A blank OBS preview does not automatically mean your saved full-screen recording is empty. An exclusive-fullscreen game can stop rendering when you Alt+Tab to OBS, so first make a short test recording or view OBS on a second monitor. If the file is genuinely blank, work through the capture mode, game-specific restrictions, hook conflicts, GPU assignment, graphics API, and Windows gaming-feature checks below.
1. Determine whether only the preview is blank
Exclusive-fullscreen games often render only while they have focus. When OBS becomes the foreground application, the game may stop drawing; OBS therefore has nothing to show in its preview even though Game Capture can record correctly while the game is active. OBS documents this behavior in its Game Capture Troubleshooting and Game Capture Source guides.
- Leave your Game Capture source configured.
- Start recording in OBS.
- Switch back to the game and play for 10–20 seconds.
- Stop recording, then open the file from File > Show Recordings.
If the game appears in the file, the capture is working; the preview was merely hidden while the game was unfocused. A second monitor lets you keep OBS visible without taking focus from the game. If both the preview during gameplay and the saved file are empty, continue with the diagnostic steps.
2. Confirm that Game Capture is the right source
Game Capture is a Windows-only source that directly captures DirectX or OpenGL games. OBS says it should generally be tried first for supported games. It is not the same as Display Capture, which records an entire monitor, or Window Capture, which targets a window.

Fullscreen mode
Add Sources > + > Game Capture, create a source, and set Mode to Capture any fullscreen application. OBS describes this mode as automatically capturing a fullscreen game once the application is running. It does not require you to choose a window in advance.
Specific-window mode
For one known game, set Mode to Capture specific window. Launch the game first, return to the Game Capture properties, and select it from the Window list. The game must be running before it can appear there. OBS’s Game Capture Setup Guide recommends one Game Capture source per scene when you specify individual games.
Foreground or hotkey mode
Some OBS versions expose a mode that captures the foreground window when a hotkey is pressed. This can help when you switch among games, but it still depends on the game permitting the capture hook. Test one mode at a time rather than stacking several Game Capture sources over the same game.
3. Use the workaround for games that reject Game Capture
A small number of games do not allow OBS’s Game Capture hook. That is a game restriction, not proof that OBS is generally broken. OBS specifically recommends a windowed or borderless-fullscreen mode plus Window Capture for Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike 2. Its guidance also gives Window Capture as an option for Roblox and some older titles.
- Open the game’s video settings.
- Change exclusive fullscreen to Borderless or Windowed.
- In OBS, add Sources > + > Window Capture.
- Select the game window and test a short recording.
Do not assume a workaround listed for one title applies to another. Check the game’s current support notes and OBS’s troubleshooting table before changing launch parameters or anti-cheat settings. Window Capture is a targeted workaround, not a universal replacement for Game Capture.
4. Compare the available capture methods
| Method | Best fit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Game Capture: fullscreen | A supported Windows game running in fullscreen | The game may stop rendering when you Alt+Tab, and some games block the hook. |
| Game Capture: specific window | One running game selected explicitly | The game must be open before it can be selected. |
| Window Capture | A game running windowed or borderless when Game Capture is incompatible | OBS presents it as a game-specific workaround, not a guarantee for every title. |
| Display Capture | A broad fallback when you need the whole monitor | It records everything visible on that display, including notifications and private windows. |
Choose the narrowest source that meets your goal. Display Capture can confirm that the game is rendering, but it may expose unrelated desktop activity and can add a different performance path.
5. Run OBS with the permissions the game requires
Some protected games capture correctly only when OBS has elevated permissions. OBS lists examples including Call of Duty, Valorant, and Genshin Impact. To test this condition, close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, then start the game and try a new recording. If this fixes the problem, use the elevated launch only when needed and keep the game and OBS restart order consistent.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Do not change unrelated security settings or disable anti-cheat protection. A game’s own support policy takes priority; some anti-cheat systems may block capture regardless of OBS permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Isolate overlays and hook conflicts
Game Capture and many overlays work by injecting or intercepting graphics calls. Two programs attempting to hook the same game can produce a black source, a frozen frame, a crash, or a recording with audio but no video. OBS identifies overlays, FPS counters, antivirus products, and other recording tools as possible conflicts. Its Known Application Conflicts article recommends closing competing software and disabling overlay or on-screen-display features.
Temporarily close likely conflicts
- Other game recorders or streaming tools.
- Discord, Steam, Xbox, NVIDIA, AMD, or similar in-game overlays.
- FPS counters and hardware-monitoring overlays.
- RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) and MSI Afterburner OSD features.
- Security software that injects into applications.
Exit the suspected program completely, restart OBS and the game, and test again. If capture returns, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict rather than leaving every overlay disabled indefinitely.
RTSS compatibility setting
OBS’s troubleshooting page says RTSS 7.3.2 or newer can be configured by opening RTSS Setup and selecting Use Microsoft Detours API hooking. Treat this as a version-specific option from OBS’s guide; the label may not exist in every RTSS build. Restart RTSS, OBS, and the game after changing it.
7. Check GPU assignments on laptops and all-in-one PCs
Systems with integrated and discrete GPUs can place OBS on one adapter and the game on another. That mismatch can prevent Game Capture from seeing the game or can cause a black source. OBS recommends making sure both applications use the high-performance GPU.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add OBS if it is not listed, then choose Options and select High performance.
- Add the game executable and select High performance for it as well.
- Apply the change, fully exit both programs, and restart them.
Vendor control panels can provide an additional per-application GPU preference. Apply one policy consistently rather than forcing OBS to a different adapter from the game. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting article discusses multi-adapter behavior as a performance concern; its multi-adapter compatibility option is generally unnecessary outside configurations such as SLI/CrossFire or some multi-GPU laptops, so it is not a standard fix for every blank capture.
8. Test the graphics API
Capture behavior can change between DirectX versions. OBS reports that some DX12 games can crash when OBS is running or show frame problems in capture. If the game supports it, switch from DX12 to DX11 in the game’s graphics settings or launch options, then restart the game and OBS and test again.

