Content may appear only after scrolling, interaction, or additional time. First determine whether the content is absent, hidden, clipped, or in a separate scrolling container, then choose a readiness wait or scrolling strategy that fits the page.
What fullPage does—and does not do
Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference defines fullPage as an optional boolean: when true, it takes a screenshot of the full page. The option controls capture extent; it does not promise to scroll through the page to trigger site-specific loading behavior or wait for application content to exist. The same reference treats clip and captureBeyondViewport as separate controls.
The screenshot guide covers page and element screenshots. An element screenshot can scroll a hidden element into view by default, but that behavior is distinct from loading every item on a page. The page-level method is Page.screenshot(), documented in the Page.screenshot API reference.
Why below-the-fold content is missing
Lazy-loaded images, iframes, or other resources
Some pages load resources only as they approach the viewport. A historical Puppeteer report describes lower-page screenshot content missing on a page with lazy-loaded images and an iframe, even though some text was already in the DOM. That report is an example, not proof that lazy loading explains every incomplete screenshot. The issue report illustrates why a page can contain some content while resources farther down remain unavailable.

Scroll-triggered rendering
An application may create or reveal a component only after a scroll event or intersection with the viewport. A full-page capture should not be assumed to reproduce the sequence of scrolling and interactions a person would perform.
Capture starts before the application is ready
A navigation wait condition can indicate that a browser load milestone has occurred without guaranteeing that a particular component or delayed request is complete. If a specific section matters, wait for a selector or application state that represents that section’s readiness.

Nested scroll areas and fixed-height layouts
The missing material may live inside an independently scrolling panel rather than the document’s main scroll area. Capturing the document’s full extent does not necessarily capture the entire contents of a nested container. Check the layout and the element’s scrollable dimensions before changing screenshot options.
Version-dependent capture behavior
Puppeteer’s historical v2.0.0 discussion describes tradeoffs involving viewport clipping, resizing, and scrolling. Workarounds from old discussions are not universal fixes: record the installed Puppeteer and bundled Chromium versions, then reproduce the problem with those versions before adopting a flag or capture technique.

Diagnose the page before changing capture strategy
- Compare the page before and after scrolling. Open the target page at the same viewport, note whether the missing section appears only after scrolling, and check whether it requires interaction.
- Inspect the missing element. Determine whether it is absent from the DOM, present but hidden, clipped by an ancestor, or inside a separate scroll container. These are different problems and need different remedies.
- Wait for page-specific readiness. Prefer a selector or state tied to the content you need over assuming a generic navigation milestone means the application is complete. Network-idle waits alone may not represent the state that matters.
- Scroll when scrolling triggers the content. Move through the relevant document or nested container in steps, allow content to load, and take the final full-page screenshot after the required sections are ready. Recheck document height while scrolling if new content increases the page length.
- Validate the resulting image. Confirm that the content appears and that viewport-dependent layout, sticky elements, and dynamic regions still look right. A longer screenshot is not necessarily a more faithful one.
Choose a remedy that matches the cause
| Situation | Approach to try | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Static content exists and is visible in the document | Use a direct fullPage capture; if only one region is needed, capture the target element. |
Confirm the element is not hidden, clipped, or in a nested scroller. |
| A section appears after scrolling | Scroll the relevant area in steps, wait for the section’s readiness, then capture. | Check that scrolling actually triggers the content and that the page has a finite stopping point. |
| Considering viewport resizing | Test resizing only after documenting the intended viewport and comparing the resulting layout. | Resizing can change responsive layout and affect lazy loading. |
| Considering scroll-and-stitch capture | Validate it against the target page before relying on it. | Sticky elements may repeat, parallax backgrounds can distort, infinite scrolling complicates stopping, and shifting content can make stitched sections inconsistent. |
These tradeoffs are discussed in Puppeteer’s historical capture-behavior discussion. Neither resizing nor stitching is a universal improvement; judge the result by completeness, fidelity at the intended viewport, treatment of sticky elements, dynamic stability, and whether the page has a clear end.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The screenshot ends at the viewport: Confirm the call uses
fullPage: true, and check whether aclipoption or other capture setting constrains the output. - The screenshot is full-height but a section is blank: Check whether the section exists in the DOM and whether its resources load only near the viewport. Scroll to it, wait for it, and capture again.
- The element exists but cannot be seen: Inspect computed visibility, clipping ancestors, and the relevant container’s scroll position.
- Waiting longer does not help: Replace a generic wait with a selector or state specific to the missing content; the application may require scrolling or interaction rather than elapsed time.
- An old workaround changes the layout: Check Puppeteer and Chromium versions and retest at the intended viewport. Do not assume historical flags behave the same in a current installation.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without maintaining a Puppeteer capture flow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. Its one-call request can return an image or PDF; see the API documentation for options.
