Game prices vary by storefront region and developer or publisher decisions; hardware costs depend on the performance you want, the parts you need, and local prices. Plan those as separate budgets, then compare complete systems against the games and display you actually use.
Why are PC games more expensive in some countries?
Regional game pricing is not simply a US price converted at the day’s exchange rate. Steam supports pricing in 37 currencies and four region groups, and developers choose the prices they enter for each currency and region group. Valve’s About Regional Pricing page says its current conversion methods use public data as of January 2026.
Steam’s pricing tools offer three approaches: exchange-rate conversion, purchasing-power conversion based on public data, and a multi-variable method that also considers local purchasing power, comparable entertainment costs, and exchange rates. These are aids rather than required prices: Steam says the price entered for each currency and region group is up to the developer. The options and their role are explained in Valve’s Pricing documentation.
That means a game’s local price can reflect more than currency conversion, and it may change over time. Steam’s system should not be assumed to describe every other storefront. For your budget, check the price shown in the regional store where you plan to buy, and factor in the timing of any sale rather than estimating from another country’s listed price.

Why does a gaming PC change the budget?
A game purchase and a gaming-capable computer are different costs. The computer is an upfront purchase shaped by the games you want to run and the resolution and performance you expect. A system intended for 1080p play is not automatically an adequate or cost-effective choice for a higher-resolution target or a high frame rate.
There is no defensible universal gaming-PC budget in the available figures: component prices and availability differ by location, and the specifications needed depend on the title and settings. As one vendor example—not an independent test or guarantee—HP’s 2026 gaming hardware guide lists a Ryzen 5- or Core i5-class processor, RTX 5060-class or better graphics, 16GB DDR5 memory, and a 512GB NVMe SSD as entry-level gaming PC guidance. Actual performance depends on the complete system, game, settings, and resolution; check each game’s published requirements before buying.

How should you build a realistic gaming budget?
- Choose the games first. Make a list of the titles you expect to play and check their published system requirements. This defines a more useful starting point than a generic “gaming PC” label.
- Set your display target. Decide on the resolution and performance level you want. Use that target when comparing graphics cards and complete systems; higher resolution or frame-rate goals can change what hardware is appropriate.
- Inventory what you already own. List reusable components and peripherals, then budget for the full system rather than the graphics card alone. Include any parts or equipment still needed to make the setup usable.
- Separate the two spending timelines. Treat the PC and other required equipment as the initial hardware purchase. Budget game purchases separately using prices in your regional storefront and the sale timing you are willing to wait for.
- Compare complete options locally. Include required components and, where relevant, tax and delivery. Check performance for your target, memory and storage capacity, compatibility and upgrade path, warranty and support, and any games actually included in a bundle. Local availability can change which option offers better value.
Should you spend more on a graphics card or buy more storage?
That depends on what is limiting your intended use. A graphics card should be judged against the resolution and performance you want in your games; storage capacity should be judged against the games and other files you plan to keep installed. A smaller drive may reduce the purchase cost, but it also leaves less room for installations and may mean managing or replacing storage sooner.
Futurum Research’s PC Pricing & Demand Under Pressure: How Consumers Will Actually Respond, based on its March 2026 PC Buyers Survey, reports that among respondents who said they would spec down, 45% named storage as the first sacrifice, compared with 5% who named processor speed and RAM. Those are respondents’ stated choices, not evidence that storage is always the right place to economize. The report also says 77% of 462 surveyed buyers indicated they would postpone rather than overpay. Consider whether reducing capacity fits your own games and workload before choosing a smaller drive.

- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
What should you check before choosing between two PCs?
- Total local cost: Compare the price of a complete usable system, including required parts and applicable tax or delivery—not just one prominent component.
- Performance fit: Check whether the system suits your chosen games, target resolution, and expected performance.
- Memory and storage: Compare both capacity and the specific configuration, not just whether each system has an SSD or DDR5 memory.
- Compatibility and upgrades: Confirm that parts work together and that the upgrade path suits your plans.
- Warranty and support: Compare the coverage included with each system and who provides support.
- Included games: If a bundle is offered, value only the games you actually want, and compare that offer with local storefront prices.
No single option is the winner for every buyer: regional pricing, stock, and the performance you need all affect the comparison. Use local totals and your own game list to decide whether paying more now meets a real requirement or whether waiting is preferable.