This is conditional: do not force DX11 when the title does not support it, and expect visual or performance differences after changing APIs. Record the original setting so you can revert it.
9. Review Windows gaming features in context
Windows Game DVR and Game Bar background recording can consume resources or compete for NVENC encoding sessions. Open Settings > Gaming > Captures and disable background recording only if you are not using it and suspect a conflict. You can also turn off Game Bar recording features for a controlled test.
OBS’s Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting article was published on 2021-08-26 and gives version-dependent Game Mode guidance: it recommends leaving Game Mode enabled on Windows 10 version 1809 or newer with current updates, while describing disabling it for older versions. Windows labels and behavior have changed, so confirm that advice against your installed Windows release rather than disabling Game Mode universally.
10. A clean diagnostic sequence
Use this order so each test changes one variable:
- Make a short recording and inspect the file before treating a blank preview as failure.
- Verify that the source is Game Capture and choose fullscreen or specific-window mode appropriate to the game.
- For a specific-window source, launch the game before selecting it.
- Try borderless/windowed plus Window Capture for games named in OBS’s guidance or titles known to reject hooks.
- Run OBS as administrator when the game requires it.
- Close overlays, FPS counters, RTSS/MSI Afterburner OSD, antivirus integrations, and other recorders; restart both applications.
- Align OBS and the game to the high-performance GPU, then restart.
- Try DX11 when a DX12 title supports it and capture is unstable.
- Review Game Bar background recording and apply Game Mode guidance that matches your Windows version.
If one step works, undo later changes and retest. A stable configuration is more useful than enabling every compatibility option at once.

Preview is black, but the recording is correct
Keep the game focused while recording, use a second monitor, or judge the saved file instead of the unfocused preview.
The game is missing from the Window list
Launch it first, confirm it is not minimized, then reopen Game Capture properties. If it remains absent, use fullscreen detection or Window Capture in borderless mode.

Capture works until an overlay appears
Disable that overlay or its OSD, restart the game and OBS, and then re-enable other overlays individually to find the incompatible one.
The game crashes when OBS starts
Try DX11 where supported, remove competing hooks, and check whether the title requires OBS to run as administrator. Do not bypass anti-cheat protections.
Only a laptop setup fails
Check Windows and vendor GPU assignments for both executables. Restart both applications after applying the high-performance setting.

12. What to include when asking for help
Provide the exact game title and version, Windows edition/build, GPU models, whether the system has integrated and discrete graphics, OBS version, Game Capture mode, fullscreen/borderless state, and whether the saved file is blank or only the preview. Also list overlays, RTSS/MSI Afterburner, antivirus integrations, the graphics API, and whether OBS was run as administrator. These details distinguish a focus-related preview from a blocked hook or adapter mismatch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Game Capture work on macOS or Linux?
No. OBS marks Game Capture as Windows-only; use the capture sources available for your operating system.
Should I buy a capture card for a PC game that OBS cannot hook?
Not for this problem. OBS documents capture devices for footage from external consoles, which is a different setup from capturing a game running on the same PC.
Will Display Capture always fix a black Game Capture source?
No. It may show the whole desktop when the game is rendering, but it changes the privacy and performance characteristics of the scene and is not a guaranteed fix for a game that blocks capture.
The Bottom Line
Start by proving whether the saved file is empty, then match the source mode to the game. Apply game-specific Window Capture guidance where needed, isolate hook conflicts, align GPU assignments, test a supported graphics API, and review Windows recording features for your version. There is no single fullscreen setting that fixes every title.
