The strongest explanation is a combination of new ways to present a story, memorable character stakes, and themes that gave players something to carry away. That does not mean every game—or every player—responds the same way.
How the PlayStation changed what an RPG could show
The PlayStation’s shift to 3D and CD-ROM storage expanded the storytelling toolkit. Games could combine 3D characters, 2D art, CD audio, and more extensive cinematic sequences than cartridge-era storage typically allowed. In a 2021 interview, Final Fantasy VII director Yoshinori Kitase recalled that the team wanted 3D to bring characters and story to life more vividly, and that CD-ROM capacity made many movie scenes possible.

Those scenes could give a world a striking sense of scale, but technology alone does not explain why a story lingers. The more durable effect comes when presentation supports characters and stakes players can understand and remember.
Character arcs made large-scale stories personal
Final Fantasy VII pairs a conflict involving corporate power and a world in danger with individual characters’ histories and relationships. Kitase said the team gave its many characters deep stories and arcs. That is a creator’s account of design intent, not proof that every player connected with each character in the same way.

The story’s best-known irreversible loss also served a deliberate thematic purpose. As reported by Game Developer while relaying Polygon’s oral history, character and battle visual director Tetsuya Nomura said the team wanted to depict a death that could not be undone so players would think more deeply about the game’s theme of life. The choice made a broad idea concrete through a personal consequence.
Kitase has described the original game as having a “timeless appeal” and connected its continuing fan support to the series’ later titles. That is his interpretation of the game’s staying power, rather than an independent measurement of why players return to it.

PS1 RPGs did not all tell the same kind of story
Remembering the era as one uniform style misses the differences in what its games emphasized. Final Fantasy VII uses intimate character arcs within a large-scale crisis; Xenogears is known for religious allusions and psychological and philosophical themes; Vagrant Story stands apart for its pseudo-medieval voice and distinctive English-language localization. A history of 1990s JRPGs by Aidan Moher in The Washington Post discusses these contrasting approaches.
That variety helps explain why “PS1 RPG story” does not name one emotional formula. A player might remember a philosophical idea, an unusual voice, a close-knit cast, or the contrast between private loss and a world-sized threat.

Localization shaped the story players received
For players outside Japan, localization was part of the narrative experience. It had to carry more than the central plot: dialogue, humor, side quests, menus, and the tone of a fictional world all affected how the story came across. Moher’s history describes localization craft developing during the 1990s, while also noting that Final Fantasy VII’s original English text could be awkward enough to harm the narrative.
That tension matters. A game can leave a powerful impression despite clumsy lines, while a distinctive translation can become part of its identity. The same history contrasts Final Fantasy VII’s criticized English text with Vagrant Story’s memorable voice. Nostalgia for a story, then, need not mean that every sentence has aged well.

Square Enix’s later interview about the first six Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters offers a useful, limited comparison: its localization team discussed preserving familiar lines while updating language and standards. That account concerns those remasters, not the specific revision history of PS1 RPG scripts, but it illustrates how affection for old wording can coexist with editorial change.

Final Fantasy VII’s reach helped carry the genre to more Western players: Moher’s 2023 Washington Post feature reports that it sold over 3 million units in North America. That figure describes sales in one region as reported by the article; it is not global lifetime sales and does not measure emotional attachment.

The available accounts support a grounded explanation: the PS1 enabled more expansive audiovisual presentation, creators built character arcs and consequential stakes, and games offered sharply different themes and voices. They do not establish a universal cause for present-day attachment or show how many players value these stories now. Kitase’s recollection and the games’ history make the case for why particular stories could endure, not a claim that everyone remembers them for the same reason.
