The first place to look is how OBS is playing the videos. A Media Source can hide itself when its file ends because Show nothing when playback ends is enabled by default. With a separate source or scene for the next video, that can leave a black interval while the next source is not yet visible. If you use a VLC Video playlist instead, check its loop setting and contents. These are possible causes, not a confirmed diagnosis: the symptom alone does not reveal your source setup.

Find out which OBS source is playing the videos

In the affected scene, inspect the Sources list. Your clips may be loaded in one Media Source, a VLC Video playlist, or multiple sources and scenes. The right fix depends on which arrangement you have.

Video setup Check first What the evidence establishes
One Media Source file Show nothing when playback ends OBS documents that this option hides the source at the end of its file. It does not establish that this is your setup. OBS Media Sources documentation
VLC Video playlist Loop Playlist, the playlist contents, VLC installation, and visibility behavior OBS documents playlist options and the VLC dependency. OBS Media Sources documentation
Multiple sources or scenes Whether the next source is visible and ready, and whether it restarts on activation A community forum example discusses a black transition when a newly activated source is initially black; it does not prove the same cause for gaps between playlist items. OBS forum discussion
Possible delivery problem Whether the black interval appears in OBS preview or a local recording, and the dropped-frames counter OBS’s help guidance discusses dropped frames in connection and bitrate troubleshooting. OBS Help Portal

Check a single Media Source

  1. In the scene’s Sources list, select the Media Source playing the clip and open its properties.
  2. Inspect Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this option as enabled by default; when enabled, the source is hidden after its file finishes. OBS Media Sources documentation
  3. If you want the last frame to remain visible during a handoff, test the setting with a representative clip and make a local recording that includes the end of one clip and the beginning of the next. Changing the option changes the source’s end-of-file behavior, so verify the result before using it on a continuous broadcast.

Check a VLC Video playlist

  1. Open the VLC Video source’s properties and confirm that the expected clips are present and in the intended order.
  2. Check Loop Playlist. OBS documents this setting as enabled by default; confirm it is on if the playlist should repeat. OBS Media Sources documentation
  3. Confirm VLC is installed. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  4. Review the source’s visibility behavior. VLC Video can continue, pause, or stop when it is not visible. Choose the behavior that fits your scene arrangement, then test what happens when the source becomes visible again.

A historical OBS issue described unexpected behavior with mixed audio and video items in VLC playlists on OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1. That report is specific to those older versions and does not show that current VLC playlists generally fail. OBS Studio issue #3410

Check source and scene handoffs

If the gap happens when OBS changes scenes or activates a different source, confirm that the incoming source is visible and ready to display video. Test whether it is set to restart when activated. A forum discussion describes a black transition when a newly activated source is initially black, and suggests disabling restart-on-activation for that transition case. It is a community example, not a universal fix, and may not apply when a playlist item ends. OBS forum discussion

Tell a local source gap from a stream-delivery problem

  1. Check whether the black interval appears in OBS’s preview.
  2. Make a local recording of the same sequence and check whether the gap is present there too.
  3. Look at OBS’s dropped-frames counter. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection or bitrate issue, where frames are dropped to avoid buffering. That is a different diagnostic path from a source being hidden at the end of a file. OBS Help Portal

If the gap is in the preview or local recording, focus first on source playback, visibility, and handoffs. If the local picture is continuous but viewers see a problem, investigate delivery and connection conditions rather than assuming the video source is disappearing.

Test without risking the continuous broadcast

Before changing a live 24/7 stream, reproduce the handoff in a spare scene or recording. Use a short representative sequence that includes a clip ending and the next one starting. Confirm what appears at the transition, then make one change at a time and record again so you can tell which setting affected the result.
