Start with the account and device checks below before removing anything.
Check these basic requirements first
Before troubleshooting the installer, confirm that you are installing the desktop version on a supported computer:
- Microsoft 365 desktop apps are supported on Windows PCs and Macs. They are not supported for installation on Chromebooks; Chromebook users must use Office in a browser or the mobile apps.
- A one-time Office purchase can be platform-specific. A Windows license will not install on a Mac, and a Mac license will not install on Windows.
- The standard Windows installer installs Office on the system drive, normally C:. It does not support choosing another drive.
- Windows XP and Windows Vista cannot run Office 2016 or newer releases.
For a one-time purchase, open your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page and check the product and platform. For a Microsoft 365 subscription, check that the subscription is active and belongs to the account currently signed in.

- Open m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Select Sign in.
- Sign in with the account that owns Microsoft 365, or with the work or school account that was assigned the license.
- Select Install apps, then select Install.
For some work or school tenants, the controls appear as Apps in the left navigation pane, followed by Install apps and Microsoft 365 apps.
On Windows, respond to the browser download prompt as follows:

If Windows displays “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes. The installation has finished when the installer says “You’re all set! Office is installed now”; select Close.
Fix a missing, gray, or unavailable Install button
Personal Microsoft account
Sign out of Microsoft 365 in the browser, close the browser, reopen it, and sign in again with the account that purchased the subscription. A common cause is using a different personal account from the one shown on the Microsoft 365 order or subscription.
A gray Install button can indicate that the Microsoft 365 subscription has expired. Check the subscription status in Services & subscriptions and renew it if necessary.
Work or school account
A work or school user needs a Microsoft 365 Apps license assigned to the account. Having an email address in the organization’s Microsoft 365 tenant does not automatically mean that desktop apps are included.
First, sign out of Microsoft 365 and sign back in. Microsoft identifies this as the first action when the installation option is missing or the account reports that it has no license. If the option is still absent, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator.
An administrator can check the assignment at:
admin.microsoft.com → Settings → My app settings → Office 365

Remove conflicting Office versions
Existing Office software is one of the most frequent reasons a new installation stops. Microsoft 365 cannot combine 32-bit and 64-bit Office installations on the same computer. The same restriction applies to standalone apps such as Visio and Project.

Office also cannot install its Click-to-Run version alongside incompatible Windows Installer (MSI) products, including some installations of Office Professional Plus or Office Standard. The error may say:
“We’re sorry, Office Click-to-Run installer encountered a problem…”

Identify what is installed
- Press the Windows key and type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Look for Microsoft 365, Office, Project, Visio, or an Office Professional Plus/Standard product.
If you are switching from 32-bit to 64-bit, remove the existing Microsoft 365 or Office installation and any standalone Office application using the opposite architecture. Then return to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps, select Install apps, choose the language and the required 64-bit or 32-bit version, and select Install.
The current installer normally chooses 64-bit. If it detects an existing 32-bit Office installation or a 32-bit Project or Visio installation, it may choose 32-bit instead.
Completely uninstall Office before reinstalling
Uninstalling Office removes the applications, not the documents, workbooks, or other files created with them. Still, save and close open documents before proceeding.
Use Windows Control Panel
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office suite.
- Select Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when the removal is complete.
If Office was installed as a suite, remove the suite name, such as Microsoft 365 or Office Home and Student. Individual apps generally cannot be removed from a suite. A standalone app can be removed separately only when it was purchased or installed as a standalone product.
Use Microsoft’s current Get Help troubleshooter
Microsoft’s current uninstall troubleshooter is launched through Get Help, not the older Support and Recovery Assistant:
- Open Microsoft’s uninstall Office support page on the same Windows PC that contains Office.
- Select Uninstall.
- If Windows says “This site is trying to open Get Help,” select Open.
- Follow the prompts and restart when asked.
This troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later and must run on the affected PC. Microsoft currently states that it cannot uninstall Office 2024. Use Control Panel or the applicable Windows removal method for Office 2024 instead.
Remove a Microsoft Store installation
To identify a Microsoft Store version, open an Office app’s version information and look for Version, Build, and the words Microsoft Store. Try removing it through Windows Settings first. If that fails, open Windows PowerShell as administrator and run:

