First identify where the VOD playlist is playing: an OBS VLC Video source, a YouTube player in a browser, or another source. Each has different playback controls. If you use VLC Video, check its playlist and visibility settings; if you use YouTube’s player, check Autoplay on the device controlling that player. Then compare OBS’s preview with the live output to tell a playback problem from a stream-delivery problem.
Identify how the VOD is being played
“The next VOD did not play” can describe different failures: the current clip ends and nothing follows, the next clip is missing, the preview goes black, or OBS shows the next clip while viewers do not see it. Before changing settings, identify the source that actually plays the gaming VODs.
| Playback route | Where to check the next item | Setting that may matter |
|---|---|---|
| OBS VLC Video source | The playlist in that OBS source | Playlist contents and order, Loop Playlist, Shuffle Playlist, and Visibility Behaviour |
| YouTube player or a browser page | The YouTube player or page being captured | YouTube Autoplay on the device where that player is controlled |
| Another OBS media source | The source’s own playback controls | VLC playlist controls may not apply |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes VLC Video as a playlist-capable source that uses VLC libraries. If you are unsure which source you added, select it in the Sources list and inspect its type or properties before following the relevant checks below.
If the VODs are in an OBS VLC Video playlist
Check the playlist and its playback controls
- In OBS, select the scene containing the VOD source and open that source’s properties.
- Confirm that every intended clip appears in the playlist and that the clips are in the desired order.
- Turn Shuffle Playlist off if you need the VODs to play in a particular sequence. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- Choose whether Loop Playlist should be on. OBS documents looping as on by default; looping repeats the playlist rather than adding clips that are absent from it.
- Apply the changes and watch the local preview through the end of one clip. Check whether the next listed item starts.
If the next item is not in the playlist, playback cannot advance to it. If the list is correct but the source stops when a scene changes, check its visibility behavior.

Check what happens when the source is hidden
OBS documents the VLC Video default as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” A scene transition that hides the source can therefore stop playback and restart it when it becomes visible again. In the VLC Video source properties, inspect Visibility Behaviour and choose the option that matches your scene setup. OBS also documents options to pause and resume playback, or to keep playing while invisible. The appropriate choice depends on whether the VOD should continue through scenes where its source is hidden.
Check VLC only if the source is unavailable
If VLC Video is missing or unavailable as a source, OBS says VLC must be installed for that source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This dependency does not establish that installing VLC will fix a source that is already present but fails to advance. For that symptom, check the playlist, visibility behavior, and preview first.

If the VODs are playing in YouTube’s player
Check Autoplay in the YouTube player actually being used. YouTube’s Autoplay help page explains that the setting can differ among devices. Enabling it on a phone does not establish that it is enabled for the computer or player being captured. Check the setting on that device and in that player, then observe whether the next video starts there before diagnosing OBS.
Use OBS’s preview to separate playback from delivery
- Watch the OBS preview when the current VOD ends. Note whether the next VOD appears there.
- If the preview does not advance, return to the source-specific checks above: playlist and visibility for VLC Video, or Autoplay for a YouTube player.
- If the preview advances but viewers do not see the next VOD, inspect the outgoing stream’s health and OBS’s connection indicators. This comparison helps separate a local source transition from a delivery issue; it is a troubleshooting clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
OBS’s Help Portal distinguishes dropped frames from source playback. It says that an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection to the streaming-service server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points toward connection or stream-delivery troubleshooting, rather than proving that the playlist failed to advance.

What to record if it still fails
For a useful support report, capture the conditions that distinguish the playback paths and failure modes. OBS directs users who need help to its support resources.
- OBS version and operating system.
- The exact source type and whether the playlist items are local clips, YouTube videos, or a mix.
- Whether the current VOD finishes, the next item is absent, or playback becomes black or frozen.
- Whether the source is hidden by a scene change, and its Visibility Behaviour setting if it is VLC Video.
- Whether the next item appears in OBS’s preview and whether viewers see it in the live output.
- Whether OBS shows increasing dropped frames or a yellow or red connection indicator.
A historical OBS report illustrates why version and symptom details matter: issue #3410, opened in 2020, described a particular mixed audio/video VLC playlist problem on Windows 10 with OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1. The report involved the video frame remaining while the next audio item played, with audio-monitoring irregularities. It concerns old versions and a different, specific case; it does not establish a current general defect or explain every gaming VOD sequence.
