible diagnostic color, and explicit longhand properties. Test at least one desktop Safari build and each iOS version you claim to support, at the viewport sizes where the design changes. Capture a Network log for failures and compare computed styles between a working browser and Safari. Avoid relying on a prefixed declaration unless you have reproduced a specific legacy-version requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Safari require a special prefix for background-size?
No. WebKit documents the unprefixed property and supports values including auto, cover, and contain. Investigate the computed style, request, and element box before adding a prefix.
Why does the same background work on macOS Safari but not iPhone Safari?
Compare the target iOS version, element dimensions, and use of background-attachment: fixed. iOS has documented limitations for fixed backgrounds that do not apply as a blanket rule to desktop Safari.
Can an image-set fix a missing background?
No. image-set() addresses density and softness after an image loads. It cannot repair a bad URL, blocked request, overridden declaration, or zero-sized element.
