A missing title is not necessarily gone from the entire service—or from streaming altogether.
How streaming rights determine what stays in a catalog
A service may commission a program, acquire exclusive rights, license an existing title, or co-produce it. Those arrangements determine where and for how long it can show the work, and they do not always give the service worldwide ownership.

For licensed titles, the agreement defines the rights the service can use and the period for which it can use them. Rights connected to a program can include public performance rights for music in the content; terms and license periods vary. Netflix describes these arrangements in its 2025 annual filing.
Why a service may not renew a title
When a license approaches expiration, Netflix says it considers whether the rights are still available, how popular the title is in a region, and how its licensing cost compares with that popularity. If the service does not renew, its permission to stream the title ends. Netflix summarizes the basic reason this way: “some titles do leave Netflix because of licensing agreements.” See its help article on why titles leave.

Rights may be unavailable because another rights holder controls them or a competing service has an exclusive deal. A service may also decide that a title does not fit its renewal and programming priorities. Netflix’s filing says some licenses allow providers to withdraw content relatively quickly, but this is a general description of its agreements—not proof of why any specific show or film disappeared.
Unless the service or rights holder explains a particular removal, the exact reason for that title is not established. A plausible explanation, such as cost or low viewership, should not be treated as confirmed.

- It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn?t remember him?and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him?sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.
Why availability differs by country
Streaming rights can be divided by territory. A service might have permission to show a title in one country or region before rights become available elsewhere; Netflix gives Latin America, the United States, and Canada as an example. A title may also be unavailable in a region if nobody is currently selling the rights there or another platform has exclusivity. Netflix explains these cases in its country availability help article.
That is why a title can remain in one country’s catalog while disappearing from another, or never appear in your local catalog at all. Catalogs can also change as rights become available or agreements end.

What “Netflix Original” does—and does not—mean
“Netflix Original” is not a guarantee that Netflix created a program or owns its rights worldwide. The European Audiovisual Observatory explains that the label can apply to a licensed or co-produced title that Netflix has exclusive rights to show in a particular territory. The same title may be branded as an Original in one market but not another. See the Council of Europe’s report on copyright licensing in the EU.
How to tell a removal from a visibility problem
Not seeing a title does not by itself prove that it has left the service. Netflix lists several other possible causes, including release timing, regional rights, VPN-related catalog visibility, profile maturity settings, title blocking, and profile language. Its title-search help article covers these visibility issues.

- Check for a departure notice. Netflix says it gives notice when a title is about to leave; look for a “leaving soon” notice or information on the title page, where available.
- Confirm your country or region. Rights differ by territory, so a title’s availability elsewhere does not mean it is licensed where you are.
- Check the profile you are using. Review its maturity settings, blocked titles, and language, and consider whether VPN use could affect the catalog shown.
- Consider release timing. A title that has not yet arrived in your region is different from one that has departed.
If these checks do not explain the absence and there is a departure notice, the title has likely left that service’s catalog. That still does not establish where else it is currently available; check services in your own region for current listings.

Subscription access depends on the service continuing to offer the title and retain the necessary rights. A DVD or Blu-ray can be an alternative for a specific film or show if a physical edition exists. It may preserve access to that particular release, but editions vary and are not available for every title. Legal scholar Mark A. Lemley discusses the issue of access after streaming removal in “Disappearing Content”.