Get-AppxPackage -name “Microsoft.Office.Desktop” | Remove-AppxPackage
Restart Windows, then verify that the package is gone:
Get-AppxPackage -name “Microsoft.Office.Desktop”
If the command returns only a new prompt with no package information, the Microsoft Store installation has been removed.
Fix a download that is slow or stuck at 90%
A normal installation downloads files while setup is running. Slow or unreliable internet, a proxy, firewall, antivirus software, or another Office update can interrupt that process. Microsoft also notes that setup can appear stuck at 90% when another Office installation or update is running in the background.
Try these steps in order:
- Wait a few minutes if the disk or network is still active; repeatedly cancelling setup can leave another installer process running.
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and other Office apps.
- Restart Windows to clear a stalled Office update or installer process.
- Temporarily connect through a more reliable network and avoid a restricted corporate proxy if your organization’s policy permits it.
- Retry the installation from m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If security software is blocking the installer, ask the administrator to allow the Microsoft 365 installation process.
Use the offline installer for unreliable connections
The offline installer is useful when the regular download repeatedly fails, but it is not completely download-free. You still need an internet connection to download the installer image. After that image is downloaded, Office can be installed without staying online.
For a personal Microsoft 365 plan:
- On the Microsoft 365 installation page, select Download.
- In the Install window, open Choose a version.
- Select Offline installer.
- Choose the language and select Install.
- Download the .img file. For a personal plan, it is named O365HomePremRetail.img.
- Open the image file. Windows mounts it as a virtual drive; if the first drive letter is unavailable, Windows assigns the next available letter.
- Open the virtual drive’s Office folder.
- Run Setup32.exe or Setup64.exe.
After setup, open Word or Excel while connected to the internet, select Accept for the license terms, and allow activation to complete.

Install with the Office Deployment Tool
The Office Deployment Tool is mainly useful for managed computers, repeat deployments, or cases where you need to control the architecture. It does not bypass licensing: the user still needs an assigned Microsoft 365 Apps license for activation.
- Create C:\ODT.
- Download the Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft.
- Run the downloaded executable, accept the license terms, and choose C:\ODT in Browse for Folder.
- Create the required XML configuration file in C:\ODT.
- Open Command Prompt and run the download command, followed by the configuration command.
For Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, this is a 32-bit configuration saved as C:\ODT\installOfficeProPlus32.xml:

For 64-bit enterprise installation, use OfficeClientEdition=”64″, save the file as installOfficeProPlus64.xml, and run:
c:\odt\setup.exe /download installOfficeProPlus64.xml

Microsoft 365 Apps for business uses the product ID O365BusinessRetail. The documented 32-bit configuration filename is installOfficeBusRet32.xml, with these commands:
c:\odt\setup.exe /download installOfficeBusRet32.xml
c:\odt\setup.exe /configure installOfficeBusRet32.xml
en-us installs English. Replace it with the appropriate Microsoft language ID for another language. Microsoft 365 Apps for business and Microsoft 365 Business Standard use the business product configuration; other business plans use the enterprise configuration according to Microsoft’s offline-installer instructions.

Activate and update Office after installation
Installation and activation are separate. Open Word or Excel while connected to the internet, sign in with the licensed account if prompted, and select Accept for the license terms. If activation fails, check that you are not signed in with a different personal, work, or school account.
To manually check for updates:
Open Word or Excel → File → Account → Update Options → Update Now
Microsoft 365 Apps follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy and is currently listed as in support. For comparison, Office 2021 retires on October 14, 2026, while Office 2024 retires on October 10, 2029. Those dates do not fix an installation error, but they matter when deciding whether to reinstall an older perpetual Office release or move to Microsoft 365.
A practical order of attack
If you want the shortest route to a working installation, use this sequence:

- Confirm that the computer is a supported Windows PC or Mac and that the license matches the platform.
- Sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with the licensed account.
- Check that the subscription is active or ask the administrator to assign Microsoft 365 Apps.
- Restart Windows and close all Office apps.
- Remove conflicting 32-bit, 64-bit, MSI, Project, or Visio installations.
- Retry the standard installer.
- Use the offline installer if the download remains unreliable.
- Use the Office Deployment Tool only when you need a controlled or repeatable deployment.
These steps address the common causes without deleting personal documents. If setup still fails after a complete removal, record the exact error message, the Office version, whether it came from the Microsoft Store or Click-to-Run, and whether the account is personal or managed by an organization. Those details determine the next fix.
FAQ
Why is there no Install apps button in Microsoft 365?
The signed-in account may not own an active subscription or, for a work or school account, may not have a Microsoft 365 Apps license assigned. Sign out and sign back in first. An administrator can check the assignment at admin.microsoft.com → Settings → My app settings → Office 365.
Can I install 64-bit Office over 32-bit Office?
No. Uninstall the existing 32-bit Microsoft 365 or Office installation first, including conflicting 32-bit or 64-bit versions of standalone Project or Visio. Then return to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps, choose the required architecture, and install it.
Why does Office installation stop at 90%?
Microsoft lists slow connections, proxy or firewall restrictions, antivirus software, and another Office installation or update running in the background as possible causes. Restart Windows, close Office apps, retry on a reliable connection, or use the offline installer.
Can I install Microsoft 365 on a Chromebook?
The desktop Windows and Mac versions are not supported on Chromebooks. Use Office in a web browser or install the supported mobile Office apps instead.
Will uninstalling Office delete my documents?
No. Uninstalling Microsoft 365 removes the Office applications, not documents, workbooks, or other files created with them. Close and save your files before uninstalling.
Does the Office offline installer work without internet?
You need internet access to download the installer image. Once the image is downloaded, you can run the installation without remaining online, but you will need to connect later for activation.
The Bottom Line
