Prediction markets misread Brazil’s 2026 presidential runoff because the quoted prices came from a thin, internationally dominated market rather than a broad cross-section of Brazilian voters and informed traders. Flávio Bolsonaro led the first round, but Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the 25 October runoff. Before voting, Polymarket put Lula near 20% and Flávio near 80%; Kalshi was reported at 76.8% for Flávio on voting morning. The miss reflects restricted local participation, low liquidity and incorrect assumptions about turnout and second-round vote transfers—not proof that every prediction market is inherently useless.
What actually happened in Brazil’s 2026 election?
Flávio Bolsonaro led the 4 October first round, receiving 56,104,268 votes, or 47.03% of valid votes, according to Brazil’s Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE). Lula received 53,876,617 votes, or 45.16%.
That lead did not carry into the runoff on 25 October. Lula won 64,256,232 votes, 51.79% of valid ballots, while Flávio received 59,826,041, or 48.21%.

The market prices were therefore directionally wrong about the winner, but they were not claiming Lula had no chance. A 20% probability describes an event that should occur roughly once in five comparable cases if prices are well calibrated; one upset cannot by itself establish systematic failure.

Why did Polymarket think Flávio Bolsonaro would win?
Polymarket’s pre-runoff price put Lula at about 20% and Flávio at about 80%, as reported by Decrypt in 2026. The price appears to have reflected a simple narrative: Flávio had finished first, polls and campaign coverage were interpreted through that result, and traders expected the first-round advantage to persist.
Einar Knobel, CEO and co-founder of TxODDS, described the information flow this way: “The price was set mostly by people outside the country. They were trading the first-round result, poll headlines, and the story built around them.” That is a description of a market repeatedly reacting to the same public signals, not independently aggregating a wide range of local information.
How did Brazil’s trading restrictions change the market?
Brazilian residents were blocked from participating in the relevant offshore prediction markets under CMN Resolution 5.298/2026, effective 4 May, alongside TSE Resolution 23.735/2024, according to InfoMoney. Trading continued outside Brazil, but the people most likely to possess direct knowledge of regional campaigns, local turnout and voter switching were excluded from the order book.

The restriction does not prove that the ban caused the incorrect forecast by itself. It changed who could supply information and risk-bearing capital. An offshore market can still incorporate news, but its participants may rely more heavily on translated coverage, national headlines and market narratives than on firsthand local signals.
Did thin liquidity make the price less reliable?
Yes, limited liquidity made it harder for an opposing view to move the price. Einar Knobel told Decrypt that the Brazil market drew only 4.5% of the volume of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. InfoMoney reported about US$170 million traded in contracts tied to expectations for Brazil’s election, but that headline total does not mean the market had the same depth or continuous two-sided participation as a much larger election market.
- Fewer independent views: a small participant pool is more vulnerable to shared assumptions.
- Less corrective trading: traders who believed Lula was undervalued needed enough available orders to buy at scale and move the quote.
- Wider practical risk: a displayed probability can look precise even when a relatively small amount of money supports it.
Liquidity is not the same as accuracy, but it determines how quickly a market can absorb a credible disagreement.

What assumptions about the runoff were wrong?
Luke Nolan of CoinShares said predictors placed too much weight on Flávio’s first-round performance, underestimated increased second-round turnout and made incorrect assumptions about how voters whose candidates were eliminated would transfer.

A runoff is not simply a replay with two names left on the ballot. Turnout can change, endorsements can alter incentives, and voters who supported eliminated candidates may split differently from what a first-round vote share suggests. The market’s model—or the informal mental models used by its traders—did not adjust enough for those transitions.
Was this mainly a retail-trader mistake?
Not necessarily. A pseudonymous Polymarket trader known as FhantomBets argued that professional traders recognized a much higher Lula probability during live trading: “Sharps [a term for professional, high-stakes predictors] knew the market was mispriced, probably closer to 30-40% on [event] day. Mispricing was most evident during live trading, Lula was nearly a lock by 6:15 pm ET when Lula ‘Yes’ was 60c.”

The same trader also said: “Retail traders were so against Lula that you could get unlimited size at 60-80c when Lula had ‘essentially’ already won.” Nolan cautioned against assigning the entire error to retail participants. More users can improve a market when they bring different information and can trade on it; adding users who repeat the same narrative does not create diversity.

No. Nolan put the result in probability terms: “That said, Lula was priced at around 20% before the vote. That is still some form of meaningful chance of winning. I think there are good reasons to question whether the market underestimated him. Ultimately, something that has an 80% chance of happening does not happen 20% of the time.”
The stronger question is calibration across many comparable elections. If contracts priced near 20% win close to 20% of the time, an individual loss is normal variance. If they win far less often, the market is systematically overconfident. Brazil supplies a warning about market design and participation, but it is not a complete calibration study.

How should readers judge a prediction market next time?
Check the market’s conditions before treating its percentage as a national forecast:
- Calibration: compare similar historical prices with actual outcomes, not just the latest result.
- Liquidity: inspect volume, order-book depth and whether a modest trade can move the quote.
- Participant geography: ask whether residents with relevant local knowledge can legally and practically participate.
- Information diversity: look for evidence that traders use independent data rather than repeating the same poll headline.
- Rules: verify settlement language, eligibility restrictions and what event the contract actually measures.
- Timing: see whether the price incorporated runoff turnout and voter-transfer information as it became available.
- Benchmarks: compare the market with contemporaneous polls, polling averages and other forecasts rather than treating the market as the sole reference point.
Brazil’s episode shows why a market price must be read as a conditional estimate produced by a particular group of participants under particular rules. It was a useful signal of what those traders believed, but not a neutral national poll.
